Rupture Farms: Minecraft Adventure Map Version
UPDATE: 18/06/12
A year ago to the day, I started working on the first iteration of the project. It was being done on the OWF multiplayer server in survival mode with help from people, and later creative mode, first as fun building project, then as a filmset, then later with the idea of turning it into an adventure map. What I said about it can be found here, including a list of the people who helped me. This recreation of Abe's Oddysee's intro FMV was what came out of that. In May 2012, after much stalling and experimentation, I re-started the project offline using the MC Edit map editor and creative mode, with the purpose of creating a fully-fledged adventure map with its own texture pack. To play it, all you'll need is an up-to-date copy of Minecraft. Progress is ongoing although it's still in very early stages. Most of the work so far has been in the texture pack, planning player paths, and creating the groundwork for making the map function as a playable map. Of course I can't show any of that without revealing too much, but early WIP screenshots and media is shown below (textures/level design/mob skinning subject to change): http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...1&d=1339104483 http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...1&d=1339681999 http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...2&d=1340026214 http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...4&d=1340027851 Story: The map makes use of editable books to tell a heavily modified version of AO's story, spread throughout the map in small instalments. Here is a version of the first part: :
This map uses content made by the following people: (All other content & graphics made by me - This list subject to be added to later) Mojang - Developers of Minecraft and original Minecraft content featured in the map. Oddworld Inhabitants - Some textures derived from Abe's Oddysee, poster graphics. It's also based on their amazing and unique game, setting and universe. Blackgaze - Base slig skin. Phylum - Base glukkon skin Mudokon_Master - Base mudokon skin, skin improvements Carnix - "Mudokon Pops" graphic trace. Codewarrior/TKtech - Responsible for MC Edit Sethbling - Developer of the set biome filter for MC Edit Special thanks to the regulars of Oddworld Forums for their support & feedback! There's also a WIP thread here on the Minecraft forums! Show your support! Stay tuned to this topic for further updates. I have lots of free time, keep regular backups, have a plan which doesn't include anything too ambitious for me to complete, and I finish most of my projects. I intend to be one of the few people to actually finish an Oddworld fangame in one form or another, even though it may take me a while. |
I am a full supporter of this amazing project, I will carry on donating Smoothstone, I've got a lot of Cobble to smelt.
I was also wondering if could make the Glukkon part of the RF sign out of Glowstone? |
awesome :-)
|
I hate to be dismissive, but I'd rather you didn't, and this is why:
http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...1&d=1310593103 Took me about 5 minutes using INVedit on single player, placing this over my test image. I know I missed out the black border but I don't think that'd improve things much. Glowstone has such an ugly texture and doesn't tile properly - You'd also need at least 3 stacks of it too and that'll take you a year to farm. (plus it took me about an hour and a half to farm all that pink wool so I'd rather that wasn't removed) |
I'm not losing interest in Minecraft as such - it just runs too slowly on my computer. I want to get a new one this year, and if I do I'll start to play more. At the moment, though, it's painful.
The RuptureFarms project and its scale amazes me and you definitely need to keep going with it. I put in another few stacks of cobble I happened to have with me when I took a look yesterday, and if I do any more mining there will be more as well. |
Thanks for the compliments/continued donations, all. :) Soon I'll be drawing up a plan of the interior which may take a couple of days, maybe people can suggest improvements when I'm done.

Looks good! It's coming along isn't it.

Maybe after I draw up this plan I can make the construction of RF a little more interactive. |
*double-posts*
I has problem. RF is full of these: http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...1&d=1310656353 I try and make them in Minecraft. You cannot place half-blocks on the bottom of full blocks, nor can you make upside-down stairs. The result is quite pants: http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...1&d=1310656369 Anyone got any suggestions? I'm all out of ideas. |
I kind of feel that the barrels you have made three of in that picture look alright. This is where I always wished that Minecraft allowed half blocks to be placed on their side, or upside down.
I might try to come up with my own barrel design, but the scale might be off, it may also suck just as much. Still, I find this project absalutely awesome. |
We could not have barels. Alternately, one block of stone followed by 5 wood in a cross topped by one stone would work to an extent. We could even put a chest or something in the middle block and fill it with pork if you wanted to be picky.
I've donated several hundred cobble. Is that enough to be in the credits? |
Potential solution to the glowstone and barrel issues: Have you considered a custom texture pack?
I know there are dozens of more-than-capable spriters here that would be happy to construct a purpose-built rupture farms pack (if asked really nicely I might be one of them - its not like it's difficult). You may be against the idea because you might be after a vanilla minecraft feel. If so, I fully understand and appologise for the intrusion. Love this either way. To bits. Lost for words. Just bravo, keep it up, and all the best with future progress. ~Blessed be |
Thanks for the feedback, all. :)
@ Phylum: RF without barrels? That would be like a sandwich without a filler. Eh I'll just stick to the crappy 4x4 barrels I've made, they're better than none at all. I'm not so bothered about what's inside them - Who'll check? :P And yeah sorry about you not being on the credits, I didn't know. I'll change that now. @ Carnix - It's on the multiplayer server and we'd all prefer it to be kept un-modded, it's easier that way. Plus it's more of an achievement. |
:
I'm also not saying you should cheat with it like making cobblestone look like metal so you can use your undoubtable server-wide abundance of cobblestone as if it were iron blocks. I just thought you could use a texture pack to make things a little "nicer". For example you could have a prettier glowstone which tiles well or make chests look like barrels. But sure, sorry for sticking my nose in. Good luck all the same and still loving this project. ~Blessed be |
No it's fine suggestion, but I'll be sticking to the default texture pack - Then I can see what everyone else is seeing.
|
Do you plan to build mob grinder inside/below it?
|
Not sure yet.
Anyway I'm currently building the ground floor (might have to be changed with the slabs reclaimed if I build a basement) and frame of the roof... And this is what the view is like now of the inside: http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...1&d=1310748607 |
Very nice DH.
|
This is amazing! I'd help if I could, but I'd probably just fuck it up anyways. Keep up the good work!
|
Sorry for the intrusion but i felt i had to express how awesome this is, you're obviously pretty devoted to this huge project and the process of finishing it.
If it's alright (and if you need) i have a lot of cobblestone i don't need and would be glad to donate it, of course i'd smelt it to stone first if wanted. I would also like to help in any other way if needed but you might not trust me with construction or... anything, which I would totally understand. Anyways, it's your project and I just wanted to say I would love to help you finish but if you're alright with the help you already have it's cool, keep up the awesome work! |
Would you mind giving the expected dimensions?
|
Thanks for the continued feedback, people. :)
@Sligstorm - Stone is always welcome, but unfortunately OWF's multiplayer server is only open to established members of OWF. Thanks for the thought though. :) @STM - See http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...0&d=1308670172 and count the squares I guess, I've never counted the total squares myself (though I really should plan ahead a bit further). The frame was built in 6x6 inter-joining sections, so I just placed down the appropriate number of sections according to that plan. Hooray, I built Minecraft's largest stone cage - The roof may not stay as whole as this depending on what I end up planning for the upper floors: http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...1&d=1310836156 |
Thus far, very impressive.
|
I don't want to be annoying, nor do I want to spam the thread. I am aware this is not the correct thread for the question. But nobody is answering me on the official OWF Minecraft thread.
Could I possibly be whitelisted on my new accout, Sevensmith? It would be greatly appreciated. Also, just so this post is not 100% spam, the project is looking AWESOME! I could definitely lend some resources or help build, if you would like. Keep up the awesome work. |
Wow, that looks... daunting for one person. Should really hop back onto the old server to have a little first person view of this glorious feat of construction.
Question (which I hope hasn't been asked,) are you planning to do a yogcast style adventure within the confines of the building? |

Not sure yet though. |
This thing was a real bitch to film - Camera wouldn't behave itself, nor would the server load chunks fast enough.
At the end of this though is a montage of screenshots from over the past month - I started building RF exactly 1 month ago to the day. |
Bloody Amazing.
