Bees and Other Multi-Legged Vermin

On Nate's request, we now have a place to discuss the disgusting insects and arachnids of this world.

Spiders are weird and creepy as hell.

Bees sting the shit out of you.

Scorpions are fine as long as they're on top.

No mecha-insects allowed.

moxco 06-15-2011 04:48 AM

I was going to create a bee thread but I realised I had nothing to say. I think I've exhausted my capability to discuss bees.

STM 06-15-2011 05:13 AM

I agree, unless people are interested in hearing me rant about bees and how I know everything about them because my brain is godly...

Dixanadu 06-15-2011 05:23 AM

If it stops me from stumbling across bee-related jargon in other threads, by all means, pour your honey, sting filled mumblings here.

Oddey 06-15-2011 06:43 AM

Covered in bees.

I like bees. I hate wasps.

I like spiders as long as they are moving away from me.

I hate flies, locusts, mosquitos, and whatever else you can think of that flies and is not a bee, a plane or a duck.

Gwan-Thwei 06-15-2011 07:03 AM

I like bees. They're vicious little bastards though. Gotta be careful.
Spiders are cool.
Scorpions are cooler.

But I always hated things like roaches and bed-bugs. Parasites. Those Chagas Bugs. Mosquitoes. Shit like that.

Do you really think so? I've never been stung by a bee, and I used to sit outside (on the grass) where there was a whole bunch of them flying around the garden all the time. Bees seem quite benign to me.

Dipstikk 06-15-2011 07:43 AM

You know what's really cool? Dinosaurs. Dinosaurs are badass. I had a dream that I was being hunted by a t. rex. Scariest shit in the world- woke up at 2 AM from that shit and I couldn't get back to sleep. No lie.

Dinosaurs are awesome.

"It won't bother you if you leave it alone" is, in my experience, entirely true. I can never understand why people think otherwise.

Bullet Magnet 06-15-2011 07:52 AM

I love them all. I don't much like dead bugs, though. A great black fly buzzing around your room is annoying, but worse are all the dead ones that turn up on windowsills. Or somehow inside double glazing.

I can confirm this as the truth, it is not in the average worker bee mentality to go forth and sting a hapless victim. The species would be extinct in weeks if this were the case.

T-nex 06-15-2011 10:52 AM

I like dipping bees in honey and then eating them! WAHAHAHAH...

A few years back, my grandma used to keep bees.... She sold them and the wonderful land they were residing on :( I miss it.
Got to eat super-fresh honey directly from the extractor :D It was wonderful.

STM 06-15-2011 11:08 AM

There's not much nicer than fresh honey from the extractor...or even the hive. Consequently I may have some jars available for UK residents to purchase, cut comb honey, probably at around £10~ including P&P. More details will be available closer to the time of extraction if anyone is interested.

Dixanadu 06-15-2011 12:28 PM

There was a program on just now about Argentine Ants, how they've outgrown their natural habitat in (you guessed it) Argentina.

Predators in Argentina kept them in check, but since they have none nowhere else (except maybe Africa), they're pretty much destroying every ecosystem they go to. The weird thing was, pesticide actually makes them live fucking longer. It makes them lay more eggs!

Also, if members if a different colony meet each other, rather than rip each others heads off, they actually merge together forming a massive-super colony.

The Argentine Ant. A fucking cunt.

Also, they like to bite people's faces in their sleep for some reason.

Ugh.... when we moved in here a few months ago there were so many dead flies on the windowsills of my room, mostly march flies (horse flies) for some reason. And the rails of the sliding windows in the back kitchen were packed full of decomposing fly matter. There's still some stuck in there that we can't get out.

Jumping spiders don't bite; I've had plenty on me before.

Those huntsmen you have to watch out for:

http://australianmuseum.net.au/Uploa...eda%20vill.jpg

They get a lot bigger than that, though.

metroixer 06-15-2011 04:23 PM

I've had plenty of cases where a jumping spider would land on my hand and I would gently brush it off. Some were more stubborn than others and would lift their front legs to try to scare me or something, but I've never had one bite me. From what I've read from other forums they're supposed to be the more curious spiders so they would rather observe and experiment than be aggressive.

Manco 06-15-2011 04:54 PM

fuck you ench i had to scroll down to the quick reply form with my eyes closed

Can't stand huntsmen. metroixer's exotic shit I couldn't care less about, but fuck the brown lanky fuckers.

metroixer 06-15-2011 05:12 PM

Exotic? There's probably a jumper in your room right now!!

I was going to point out that your post was spam, but then it occurred to me that they certainly were multi-legged. And 'Vermin' is a matter of opinion.

Nate... Nate is scary. Nate is damn terrifying. Anyone else got a phobia of Nate?

MarsMudoken 06-15-2011 10:03 PM

I wouldn't call it phobia, as much as a great form of detestment, but fine, count me in. Still, he doesn't have legs, or at least I don't think. I always envisioned him as a giant green vortex, with lightning striking within, and tearing up lands beneath, emerald fires erupting at the core...

mr.odd 06-15-2011 10:21 PM

We get it! Nate gave you an infraction and you forever hate him.

What would that be called?

like Nateaphobia. or Arachnatephobia. or even Nateisamodsodontsaybadstuffabouthimorhelleatyou...phobia :D

moxco 06-15-2011 11:19 PM

Why all this Nate hate (it rhymes XD)? Everyone knows Max is the most scariest admin.

On topic; what trees are in your orchard STM? I've always wondered what plants beekeepers (though you dislike the word) use.
