What system is Oddworld best played on?

So for the first two games, what system do you guys feel is best to play the games on?

Personally, I always grew up with the games on the playstation, so I choose console. The PS1 controller is very comfortable and you don't, if ever need to look down at the controller, which takes away the gaming experience I'd say. But I do know there are quiet a few people here who play on pc. Right now (which happens rarely) I'm playing it on pc cause my mother and I are testing out this memory problem with the games.

For me it's very hard playing in on this system. It's very hard to run and jump especially. I'm playing Oddysee right now and there's this one part where you gotta sneak behind 2 sligs, then run and jump for the ledge. It's hard as hell lol. I run past them but I just can't react fast enough on the keyboards then the controller and it just bugs me.

Thoughts?

Are you only asking about the Abe games?

If yes, I'd say "Whichever system you first played them on". I've seen plenty of people arguing over the years about whether the PC or the PS controls are better, but I've never seen anyone say "I used to think the PS controls were good but now I've been converted to the PC!" (or vice versa).

As for Munch and Stranger, probably the Xbox, if only because they run more reliably. Even if you play on PC, I would strongly recommend playing with a controller.

Oh, and mod note: If this thread turns in to a mud-slinging match about which console is better than the others, infractions will be dealt out.

Mikaeel 06-04-2011 05:24 PM

Oh, sorry if I didn't point that out. It's the the first two games for PS1: Abes Oddysee and Abes Exoddus.

I'm not that familiar with Munch and Stranger :)

metroixer 06-04-2011 06:05 PM

I played Abe's Oddysee on Playstation and Exoddus on PC. Eventually, I phased into all PC controls. I know a lot of people have issues with them, but they feel really natural to me. On the flipside, the audio is much better on the Playstation versions. For example; the "secret area" jingle in Exoddus is a giant headache as is the mudokon saving jingle on the pc version.

Linux because it can't get viruses.

enchilado 06-04-2011 10:30 PM

Technically it can.

Phylum 06-04-2011 11:08 PM

I am aware.

It seems my humour has missed it's mark.

I had the PC versions for a long time, when I got the PS1 versions I was worried about how I'd adjust. Turns out the controls are fine, if not better. Xbox controls seem okay but Munch's Oddysee had weird things. (click in Right Stick to shoot/punch, etc)

Oddey 06-05-2011 12:27 AM

I never played the PS version. I once saw a friend of mine play it, and it looked complicated. PC version seemed a lot more straightforward. 9 gamespeak commands, on easily located number keys. Of course, I never really liked the Playstation controller anyway.

Mudokon_Master 06-05-2011 01:05 AM

For me, the PS1 controls were really comfortable and easy. Once you get used to PC controls it's not too bad either but it does take some getting used to.

Connell 06-05-2011 01:14 AM

Well I had my first Abe experiences on the good old PS1 but since joining this forum and discovering the great mods & and hacks section, i've been playing the PC version much more often! I'd say either now, but if you'd asked me back in the glory days it'd have been PS1 all the way.

Crashpunk 06-05-2011 01:48 AM

I've played and competed both abe games on PS and PC.

overall I like the PC's controls more.

RoryF 06-05-2011 02:10 AM

I played it on the PS originally, and I liked the controls apart from the run-jump buttons because the triangle button never really responded properly and it was a pain in those scrab secrets.
I found the PC one better because you can change the controls how you like and I gotten used to them.
Strangely I keep all my jump, run etc keys in a bunch.
Q: RUN
W: JUMP
E: ROLL(AE)
A: SNEAK
S: USE
O: THROW
X: CROUCH(AO)
All except O of course. :p

JennyGenesis 06-05-2011 02:18 AM

In terms of controls. I prefer the Playstation version. I find the controls more relaxing to work with and more responsive. I also like the slower frame rate on the PAL version of the Playstation games.

Mudokon_Master 06-05-2011 02:19 AM

@Oddman,
Those controls would be so wonky-donky for me. I would simply not be able to get used to it.

Well I've used WASD controls for most of the games I have for PC so I like the controls being up there.
Also the O key was just because I was thinking of the throw button for the playstation at the time, and these controls were originally for an emulator because my PS1 memory card didn't load anything.

I am kinda growing into games with a psx/ps2/ps3 controller in my hand. Although I don't like the L2/R2 triggers on the PS3 controller much!
I do not like other controllers I had ever had my hands on (Nintendo 64, Nintendo GC, Xbox 1st version (the bigger one)).
Can't say for other controllers. Never had one of the Xbox 360 in my hands, but also that one doesn't look comfortable to me if you are used to the PS version.

Keybords were never a good thing for me.

I don't know how I used to play GoldenEye with the N64 controller, I did like the GC controller, and the big Xbox Original controller didn't fit in my hands.
The PS3 controller's alright, I can't really use the analog sticks on the PS' though, they're in awkward places. The Xbox 360 one seems perfect for me. :p

I like the PS1 simply for playability and the audio, I wish they hadn't removed that 'there's a problem here' sound in AE though. I loved that.

What do you mean 'there's a problem here' sound?
Do you mean the 'I dunno' sound?

I always figured that was due to playing an old game on a modern OS, did it actually happen when playing on Win98 too?

In terms of controls, I think I prefer the PS1's controller layout to the PC's keyboard setup, but I can play just fine with both - neither of them feels harder to use or anything.

Oh that sound!
That's a cool sound, I don't think it's a 'there's a problem here' sound because at the paramonian temple, on the nest thing, when you jump in the well to go to the break bit with the meat sack, it plays there. I don't know what it's for.
Edit: You mean this sound right?

STM 06-05-2011 08:38 AM

Ja

Ja

Does anyone know what it's actually called though because it seems to pop up randomly.

metroixer 06-05-2011 09:15 AM

It's just a random sound that pops up to freak you out. All part of the atmosphere in Oddysee, that's why it didn't show up in Exoddus. While Exoddus is my favorite oddworld, it certainly isn't as unnerving as oddysee.

Possible, I think the oldest OS I've ever used was windows 2000, I'm not sure if that's what you mean by "modern" though.

I've only ever played the PC versions of AO/AE on Windows 7, so I assumed that the sound was bugged on there. If it's the same on Win2000, though, it's probably not the case.

It seems strange that OWI would change one sound effect for the PC release, though.

Well when I played it on my old Windows 98 SE PC a long tme ago, it had no difference from the PS sound (pitch). It might be a change of system architectue because the game was designed for Windows 9x which used MS-DOS, now it runs on Windows NT. Or maybe it's the sound cards designed to be used with older PCs or NT based ones.

Oh hey, never seen the screen at 00:15 before. What does the sneak preview look like?

STM 06-05-2011 11:06 AM

Wow, look I found something we've never seen before! This isn't my copy of the game so I can't comment but I expect it's an OW demo?
