Opinions on Quicksave

Just wanna get you guys thoughts on the quicksave option. Do you use it, not use, and should the HD version have it.

Me personally, I use it. It's very helpful in Exoddus. I feel they decided to include it in this game cause it's more of a spinoff to Oddysee cause Exoddus wasn't planned until a bit later. I'm pretty good at the games, doing speedthrough's and all but I always find myself using it anyway. I always use in that one level when your rolling under about 7-8 saws at one time. And every now and again before I deactivate a bomb. It makes me feel much more safe.

Now with Oddworld HD coming along I've heard people saying that it might have quicksave. I'm not sure they'd include it though. Exoddus has triple the amount of mudokons and puzzles. I don't think they'd make the game too easy, but that's my opinion.

Thoughts?

CrissCross 04-05-2011 01:31 PM

are you talking about quicksave on the new abes oddysee HD?

Mikaeel 04-05-2011 01:32 PM

^^ Both.

How do you feel about it as a whole in the old games and how do you feel about it being included in the HD remake.

CrissCross 04-05-2011 01:38 PM

It makes it a bit to easy but i would just leave it the same

both games

enchilado 04-05-2011 02:05 PM

Abe's Exoddus is just about the easiest video game I have ever played, solely because of Quiksave.

But goddamn, it's so fucking hard not to use it if it's there.

Mr. Bungle 04-05-2011 02:42 PM

Yeah. I can't get 100% on Oddysee due to the lack of Quiksave, and my lack of patience.

I don't think there should be Quiksave, just a lot more check-points.

Nate 04-05-2011 05:53 PM

I like quicksave because I prefer to be able to get through games rather than spend ages honing my skills. But I acknowledge that they're not a very good mechanic.

People wouldn't have complained so much about AO if the checkpoints had been more logically spaced. I'm thinking in particular of stretches in Scrabania where you had to backtrack multiple times to get spirit rings and blow up bombs; one mistake and you'd have to repeat the whole process again. That's not a challenge; that's just annoying.

enchilado 04-05-2011 05:56 PM

The checkpoints should be better placed, for sure. But being able to instantly save anywhere you like is ridiculous.

I'm sure "betterly" should be a word.

Mr. Bungle 04-05-2011 06:13 PM

Checkpoints after every tough challenge or accomplished goal would be good. Like gathering the spirit rings, pulling a tough-to-reach switch, or completing a trial.

Nate 04-05-2011 06:19 PM

Oh, and the whistling. Goddamn, I forgot the whistling.

Varrok 04-05-2011 09:10 PM

I personally don't use Quicksave and don't like it, but I understand there are some less skilled players who want it, so if they decided to use it, I'd accept if they put an option to use them or not just before you start new game (with no changes during)

Phylum 04-05-2011 09:52 PM

They could include difficulty levels in AOHD. That's the best thing for it in my view.

An easy mode with quicksaves would be a nice, non-threatening way for people to be introduced to the game. A normal mode with revised checkpoints would provide a challenge that was lacking from easy mode. They could also provide a classic mode with the original checkpoints.

Either that or they could have a limit on the number of quicksaves, but I detest that idea.

They could also provide a classic mode with the original checkpoints.

I want AbeHD to have different levels that follow the same story. Or at least different secret areas.

Anyway, if the levels are the same, I suppose a classic mode would be all right.

Phylum 04-05-2011 10:31 PM

It's a HD update, not an HD remake.

RoryF 04-05-2011 10:33 PM

I think they should leave AO with no quicksave. The checkpoints should be better, mainly because I don't want to get to a hard part save and come back later and find out I've gone back again. That really bugged me on the PC version. I could never use my PS1 memory card anyway, so I got to the Zulag 3 or something and then I had to turn it off and lose all my data.
It would be nice if there was a practice mode that had the first bit of RuptureFarms with quicksave, but that seems a bit of a tease to have it only on the easiest level.

I didn't think that much had been said about it. Also, you used both "a" and "an" in that sentence when they should have been the same.

Jordan 04-05-2011 11:07 PM

I use it because it's there, and tend to overuse it a lot. It makes Abe's Exoddus way easier than it should be. It's an alright feature, better than how saving works in Abe's Oddysee because checkpoints are placed in dodgy positions meaning you can lose quite a bit of something you've done and may have to start over. I think they should make checkpoints a little fairer and either do away with Quicksave or make a less broken alternative.

Abe HD? It is a remake. You can't just update the engine from 2D to 2.5D.

Manco 04-06-2011 02:03 AM

Bioshock had an achievement for completing the game without using a Vita-Chamber (basically a respawn point), and to help with that they added an option in the menu to disable them.

Just add a similar option to Abe's Oddysee HD. Adding Quicksaves won't hurt anyone, but the option will be there for people who want the old challenge.

I didn't think that much had been said about it.

Shit. I've jumped to a conclusion, haven't I.

Max, I struggled with wording that post. I wanted to say that it's an update of a game to a new engine while retaining the same stuff as opposed to a total remake.

Now Ench has made me realise that no such thing has been said.

Admiral Zaarin 04-06-2011 06:28 AM

In my opinion Abe's Oddysee would be too easy with quicksave. Shurely there're some frustrating places like the entrance to Scrabanian temple (with a troublesome secret area) but this is due to incorrect placement of checkpoints.

JennyGenesis 04-06-2011 06:38 AM

I think Gamespot's review of the Playstation version of Abe's Exoddus sums it up perfectly

"If you hated the first one, it's likely because of the lack of save points, so you should definitely consider giving this series another try."

Crashpunk 04-07-2011 01:11 AM

Quicksave and Quickload is in my opinion vital in Abe HD.
I lost count how many times i've raged quit Abe's Oddysee because I died and had to do a whole level again and it would make Abe's Oddyseeand even better game

and if you don't like to use Quicksave, then don't? still have the option in the game though.

Jordan 04-07-2011 02:59 AM

You can't really say don't use it if you don't want to. Even though I dislike over-using it I still do it because it's there and it seems like a habit to use it.

elums mum 04-07-2011 03:15 AM

Normal mode = quick-save.
Hard mode= no quick-save.

Then we have the option of playing the game both ways.

enchilado 04-07-2011 03:32 AM

Cinch = QuikSave
Easy = Plenty of well-placed checkpoints
Hard = Checkpoints at the start of each path
Hardcore = No saving at all

just_an_(ODD)alisque 04-07-2011 03:35 AM

I use it...and I use it very very often.
And I hope Abe's Oddysee HD will have it.I don't think it would be too easy.

Wil 04-07-2011 03:48 AM

You're forgetting the Terry Garrett difficulty level: No visuals.

Dynamithix 04-07-2011 03:50 AM

That would be brutal.

enchilado 04-07-2011 03:52 AM

No visuals and no saving.
