New Oddworld Reviews

Wow, it's been a while since we've been able to say that, hasn't it?

Since the Steam release of MO and SW they were reviewed in the March 2011 issue of PCGamer. Let's all express our opinions! I'm sure that'll end well.

Any other reviews can go in this thread, by all means.

I feel 77 is a bad score for SW. It deserves at least 80.

SligValet 03-08-2011 02:18 AM

Perfectly agree with the Munch review except for one point: It didn't keep the original Oddworld spirit very well :p

Dynamithix 03-08-2011 04:18 AM

I think the reviewer is right about Munch, but Stranger deserves a solid 85 in my opinion.

MeechMunchie 03-08-2011 04:39 AM

I think the reviewer did too, but it's always been their rule that they have to review a game in the state that it's released, even if it gets patched before the review is published. I'd say the bugs and lazy porting probably knocked about 10% off of that score.

Dynamithix 03-08-2011 05:47 AM

True.

I suddenly have an urge to play SW again, too bad i don't have it anymore:fuzsad:...

ziggy 03-09-2011 01:25 PM

I did like it a lot, although fighting Sekto definitely could have been better. And the voice acting was pretty meeehh. I have it, but my xbox only half works now. :(

Dynamithix 03-09-2011 01:41 PM

When I first played through SW with my dad I was always scared of Sekto's voice. So deep and spooky!

I thought the final fight was pretty freaking epic, but the two Gloktigi's were really hard in my opinion. We tried like 5 times and then we beat them. Sekto himself was pretty easy.

enchilado 03-09-2011 11:43 PM

Five times is hard? I don't call something hard unless it takes at least twice that many, and that's still without the 'really'.

Dynamithix 03-10-2011 01:28 AM

I just threw 5 there because I can't even remember the number, but I'm sure it was at least 5.

axLe 03-10-2011 03:59 AM

Good reviews, they seemed rather unbias which is a plus.

I totally agree with the Much review. It is rather tedious on PC x.x

Chlargia 03-10-2011 05:47 AM

i agree with sligvalet though, MO DEFINATELY didnt keep the oddworld spirit, which is also why i think AO and AE are the best games, (AO by far)

Dynamithix 03-10-2011 05:53 AM

In my opinion, Stranger's Wrath brought the Oddworld feeling back, but in a different style. It had humor moments too, but the story behind Stranger was pretty dark and the cutscenes were amazing.

EDIT: Also, I think the ending of SW was the best ending to an Oddworld game EVER.

I really really hope they make a Stranger's Wrath sequel.

Chlargia 03-10-2011 08:31 AM

nahh, i think AE had the best ending ever

Yup Stranger was a great comeback for OWI. I think it's my favorite oddworld game. I want a SW sequel too!

Or, you know, Fangus.

It kinda ended on a cliffhanger, about the Mudokons that were still out there.

Dynamithix 03-12-2011 08:49 AM

Yes, but SW had an even bigger cliffhanger which is exactly why it needs a sequel.

I want to know what happened with Sekto, goddamnit!

I've heard alot of people say that Munch's Oddysee on Steam is difficult with out a controller. I've completed the Xbox version plenty of times and have no plans to ever try the PC version. But seriously what is so hard about playing it on the keyboard?

MeechCrunchies 03-13-2011 07:38 PM

remember those precise jumps that you had to do in levels such as Dead River or Magog Motors? Take away the precision of an analog stick, and you have a recipe for immense frustration. :fuzmad:

Crashpunk 03-15-2011 01:20 AM

The game was made for a controller.

'nuff said

Nate 03-15-2011 03:54 AM

As I've said several times before, games made for controllers should only be played with controllers. Keyboards just don't work.

Dynamithix 03-15-2011 04:46 AM

What Nate said.

I found it really hard to play Munch with a keyboard, and because of that, I haven't really had any interest to play it.

MeechMunchie 03-15-2011 05:46 AM

Mice, on the other hand, often work better than the original controllers. Though that might just be me.

Wil 03-15-2011 07:06 AM

Depends whether you can control everything with one hand on the keyboard and the other hand on the mouse. In my experience, this is not the case with 3rd person platformers on PC.

MeechMunchie 03-15-2011 08:41 AM

Psychonauts was quite good for that.

Wil 03-15-2011 09:14 AM

Really? I found Psychonauts terrible for that. I was forever having to swap my hands all over the joint.

MeechMunchie 03-16-2011 12:39 AM

The power changing menu was rubbish, I'll give you that. Otherwise it was just swoosh mouse, click mouse, hammer button.

Yup, exactly why I purchased an xbox controller adaptator to play SW and MO on pc.

GABBITS OWN 03-16-2011 01:52 AM

In my opinion MO deserved above 70, because it was 3D, and a fun storyline.
