Fan Art Competition 2011

Welcome Ladies and Gentlemen to the first official Fan Corner competition of 2011! It's fan-art time; get your pens, pencils, crayons, inks, chalks, natural tribal dyes, collections of oddly shaped driftwood and art materials in general together and get your right-brains (get it right, Splat) switched to 'Odd'!

The theme for this, the second FC Oddworld Art Competition, is 'Moonlight'.

What you have to do:
  1. Draw/paint/whatever a piece of Oddworld Fan-art based around the competition theme, Moonlight.
  2. Upload your creation to an image-hosting website such as imageshack (because you can't put attachments in PMs), put the link in a PM and send it to me, Splat, before the deadline stated below.
  3. Sit back and wait for the results!

Anonymity is awesome!
The submissions will be marked by a selection of OWF members as chosen by myself, and to prevent any accidental bias we don't want the judges to know who [drew/painted/etcetera] what. To this end...
  • Do not upload your picture to Deviant Art, Oddworld Forums or anywhere else where it could easily be traced to you. You can put it on dA or wherever you want after the competition has been judged.
  • Don't post your picture on the forums or describe it or show it to anyone from the forums until after the results have been announced.
  • Don't use characters or events you have already described or shown on OWF, either in art or fiction.

Other Rules:
  • You must use official Oddworld species that have appeared in-game. So no unused creatures from the Art Book or fan-species. You may use creatures from any Oddworld game.
  • You must create your picture specifically for this competition; do not submit anything that you have posted on the internet before.
  • You must make some sort of use of the Moonlight theme, no matter how abstract.
  • You can use any medium for your picture (pencil, digital drawing, whatever), but you may not directly copy or trace any OWI art, or manipulate an existing picture (other than stock textures). It must be entirely your own work.

Finally, you will be judged on five categories and given marks out of ten on each:
  • Quality of Art: Specifically how good your art is, how much effort you put in and so on. This topic is pretty open depending on the art style you choose and it'll be up to each judge to decide how to rate your work, but generally time and effort show.
  • Depiction: How well you depict Oddworld's creatures and environments.
  • Oddness: How well does your picture capture the themes of the Oddworld series, and how well does it reflect Oddworld's atmosphere?
  • Originality: Come on, anyone can do a rendition of the scene from the end of AE with the mudokons holding their hands up to the moon. Really give some thought to how you can translate the theme, and do something that'll surprise (and impress) us!
  • Use of Theme: How clever, creative and successful is your use of the competition theme, Moonlight? (And how many excuses can I find to repeat that word in this post?)

The closing date for the competition is April the first. Your entries must be in before this date.

When the entries have been judged and the results collected, the pictures, the results and any comments the judges wanted to leave will be posted in a results thread in Fan Corner. The winner will have their name posted in the Fan Corner Hall of Awesome in the 'Useful Fan Corner Links' thread, and will win bragging rites until next year's competition.

So time is ticking! Get moving!

Good luck to everyone who joins. I can hardly wait to see the results for this one!

I won't be joining myself, due to my inability to draw anything remotely good, but that doesn't make me less interested in this.:D

STM 02-20-2011 12:39 AM

I might make a pass unless I really work on my biro art but good luck everyone else.

MeechMunchie 02-21-2011 04:27 AM

When I was reading that first post I thought for a couple of minutes and decided I wouldn't enter on the basis that I couldn't think of anything good that I could do with the theme. Then as I was typing this I thought of something quite nice, so I'll enter.

Doubt I'll be able to get out of my comfort zone, though. Pencil and ink is all I can really do.

that's exactly what happened to me.

AvengingGibbons 02-21-2011 11:23 AM

I might enter, depending on how many people show interest. The more competition there is the less likely it is that I'll be the worst :D.. I'm struggling with the theme title too.. 'moonlight'.. hmm...

Luskan 02-25-2011 02:33 PM

Y'know what? I was thinking the other day that i'd want to do a piece of Oddworld Art since i haven't done anything in ages and my idea actually involved moonlight.

Definitely going to do this since i've got some spare time! :)

OddYouko 03-12-2011 09:13 AM

Sweet!
I unfortunately don't have time for art right now.. But good luck to all who join! :)

Are Meeches considered "in game"? Since they are only on a poster, I'm not sure.

Practically, they have been used in the game, even if just in a poster. I'd say Meeches are OK to be featured in your entry if that's what you're aiming for.

enchilado 03-16-2011 01:22 AM

April the First? This isn't a hoax, is it?

Splat 03-16-2011 08:03 AM

Meeches are fine.
April the first is not a hoax, though these deadlines do seem distressingly flexible.

Gwan-Thwei 03-16-2011 09:35 AM

So...why can't I put i on dA and send it to you in a pm?

Ridg3 03-16-2011 11:35 AM

That's why, I remember you posting that on a thread and thought I'd point it out.

MeechMunchie 03-16-2011 01:16 PM

Put on dA after the competition's over.

Gwan-Thwei 03-17-2011 08:07 AM

Yeah, but why is dA not an acceptable image hosting site? I only want to get an image shack account if i have to.

MeechMunchie 03-17-2011 08:59 AM

ImageShack is fast, simple and better than Photobucket. You should have started using it ages ago. You don't even need an account - though any images you upload without one will disappear in a week or so.

Splat 03-17-2011 03:34 PM

You don't need an account with imageshack to post an image there.

I don't want judges knowing who drew what; last art competition one of the entrants was someone I was a particular friend of, and if I'd been judging I would have been biased towards that person, just 'cus they were my friend, and I particularly wanted them to win :p (that's why I didn't step in to judge even when only two of the people I'd asked to judge were able to do so).

Since all the judges are inevitably members of OWF (speaking of which, I need to get on with finding people for that) it could be they'll also have friends and... non-friends entering the competition, and if they knew who drew what, that might influence their decision. Which is why until after the competition I don't want people being able to see who drew what.

After the judging is over you can upload your picture wherever you like, but until then please keep it off of dA or anywhere it might be easily associated with you.

Sorry, and thanks.

STM 03-18-2011 11:14 AM

I can judge if you like I won't be entering this year.

Gwan-Thwei 03-18-2011 07:46 PM

I'll be uploading to imageshack then. Thanks for the explanation.

Splat 03-24-2011 06:54 PM

Less than a week left, and so far there are more or less no entries!

Also, my anti-virus is about to expire!

enchilado 03-24-2011 07:08 PM

I had something, but it didn't really use the theme. At all. And I didn't finish it.

And I don't even know if I can get on the internet again before April 1st. But I'll try.

ziggy 03-24-2011 09:18 PM

I only want to enter if I'll win.

MeechMunchie 03-25-2011 12:40 AM

No entrants? Looks like I'll have a chance then. Finishing it this weekend. Or, knowing me, not finishing it this weekend.

Splat 03-28-2011 02:16 PM

If you're working on an entry for this, can you say so? Since I still have none and the deadline's rapidly approaching, I will be willing to extend it if people are working on things.

MeechMunchie 03-28-2011 11:34 PM

Yes please. I genuinely have an excuse this time, what with exams and revision and whatnot.

enchilado 03-28-2011 11:52 PM

I'm... I'm trying to think of something...

slig# 5719 03-31-2011 01:01 PM

Sadly I haven't had the time to do any art so I won't be entering anything this time around.

I'll see ya'll next time.

scrabface 04-01-2011 11:17 AM

I am working on it. Is the contest still open?

CrissCross 04-01-2011 11:43 PM

ill work on one right now
