How unique is our situation?

I've always found it amazing that such a reasonably strong fanbase (considering) could be kept alive over 5 years, always in the hope of the return of the series of games they're a fan of. And now, would you believe, the games are coming back. Has this happened to any other game series? Reasonable success, then years of nothing, then a miraculous comeback? Is Oddworld unique in this respect?

Also, how has Lorne made his money for the past five years, with no new games?

I look forward to your wisdom

Manco 01-29-2011 12:48 PM

You should see the Sonic fanbase, they're still waiting for their miraculous comeback.

Elmatto753 01-29-2011 01:27 PM

Yes, but they've descended into whiny bastards. I can honestly think of no other series in this situation with a lasting fanbase.

Mudokon_Master 01-29-2011 01:35 PM

But we still have so much to discover particularly with the Oddbox now. We've now got all the models and textures from the 3d games there's no limit to what we can do. Now Lorne is going to make Abe in HD, that is going to be just another thing we can play around with. We have all achieved so much in the past 5 years and we shouldn't stop now.

Phylum 01-29-2011 02:11 PM

The Duke Nukem fanbase is still strong.

Paul_hibs3 01-29-2011 02:27 PM

Beyond good and evil has basically got the same treatment. Never played the game myself but the series has been given an HD Remake and a promised sequel in the mix because of the positive fan base for more.

Sonic colors is considered to be that comeback. The only reason it got "eh" magazine reviews was because it was sonic, but it's actually quite good considering how happy a lot of sonic fans are with it.

As for our situation, I dunno, there are fanbases like the elder scrolls series still waiting for another Morrowind and that's been going on for like 9 years now. There was the starcraft fanbase that has been abused up until Starcraft II came out recently, which is apparently just starcraft but prettier (word of mouth, not from experience)

Havoc 01-29-2011 04:53 PM

Simcity fanbase is still huge, with everyone silently hoping and praying for an official Simcity 5. Prolly never going to happen, especially with EA having the rights to the franchise.

LDG519 01-29-2011 06:24 PM

the halo fanbase is petty strong

metroixer 01-29-2011 06:53 PM

The point is fanbases that stay strong despite a long period of no games from the developers. Halo is... Not that

Okay my mistake, thanks for the clarity

You realise The Elder Scrolls IV came out years ago? Plus the next one has a teaser trailer out for the 5th?

Clannfear 01-30-2011 01:59 AM

Maybe he knows? I think that he talking bout next Elder Scrolls game in Morrowind region. Then, everything is clear in his post.

Xavier 01-30-2011 03:05 AM

I can't say I know much about fanbases of other games. But I have to agree we have something quite unique and special going on here. That's why I stayed all those years :D

Crashpunk 01-30-2011 04:21 AM

The Original Crash Bandicoot fanbase died when Crash of the Titans came out and the Rayman one was beginning to die when the rabbids took over as Ubisoft Mascot.

Oddworld's Fanbase is still here because we've been waiting for new games and Oddworld is such a unique series.

STM 01-30-2011 06:33 AM

There's a little known fan forum for Fallout (primarily the first two) named 'The Wastes' which stood the test of time, waiting for fallout 3 and New Vegas...funnily enough they survived from 2005 but are dying off now.

But there's erm, No Mutants Allowed which are still going although the traffic is slower than it is here.

Xavier 01-30-2011 12:57 PM

Well from what I've heard, plenty of those fallout fans were pretty disappointed by fallout 3. And that probably lead to a clash between of the new and old fans.

metroixer 01-30-2011 07:19 PM

No Mutants allowed is a literal warzone where no man woman and child would survive. Trying to state the fallout 2 is better than 1 will have you evaporated in seconds.

sure, this fanbase has gotten a little mean. but not THAT kind of mean.

Phylum 01-30-2011 08:27 PM

For one thing we don't give a shit what you think about Oddworld.

Sekto Springs 01-31-2011 03:17 AM

I'm just glad I'm viciously loyal to this franchise and not something like Kingdom Hearts.

Hulaabeo 01-31-2011 03:56 AM

Oddoworld is my whole life! It was an honour being born on the same year as Abes oddysee.

mojito 01-31-2011 09:51 AM

homeworld 3 is also strongly awaited

I only started playing Fallout when number 3 came out, did check out the backstory cinematics on Youtube for part 1 and 2 but I don't think I'd enjoy myself playing those because of the top down view playing style.

They put a lot of references (even entire characters) from the first two games in Fallout: New Vegas though. It's a little naive of the hardcore Fallout fans to expect every Fallout game to have the same old playing style, just as it would (have been) naive for us to think Oddworld would always have stayed 2D side scrollers.

enchilado 02-01-2011 03:26 PM

I think the Dink Network wins the prize.

Namida 02-04-2011 06:35 AM

Two words: Commander Keen.

STM 02-04-2011 07:51 AM

I agree Havoc, about Fallout and Oddworld but trust me, fallout one and two were so incredibly amazing that fallout 3 could not live up to it's standards, despite the new shiny 3D graphics, Fallout 1 had a story line so much better than F3 and even New Vegas really.

Clannfear 02-04-2011 08:21 AM

Fallout 1 and 2 were (and they are) superior games. I'll remember them forever.

STM 02-04-2011 09:15 AM

Agreed!

Mr.Spandexpants 02-16-2011 07:00 PM

I have to say oddworld was a pretty big thing while growing up. Teaching me rooling under saws is a bad idea and the like. Minecraft has a large fanbase aswell. Just sayin'

But Minecraft hasn't been around for 13 years.
