Patriotism

Patriotism is a style of life or a feeling I never really could understand. maybe it's because my parents are not from where I finally grew up. so I don't have any roots here. my mother's from Hungary and my father's from egypt.
now like I mentioned before, Austria's a pretty small country. so there is this complex which induces the people to make fun of the Germans and the Swiss. well everyone makes fun of the Swiss as they are boring autarkic people. there is also that patriotism going on, but I guess not in a much higher level than anywhere else.
I never considered myself in any kinda way patriotic and I hate the fact that we still jerk off on Christoph Waltz' media presence.
but I think patriotism is slowly fading away because of the new generation and the internet.
hm odd, before I started writing this, the topic sounded kinda interesting in my head, but now it seems I don't have anything to say.
do you feel in any way patriotic sometimes, even a slightest positive feeling about your origin?

Hazel-Rah 12-01-2010 08:28 PM

I am quite patriotic, I love America almost as much as the Japanese...

Bullet Magnet 12-01-2010 08:33 PM

Patriotism creeps me out. Especially as an Englishman, for many of whom patriotism is considered downright unpatriotic.

Hazel-Rah 12-01-2010 08:36 PM

You know what country is too much of a pussy to be patriotic? Germany. Did you know people in Germany regard their own modern flag as a symbol of fascism?

did you know you talk a lot of bullshit?

OddjobAbe 12-02-2010 12:28 AM

I hate patriotism. I have no reason to be proud of my country or to be proud for belonging to the country. I like this country (although not necessarily the way it is run), but I'm not proud of it. I don't see why I should be. I didn't build it, and I haven't made any massive contributions to it, nor did I make the decision to be born in it. I think it's all just been down to chance.

MeechMunchie 12-02-2010 12:39 AM

I'll defend the people of my country, but no, I don't feel I'm under any obligation to defend the country itself.

Strike Witch 12-02-2010 12:48 AM

Yeah. All governments have blood on their hands in some way or another. Human history is violence, bloodshed intermixed with rapid advancement and the realization of that bloodshed. I don't care for proud old traditions and national identity, I care for the people in the here and now who need to be stopped before they repeat the past's mistakes.

Manco 12-02-2010 02:49 AM

A lot of people where I live are very patriotic, I've had a few arguments with friends about how we're not really all that great.

Wings of Fire 12-02-2010 03:03 AM

Patriotic people can go shoot themselves up with undeserved self importance and then suck my dick some.

Wil 12-02-2010 04:37 AM

Patriotism is for people with nothing genuine to take pride in and a pathetic urge to be prideful in anything.

Nate 12-02-2010 05:59 AM

Patriotism is for people who grew up in a culture where patriotism was considered a virtue and lack of patriotism tantamount to treason.

Cold War USA, then?

Cold War USA, then?

right in clash of civilizations, huntington says that the questions of its identity was different during the cold war to today. "On which side am I standing?" changed to "Who am I?" In all the Action movies in the eighties, the Soviets were the villains. in the 90ies it was the arabs. I bet the North Korean are the next.

OANST 12-02-2010 08:02 AM

We've discussed this before. I'm as bored with the discussion as I am by patriotism.

STM 12-02-2010 08:13 AM

Patriotism? It all comes down to what you feel is patriotic doesn't it.

I'm rather anti-establishment in that I dislike the current government, I feel they regularly make decisions that do not help the average worker and I feel they bow down to every major country in the world.

However, I am proud of my history and am proud to be a part of the UK even if I usually keep that to myself, if England ever came under attack, I would be happy to fight for my country if it meant freedom for the generations to come.

Why? What makes you proud to live in Country X? It's the place where you live, a bit of land - that's all.

STM 12-02-2010 09:03 AM

I don't know, I'm proud of Britain because of it's leaps in science and peace and technology.

Wings of Fire 12-02-2010 09:37 AM

They stopped those injun tribes fighting by jingo!

OANST 12-02-2010 09:44 AM

Britian isn't so bad. As Strike Cunt mentioned, every nation has had it's share of brutality, and blood shed. Mainly because they all contain humans. And we suck dick.

MeechMunchie 12-02-2010 10:08 AM

Amen to that.

moxco 12-02-2010 10:43 PM

Thats one of the most sensitive and non-trollish things you've ever said. Well done.

Sekto Springs 12-03-2010 12:34 AM

Patriotism to me has a negative connotation. This is probably due mostly to American nationalists being insufferable, boisterous retards.

Why just Cold War-era?

Bullet Magnet 12-03-2010 04:26 AM

McCarthyism.

STM 12-03-2010 04:50 AM

I say boys, if it weren't for patriotism those blasted Zulu's would be far too savage to be part of the Empire!

Manco 12-03-2010 05:10 AM

You're a bit behind the times, there.
