Could Oddworld be the next big thing?
Perhaps this is a bit premature, but I'm just interested in your opinions here. Assuming everything goes well, and new games start to be made again, could the Oddworld franchise be as successful as, say, the Halo one, or the LittleBigPlanet one, to name just a couple of examples? Will it be popular once again?
All opinions appreciated, GlukkonGluk :D |
No.

I guess it really depends on how they make it. Like Uncharted 2 was awesome because it felt like i was playing in a movie! If OWI did that then they will be big in no time! Or they do something that no game did before! Lbp was one of the first successful play, create, share game on console because it appealed to old and the youth.

Oddworld is intelligent, meaningful and innovative. It will never be popular.

What was a misanthropic statement Max. But I'm a misanthropist so I agree.
|
really, it depends on what sort of game they produce. It would be interesting to see how they would manage to make popular such a bizarre deformed range of characters. I'm thinking along these lines: little big planet = cute compact characters. Halo = fit, humanoid characters. But Abe is quite abstract. Look at Avatar (if we're gonna compare body forms), they use beautiful attractive characters.. would it have been as popular if the creatures were less beautiful?.. Abe is a bit, ya know... Wouldnt ppl prefer to play as an attractive character? I dunno... these are just my thoughts. Would like to hear your views
When i look at the oddworld characters, i sense an inconsistency.. does anyone else get that? or even understand what i mean? |
They're supposed to be slightly Odd - not in a bad way, but certainly different from everything that's ever produced before. In my opinion, that's part of their appeal.

Popular and liked are different.. Much hype can be put on an upcoming game to make it popular even if it isn't liked as massively. Was Abe's Oddysee crazy popular, or crazy liked? And was it a one-hit-wonder gameplay model? Would that same model survive in 2011? Would the same characters back then have as much of a positive impact in a revised gameplay style? |
It damn well deserves to be popular.
And it will be if people can stop playing the same modern warfare ripoff shooter games, the gaming market is lacking in original ideas and oddworld has those original ideas. |
Thanks to Abe's Oddysee, Abe was considered one of Sony's unofficial mascots, next to Spyro the Dragon and Crash Bandicoot. That must say something about its popularity

The Oddworld games are unique and they deserve attention, but sadly, I don't think that many people would be interested in Oddworld anymore. Sure there are people who remember Abe and want more Oddworld (Like us!), but still, the majority of gamers now are just Call of Duty/Halo players and that's all they want.
*sigh* I just hope that one day people would realize that FPS isn't the only game genre in the world. |
I think if Oddworld took the approach RyuuFox mentioned and also added a small amount gameplay prominent in more mainstream platform games (such as Rayman, Spyro etc.) as well as keeping its puzzle elements then I think it could become big.
To be perfectly honest; I don't see why it isn't big already, but I think if they took a slightly more mainstream approach (and I do mean slight) then I think it would have potential for great things. :) |
If I remember correctly Munch's Oddysee was one of the most anticipated games for the PS2 back in the day. Those early visualizations and screenshots were really impressive for the time, and I think a lot of people were paying attention. Had it remained on that console and been given the proper resources and development time, they might have had a "console seller" on their hands.
I'm not saying it could have been as big as a Halo or Modern Warfare, but perhaps more akin to how BioShock generated massive buzz. I think this was their big moment to make or break, and unfortunately the game was dumbed down from it's ambitious ecosystem simulation or whatever to a standard adventure platformer. It will probably take a while for something as ambitious as Munch was on the PS2 to come along so I wouldn't hold your breath just yet. |
Yeah; I looked at the MO demos, I must say they looked better than the finished product.
I don't think the fact it didn't come up on the PS2 was an issue though; I think its the fact that they changed the final product so much compared to the demos that was the issue, if they kept it the same I think it would've been better. |

Anyways I reckon it could be if they make the new games right :) |
What's interesting about Oddworld is that the games are designed to be enjoyed by a relatively mature audience, though it certainly feels like the majority of people on this forum began playing the games when they were perhaps 7 or 8 years old, like I did.
The thing is, a child of that age has had far less exposure to culture and social 'normality' than someone who is in, say, their late teens. The child therefore will not be judgemental of a character/character's appearance- they won't look to compare that character against existing ones, or gameplay against other games. The child will likely have greater tolerance and acceptance of something out of the ordinary. They may see Oddworld, and see something different and interesting. Contrast that with an adult, who has been exposed to common trends and mainstream franchises their entire lives, and they will be less forgiving. A subjective and critical adult may dismiss Oddworld as being too strange, or too different to what they are used to, that they are reluctant to even give it a chance. To pose a question therefore, will Oddworld (upon it's first release to a new generation of consumers) immediately find success at the hands of it's intended target market? Or is it something that you need to 'grow up with' to really appreciate? As much as I wish it all the best, and certainly hope that it really takes off, I am inclined to agree with the latter- It may well take time for Oddworld to secure a loyal fanbase amongst the newer generation of gamers. |
Even if it's not going to be popular, there will always be people buying it and telling their friends the game is awesome!
At least I will... better, I'm already doing it :D |

lol; I see what you mean, but when I talk about Spryro I'm referring to earlier games in the series, they were quite good for its time.
|
Aha, good. I don't know what happened, but suddenly Spyro and Crash are all...different. I don't like it!
|
In my opinnion Oddworld doesn't work in 3D.
I believe that if OWI started to make 2D games (similar to AO/AE) for PSP, they could be a success. But not a big thing, as they are 3D games that rule the market. |
:
Yes, the 2D games were fantastic, but I think if enough time and energy were spent on a 3D Oddworld game it could be amazing. |

Oddworld back in the days if I remember was very popular but I think if a new Abe game comes out people will come back to it. To me its a cult game
|
It was too popular to have a cult following.
|
All religions are popular to a certain degree and they are all cults.
