Oddysee Beta sprites
I was looking through the Abes oddysee demo files, and converted them, here are some sprites never used in the game.
|
Cool, I've actually never seen mudokons'/Scrabs models without texture :D Also, it's bad that drummer mud didn't make it to final version :P
|
Its called ABEEND so it might have done something to do with the ending of the game, or level.
|
Any idea what those things actually are?
|
i have no idea :(
|
1) dancing Scrab to sit atop a pillar in some kind of in-game ending cutscene
2) giant bells (the first is at the top of the screen) 3) a ball of some kind 4) blue crystals hanging from a rope 5) a drumming Mudokon from same "cutscene" as the Scrab 6) a spinning security camera/motion sensor device - what does DOA mean? 7) the bottom of the security device (and I did realise this before I saw the name was DOABTM) |
Maybe the sprite's called ABEEND because it's like the whistling muds and ABE has to follow the drum beat and if he messes up, his life is at an END because the native drummer guy throws his drum stick at him.

Very nice! Good work!
The ball is from the Paramonian Temple if the F2 part of its filename is anything to go by. It reminds me of something from the art book, page 70. The crystal might have something to do with the crystal seen on page 80, although they look superficially different. |
I can't find any crystals on page 80...
On page 82, though, I see a strange vulture-esque creature that I'm very glad didn't make it into the game. |
Abe's Oddysee is around 14 years old. and we've just seen brand new beta sprites in 2010.
seriouly finding new suff in older games is amazing. thanks ever so much mlg man Hey Max? are these going into TOGG? |
That's a question for Xav.
Max may document them somewhere, but I doubt that they'll be TOGG'd. |
Thanks for sharing them!
|
I'm positive that there's a place for sprites/sprite sheets on TOGG. However, there are questions about how to host them that need to be answered, plus the time requirements of actually doing the hard work, which make it difficult for it to be done at the snap of a finger.

I believe that ball looks like a smaller version of the swaying nests for the original Scrabanian Desert "Arachnid Sr's"

Then I saw the possible explaination here for Death Of Abe. That gives me even more signs this is Abe hanging on a rope. |
Then what does the CRY in its name mean?
|
Crystal!
This post has been subtly edited to make me look like slightly less of a chump. |
while looking through i also found this. It seems to be the PS1 control buttons on angles, as if there once was a different 3d UI for the main menu.
|
Interesting. It makes me wonder why they don't delete all these .BAN's from the file when they don't use them.
|
mabe they didnt have time to do it... like the release date
|
I've seen most of these (since they're converted using my tool :P). Some of them are just 3D renderings that are flat shaded which looks very strange. If you look at the game speak in PS1 demo you'll see where that PS1 buttons sprite is used ;)

the bloody 'el is that?
O.o |
Reading the whole thread, and not just the last post, is probably a good idea. (!)

Not being a smartass is also a good idea... I was just wondering what the hell that random blue thing is, because nobody's figured it out yet. :| |
I made a simple GIF of the un-textured Scrab sprite. It appears its dancing
|
The gif is very cool!
|
It seems like the animation when one of the scrabs gets abe
|
crashpunk, did I or did I not already say that the scrab was dancing?
