Anime, Manga, Visual Novels, ect.

Hey, let's talk about all that stuff, yo.

Those that are into it, which ones do you like? Favorites? Why are they your favorites? What are you watching/reading now? ect.

Ridg3 07-22-2010 12:01 PM

Why I think this is a bad idea.

crimsonxking 07-22-2010 12:04 PM

I asked first, and isn't it better to have a topic for it than have those who do like it bring it up everywhere, which apparently people really hate?

If this goes south, I'll apologize and not do it again. But I know I'm going to want to talk with Wings of Fire about our common liking of visual novels. Plus the others here who like anime and whatnot.

Emesdee 07-22-2010 12:06 PM

Hey, maybe this thread will be different, since the first post isn't actually baiting or anything.

To keep this on topic. Is Fate/Stay Night really all that good? I found it boring, but heard it gets better with Unlimited Blade Works?

Wings of Fire 07-22-2010 12:10 PM

Right now I am watching and reading Clannad simultaneously whilst I've also got Strike Witches on my to watch list. Nothing really doing with this seasons anime, but Seitokai Yakuindomo is fun and I'm enjoying Highschool of the Dead. Other than that I've been collecting Ookami-san episodes to marathon at a later date.

VN wise I finished Umineko Episode Six: Dawn of the Golden Witch a week or so ago, and I'm currently playing through the Heaven's Feel route of Fate/Stay Night then moving on to the finale of Higurashi and then I have like Swan Song and Tsukihime to find time for.

I don't really like manga all that much, but a friend is forcing me to read Hayate the Combat Butler and I'm enjoying it.

That was self parody man! It was going really well after that too.

12chan misses you.

Sekto Springs 07-22-2010 12:12 PM

I just watched the hentai Dark Love. Does that count?

crimsonxking 07-22-2010 12:13 PM

Oh man, Wings of Fire, you haven't finished Heaven's Feel yet? Drop whatever else you are doing and finish that right now. Everything Fate/stay night comes full circle in that route. It's where the bulk of the story is and it gets really intense once it picks up.

I'm not currently watching any anime right now. Nothing really interests me right now, but I haven't really given much this season a chance. But most of it looks pretty bad.

I'm still in the middle of Umineko 6.

Nah, I actually don't chan. Well, except for the Type Moon board but that hardly counts.

Wings of Fire 07-22-2010 12:16 PM

I'm currently on like day 11 or something. Saber Alter just appeared, and Archer just got spiked by that shadow that's probably the Holy Grail.

In my opinion Umineko 6 was way way better than 5, but my favourite is still 3 because Evatrice.

Oh, keep reading. It gets really really good. Pretty depressing at times, too. It's definitely the darkest of the three routes.

My opinion on Umineko episodes. 4 > 3 > 6 (probably, we'll see) > 2 > 5 > 1

Havoc 07-22-2010 12:35 PM

You did not just open an anime thread.

Holy shit... holy shit... HOLY SHIT I'm outa here.

Why? Surprisingly, it wasn't focused on you.

Sadly I haven't watched a lot of Anime nor finished reading any Manga/visual novel series. However some have clawed their way into my notice:

Anime
The only ones I've seen from start to finish are:

Digimon (Season 1+2+3), watched a bit of 4+5 but they weren't as good in my opinion (the Japanese version of 5 had some promise though)
Deathnote

Yep that's it, the others I've seen bits of are:

Pokemon, oviously everyone knows what this is :p I never really got into the Anime though, the first movie was ok.
Monster, saw the first five episodes in Japanese and loved it (I saw them on YouTube I believe)
Mushishi, same as Monster
Sailor Moon, too young to remember any of it now though (except that opening theme pops in my head sometimes)

Manga/Visual novels
I've read some of:

Deathnote
Digimon Next
Darren Shan

And that's it from me on this rather nipongo themed post sayonara

It surpassed UBW for me with the Ilya scene just before the choice to remain a superhero or save Sakura.

That's pretty much mine too. 5 was good and the 'Lets throw shit at Natsuhi until she cries' was well used buuuuut not enough about the mystery.

In comparison, Zepar and Furfur are the best things to have happened to Chiru yet.

crimsonxking 07-22-2010 12:46 PM

Come on, guys. Let us have this topic. If we concentrate all this stuff into one thread, it should reduce it in other places. Isn't that what pisses you off? People derailing other threads to talk about it? I was just trying to help the problem. That's why I asked if it would be a bad idea or not first.

Anyway, WoF, you mentioned you liked KEY before. What have you read/seen?

100% Kanon, seen the 2006 anime and read the manga with good art. Waiting on Doki to release AIR episodes in Blu Ray quality and I have the whole of Clannad downloaded and am watching it slowly as I play through the vn.

I also have Little Busters downloaded and am waiting for the patch, also I watched Angel Beats last season, and whilst it wasn't that good I did love the second half of the series.

Yes. I really really like traps.

Nice. I've 100% Kanon and Clannad visual novel, as well as Planetarian. Seen both Kanons, both seasons of Clannad, Air, and Angel Beats. I also read the visual novel One, which isn't KEY but several staff members (including the main writer) went on to form KEY.

Wings of Fire 07-22-2010 01:04 PM

Oh duh yeah. I have Planatarian too.

The characters of Clannad don't seem as umm 'archetypal' maybe? as the characters of Kanon but they're growing on me. Especially Ryou.

Oh you funky little bisexual you

crimsonxking 07-22-2010 01:07 PM

I like Kanon more because it had more of an emotional impact on me. But I think Clannad is overall better. Especially the visual novels. Clannad was much better produced, I think.

It kinda annoyed me in Kanon how you were forced to do like half of everyone's route before you got to pick which one you did, so you read a lot of the same stuff. I know that's what skipping previously read text is for, but still.

Wings of Fire 07-22-2010 01:18 PM

Yes, and the fact that you had to go through fucking annoying Makoto on everyone elses route.

Fucking Makoto. It was possible to completely miss Shiori and Mai but you always had to deal with her.

Yeah. Her antics were cute the first time.

Not so much the 5th time.

Wings of Fire 07-22-2010 01:51 PM

JUST THROW THE FIREWORKS IN THE BITCH'S FACE ALREADY

crimsonxking 07-22-2010 01:53 PM

On the other side of things, it was too easy to get a Dead End in Clannad. You had to make the exact right choices to get put on a route and if you messed up early on you wound up getting an ending where you play some weird tag-like sport and are all alone. I got that ending like four times.

Wings of Fire 07-22-2010 01:56 PM

Luckily I don't really care for the 'difficulty' of vns and have been using a guide for all of them.

Luckily I don't really care for the 'difficulty' of vns and have been using a guide for all of them.

Most visual novels aren't nearly hard enough to require a guide, imo. The only one I needed one for was Tsukihime. Because you can mess up in Tsukihime and still play for like 2-3 hours before your mistake catches up to you and you get a bad end. I'd rather not do Trial and Error with that one.

Wings of Fire 07-22-2010 02:19 PM

Oh yeah, I have a flowchart for Tsukihime.

hah

hahahahahahahahaha

crimsonxking 07-22-2010 02:21 PM

Oh, make sure you use one for Kagetsu Tohya if you ever do that one too. You can miss stuff forever in that one since it doesn't play like a normal VN with routes and whatnot.

Wings of Fire 07-22-2010 02:41 PM

Like Clannad?

:

Attention:
Enter Sakagami Tomoyo's route after Sagare Misae 's

Tips:
Ichinose Kotomi's route is completely independent from other routes, and can be done any time you like.
Ibuki Fuko's route is independent from other routes as well, but should be completed earlier.
Miyazawa Yukine's and Mei Sunohara's routes can be played parallel. On the 20th of April, save on the first choice.
If you choose to “help”, then enter Mei Sunohara route
If not enter Miyazawa Yukine route.

Like Clannad?

No, it's different from pretty much any other VN. You play the same day over and over again that has tons of options of what to do and depending on what you do and what order you do it in new options open up as you slowly figure out the story of "what the hell is going on, anyway?"

It's pretty good, though. But if you move the game forward before seeing some things, you miss the chance to ever see them since the game saves over the "a day" data every time you finish it.
