How did the mudokon paw image come to be on the moon?

Just wondering.. what're your theories?! :)

Ridg3 07-12-2010 09:13 AM

My theory is that there's a thread for this type of question, beyond that I don't know and would also like to know why...

Josh 07-12-2010 09:13 AM

Magic.

No really, freaky voodoo shit.

Wil 07-12-2010 09:41 AM

At the end of the Quintology, Abe travels back in time to dynamite the paw into the moon so that the story can start in the first place. It's a stable time loop. Except, in doing so he dies. A tragic end to the series.

GlukkonGluk 07-12-2010 09:51 AM

Wow, Max, is that just an educated guess, or do you have some evidence there? Sounds like an Odd explanation to me...

ODDWORLDisTHEbest! 07-12-2010 10:03 AM

yeah does that really happen?

Wil 07-12-2010 10:07 AM

Yes of course it does.

These made me laugh.

OANST 07-12-2010 10:35 AM

I'm surprised that you guys hadn't heard that before. Once Oddworld decided that it wasn't going to make games anymore, Lorne did a big question and answer session. This is one of the things that he discussed.

Josh 07-12-2010 10:55 AM

The story is that Abe has to find a way to let himself know that he is the chosen one. If he hadn't seen the moon, maybe AO would not have happend.

Sekto Springs 07-12-2010 11:27 AM

Lorne's original explanation was that it occurred while Abe was escaping from RuptureFarms. After deciding that was a bit too deus ex machina for his taste, he decided to build the origins of the age-old Mudokon/Glukkon feud around it.

Also, are the mods generating any ideas on how to cut down on noobish ignorance? Having an FAQ doesn't work, having a Q&A doesn't work. I think we should move to re-examine my mandatory aptitude test idea.

Wil 07-12-2010 12:18 PM

Why bother? Noobish ignorance is the only reason to use OD at all.

Sekto Springs 07-12-2010 12:19 PM

True...
Then I move we go out for coffee and pie.

GlukkonGluk 07-12-2010 12:38 PM

It's hearing things like this that make me think- the Oddworld series is different, creative, fun, etc, etc...surely OWI could get their funding from SOMEWHERE, with all the brilliant ideas they've had? Surely someone with the money or whatever could really turn things around for OWI, if they pitched the ideas to the right people? Surely?

Nath 07-12-2010 01:11 PM

He should go on Dragons Den

Yes, but you guys won't let us troll them in here. It sort of ruins it.

Wil 07-12-2010 02:01 PM

Troll all you want. I'll just infract you for it. Along with helping noobs, it's just another form of Feeling Useful.

Xavier 07-13-2010 01:26 AM

It's been a while since I saw such an elaborate and semi believable load of rubbish like this once.

But I have to admit it made me laugh.

Wil 07-13-2010 02:00 AM

Yeah, Sekto Springs is good at that kind of stuff.

That's what I'm talking about! I want everywhere to be a free zone, like Welcomes and Birthdays is. I want to be the horrible person that I am with no fear of reprisal. Is that so much to ask?

Xavier 07-13-2010 08:36 AM

Yep, keep your filth out of OD. This discussion is now closed, everybody back on topic.

GlukkonGluk 07-13-2010 12:05 PM

I still stand by my point- with the brilliant ideas of OWI, if they could find someone with the interest and the money, then they'd be right back on track. I mean, look at us- they haven't done squat in, what, five, six years? And they STILL have a large fanbase. Surely that says something, eh? Eh? Eh?

OANST 07-13-2010 01:27 PM

All fifteen of us!

That sure is one big 'if'.

I mean, what do you think they've been doing the last six years other than trying to get someone to give them the money to do stuff?

Sekto Springs 07-13-2010 04:09 PM

Not to mention, despite having a dedicated fanbase, OWI also has a very small one.
This is it. Right here. Roughly 200 active fans, another 200 passive fans, and the rest is comprised of pre-teens that picked up the games once, joined the roster out of fleeting interest, and then moved on.

I think there's simply too few of us for an investor to look around and say "Hm, well at least there's a marketable fanbase", which is all they really care about in the end.

Xavier 07-13-2010 09:31 PM

I don't think this forum can give a clear image of how big the fanbase is, you can't expect everyone who has purchased one of the game to be registered here. There are plenty of fans out there who don't feel the need to express their love for the games via this (or any other forum).

Something that would probably be more relevant are the sales numbers of AO and AE via digital distribution.

How did the mudokon paw image come to be on the moon?

The same way bootmakers shaped Italy. In other words: I think it's just a coincidence, that ended up making the Mudokons think they're a "chosen people".

RadicalEdward2 07-15-2010 07:56 AM

My theory

Over time, as the "Mudokon Moon" rotated while orbiting Oddworld, the Mudokons did not yet know that the hand print existed. The print might just be a coincident mountain formation on the moon or a work of the Mudokon gods. As the moon continued to rotate the hand print was revealed which made the Mudokons believe that they were the "Chosen Race". Also since the pace of astronomic orbit(and all the fancy science junk) is probably different from that of our universe, the print probably took a decently long amount of time to appear so the Mudokons did not notice it for a while.

Trivia: since the handprint made the Mudokons assume they were the "Chosen Race", it made the Glukkons stop being friends with the Mudokons. Which is why the Glukkons are such jerks to the Mudokons :3

GlukkonGluk 07-15-2010 09:31 AM

I've just watched "Abe's Exoddus- The Movie", you know, the compilation of cutscenes from AE that OWI made and was nominated for a grammy. It was actually really good, but the interesting thing was, it used the bad ending where Abe gets executed, which supports Max's theory that OWI would like the quintology to have a tragic ending for Abe.

Wil 07-15-2010 09:44 AM

Grammy? You mean Oscar. Grammies are for music.

And as for 'theory', I'm insulted.
