Rupture Farms, fourth most evil corporation ever.

April's issue of Gameinformer made a list of the ten most evil corporations in video game history, the list is as follows...

1. Shinra Electric Company (FFVII)
2. Umbrella Corporation (RE)
3. Aperture Science (Portal)

4. Rupture Farms (Abe's Oddysee) - "The meat-processing plant is the biggest on Oddworld. They specialize in turing the local fauna into delicious treats like ScrabCakes and Paramite Pies. Not even dwindling species can stop this capitalistic machine, as slaver Molluck the Glukkon soon realizes the full and delicious potential of his indentured staff. We've heard of capitalistic cannibalism, but Rupture Farms turning its own Mudokon workers into popsicles takes the idea to a literal level."

5. Abstergo Industries (Assassin's Creed)
6. Ultor Corporation (Red Faction/Saints Row 2)
7. Union Aerospace Corporation (DOOM)
8. The Agency (Crackdown)
9. Fontaines Futuristics (BioShock)
10. Armacham Technology Corporation (F.E.A.R.)

Was Aperture really an evil organisation? It seemed to just have an insane AI programme...

Wil 06-15-2010 01:12 PM

And an insane founder, and a thirst for government funding that drove them to dangerous experimentation. But yes, I'm not sure they were evil per se, unless you consider GLaDOS the de facto ruler of the company. And again, her biggest goal seems to be the testing of a portal gun. Maybe her intentions for it turn out to be evil, but I doubt GI has knowledge of that.

And apart from the Umbrella Corporation, I have no idea what any of the others really are.

I would add U-Genix and UltraNet from TimeSplitters: Future Perfect, since their aim is to eradicate humanity and replace it with mutant warriors.

Really you've never played FFVII? Ah man, Shinra was ruthless, they harvested the life stream that sustained the planet for profit and forced the impoverished to live underground.

I only know 2-4-5-9

But great that Oddworld is mentioned again, although it is sooo long ago (luckily I am just in the middle of replaying AO from PSN :D)

Hazel-Rah 06-15-2010 01:26 PM

:) yep #9 is one of my favs and I'm replaying AO too for the first time in a year

They should've just put the Magog Cartel up at #4 but hey it's GI.

Ye, Rupture Farms is pretty extreme. It's real nice seeing it on a list with all the more well known corporations.

6. Ultor Corporation (Red Faction/Saints Row 2)

The same company featured in 2 completely unrelated games?

I only know ShinRa and RuptureFarms. I agree with them being on the list, since they were very evil companies indeed. There wasn't much evil about Sekto Springs, just what Sekto did to Stranger, and Vykkers Labs was just cruelty with a purpose, not true evil. I would also put UNATCO from Deus Ex, since they conducted human experiments just like ShinRa, but who am I to argue with Game Informers?

Two games.

Same developers,
Same publishers,
Similar genres,
Most probably same fictional universe,

Unrelated? I think not.

Wow, really? I think that's a strong assumption done here.

Anyway, Aperture Science feels out of place, it sounds like they just wanted to fit some Portal in there to be popular. Otherwise seems like a good list.

moxco 06-16-2010 01:45 AM

Well seeing as the same developers incorporated the same company in two different games I would say they are set in the same fictional universe.

SW has fuzzles and Vykkers in it, that's (most likely) how we know it's set in OddWorld.

There wasn't much evil about Sekto Springs, just what Sekto did to Stranger, and Vykkers Labs was just cruelty with a purpose, not true evil.

Vykkers Labs exploits people's bodily concerns, health panics and fear of death to justify sadism. They surreptitiously poison consumers to ensure they'll provide more custom. They dump toxic waste. They make species extinct in their production of status-symbol food. They want to dissect a living, sapient creature to discover more about long life. That's pretty damn evil.

Sekto Springs disrupts the flow of water: droughts downstream cause civilizations to starve and cultures to turn on one another; flooding upstream displaces peoples and rots vegetation into greenhouse gasses. On both sides, ecosystems are smashed. Privatization of the water illegalizes natural and sustainable food production of the natives. It supports terrorist groups. It lies to consumers. That's pretty damn evil.

I think They should add Mann Co. to their list(Team Fortress 2) for giving experimental weaponry to avarage players for example the shovel that soldier has, sometimes bursts into flames,Soldier claims that his hand is a fireproof mass of scar tissue! Don't Beleive me? Check this out:http://www.teamfortress.com/macupdate/comic/

MeechMunchie 06-16-2010 08:21 AM

Mann Co. isn't evil. Just legally flexible. Saxton Hale won't take shit from no lawman.
