The Almighty Raisin

Hi everyone, just an idle question since i was curious and I'm sure I'm not the only one:- When exactly did the Almighty Raisin come into things? In AO and AE, we see Bigface as the kind of spiritual leader of the Mudokons, and then Abe as their Messiah. But then we come to MO, and suddenly there's a huge fat blob in charge of the Mudokons instead. Any idea why they did it? Oh, I'm not saying they didn't need that sort of character, in fact he was essential to the plot, but what was wrong with bringing back the Bigface? Why invent a completely new species which we've never come across before, even though it is the leader of the central character? Whew, nice toget that off my chest! Any answers welcome.

See that thread up there? Called "Questions and Answers"? See it? Right there? Use it.

The Raisin is an Elderling, an ancient race of mystics that start out as trees and evolve into sentient beings. Think the Ents of Oddworld. He's been living with the Mudokons for a while, hiding from the hand of industry deep underground in a cave.
They didn't bring back Bigface because Abe surpassed his teachings, and had become worthy of receiving wisdom directly from the Raisin as opposed to a mediator.

The Big Face, as far as we're aware, is still the spiritual leader of the Mudokons. The Raisin, however, is a much revered prophet and mystic. He has a couple of things over Big Face. Firstly, his age: he's well over 14 thousand years old, making him wise and experienced in all manner of things. Then there's his astral projection abilities that give him unique intel as well as insight into the minds of every inhabitant of Mudos. And of course there's his precognition of possible future events, which is quite handy information to be able to act on.

Plus, they needed a new character...one who actually says something, as opposed to Bigface. And one who can fall asleep and make for bad gags.

GlukkonGluk 06-12-2010 01:52 AM

Ah yes, Oddworld would have been a duller place without those good old sleeping gags...

I recall from Alf, that he said Big Face got his mask from some Antique shop. So being a leader he not as wise as Mighty Raisen. The raisen is so old that he sleeps all the time^^

enchilado 06-13-2010 07:10 PM

Yes, I think Alf did say Big Face swapped some old magazines for it. But that doesn't mean he actually did so.

MeechMunchie 06-13-2010 11:16 PM

Yeah, Alf isn't famed for taking queries too seriously. He was definitely joking.

Sekto Springs 06-14-2010 12:17 AM

I think he also suggested that Bigface only wears it to hide a pair of wicked buckteeth.

Alf speaks fluent non-canon.
