So, about that Oil spill.

Why isn't there a thread about this already?

Bullet Magnet 06-10-2010 10:12 AM

Less spill, more haemorrhage.

Josh 06-10-2010 10:30 AM

For something that is supposed to be the worst enviromental disaster in US history, there sure is a lack of press coverage here.

Bullet Magnet 06-10-2010 10:36 AM

As journalists go, we collectively suck. Sometimes it seems all our efforts are directed toward covering decade-old video games.

MeechMunchie 06-10-2010 10:36 AM

It's the environment. Nobody cares.

OANST 06-10-2010 11:06 AM

Good old British Petroleum. No longer willing to rape us, they decided to destroy our coastline. Thanks Britain!

Bullet Magnet 06-10-2010 11:13 AM

And our pensions are becoming more worthless as a result.

Of course, it's worth mentioning that the company working the rig when it exploded was American.

Josh 06-10-2010 11:21 AM

And thank YOU for the whole Iraq kerfuffle.

OANST 06-10-2010 11:22 AM

You're welcome.

Well i thought because i'm in the UK it won't be shown that often because its mainly a US news story. but if it isn't even viewed alot in the US i'm puzzled.

OANST 06-10-2010 01:00 PM

It's constantly in the news here. It's destroying our fucking coastline.

Crashpunk 06-10-2010 02:08 PM

Man that really awful. :(

enchilado 06-10-2010 02:28 PM

To get serious analyses of hurricanes and oil slicks, see Jeff Masters' blog. To get serious discussions of worst-case scenario thinking, see Bruce Schneier's blog. To get enough Vitamin D, don't read any blogs and go outside instead.

Bullet Magnet 06-10-2010 03:10 PM

Given enough time, and enough platforms, it is bound to happen. See how many rigs were permitted to exist in the Gulf in 2006

Wings of Fire 06-10-2010 03:42 PM

It's been in the top three news stories on BBC's live feed for weeks.

EDIT: And weeks is a blatent exaggeration, I mean of course 'Since it happened'

Slag? 06-10-2010 05:00 PM

Well, the spill hasn't affected me
I am in the US and at the top of it, so if it ever does effect me, it won't be for a while
But I just felt like posting, so I did
:D

That's probably because it's the worst environmental disaster in US history, but sadly not the worst environmental disaster (or even the worst oil spill) in world history overall.

I've been getting my news updates, just like I learn about everything else going on in the US, from The Daily Show.

BP blamed the company working the rig. The company blamed their contractor who actually installed the pipe. That contractor... was Halliburton, and everyone's happy to blame them for everything.

Fuck you. I live in Australia but I still care.

I'll be laughing at the other side of your face when something does happen to you.

I'm in the UK.

The most i've seen is stuff about it getting worse occasionaly.

MA 06-10-2010 11:18 PM

i've been trying to learn the in's and out's of the whole thing via BBC morning news, but they just go over the same shit you already know. it really is a terrible thing to happen.

EDIT:

it really is a terrible thing to happen.

this sounds fucking stupid. obviously its terrible.

Oh, if only, Xavier.

Yes, it sucks tremendously, and if I could, I would spend this summer doing volunteer work there. But we made our bed, and now we're sleeping in it.

Hazel-Rah 06-11-2010 09:27 PM

Why aren't our flags at half-mast for this?? oh right it's just the environment.

Meh, to be honest, until we all have gay little solar powered cars and spacious turf houses that allow us to be self sufficient (we will extract methane and convert it to carbon neutral fuel by attaching poles deep into our ass holes,) this stuff'll keep happening!

Clear it up, nurse the wildlife and return to more important matters like North Korea, My wages in the furture and who will win the Rugby world cup in 2011!

Yeah. It's that easy.

Hazel-Rah 06-14-2010 03:22 PM

Hydrogen fuel cells ftw.

We're not going to see an alternative to fossil fuels in our lifetime because the oil companies would never allow it. Altruistic scientists can be bought, anyone can be bought, nuff said.

Havoc 06-14-2010 03:58 PM

I like how BP keeps screaming their doing their best to collect the oil. God forbid they just plug the hole up.

moxco 06-14-2010 11:42 PM

Wow, you should be on their board of directors Havoc! The world would be a much different place if we all had your mental capacity.

abe is now! 06-15-2010 01:20 AM

I heard it's worse than Chernobyl's diaster... in fact I think they will never clean the sea.
