Why Oddworld is so special.
I can remember when I was 4 and my brother was 6 and we used to watch our mum play on the Abe's Oddysee PSX demo. We really liked it, so we played Abe's Oddysee in real life with my brother being Abe and me being a Mudookon and he would lead me around and we would pretend to dodge grinders, jump over bombs, pull levers etc.
I find it quite amazing how Abe's Oddysee had an influence on us at such a young age. That's why I think Oddworld games are so special. :) |
I know. I was about 11 or 12 when I first played them on my PC. They were awesome. Then I came back a year ago and played MO and SW for the first time ever. I'm still really fond of Oddworld, but I did write tons of fanfics a few months ago.

Yeah it sure is,
I remember being amazed as a little kid by the artwork, at that time I thought it was all hand painted (Later I found out it was 3D). I wanted to draw because of oddworld, its the reason I became a concept artist / Illustrator! -Brun http://www.bruncroes.blogspot.com |
Oooh, shiny, I like oddworld art as well that why i have da book

Same. I was seven or eight when I first played the AE demo, I loved it. I got the full game soon afterwards. I remember pretending to be a Slig, I always thought they were the coolest.
|
It was influential in that I spent most of the time spent as a 10/11 year old drawing in maths and science and maths, I used to get home and draw from the AO booklet as well. I too was thinking of doing concept art for a future profession (although the likely hood is that I won't)

Oddworld used to scare the bejeezus out of me. That's why I like it.
|
To me, whenever I play the first RuptureFarms level in AO, it's like going home again.
|
I was about 8/9 years old, played the the Exoddus demo and loved it. I remember getting my first Playstation console, Christmas '99 and what game did I get? Abe's Exoddus! I didn't even ask for the game. Me and a friend used to draw storyboards out, inspired by Oddworld. We called it Slogworld. Great memories. If I ever find some of these drawings, I'll post 'em.
|
Also, I forgot to mention, I can remember when I was 4 and at playgroup and I drew a picture of Abe. Then, as I couldn't write, I got the adult supervising us to write 'RuptureFarms' at the top of the page for me. :)
And also I can remember when I was 6 and I was eating dinner, I stuck fries up my nose and talked like Abe would. :) |

I was four, five, six when I played Oddysee and Exoddus for the first time. I played them all day long and got strange seizures almost every night (there were also a small label warning about this in the game's cover).

Its so far from the norm, its so unique, there is no game like it. The art is pretty, you need to make plans to progress. Unless you dont care that your fellow Mudokens die. :( I couldplay this game all day. God, I hope they make a new one. To be honest, I want it to be a 2D side scroller too..
|
I doubt they'll make a new 2D Oddworld game, but I also wish they would. I haven't played either of the 3D ones but I can't imagine them being as good. I love the movement of AO/E so much...
|
Oddworld was and is still very inspiring. I remember my brother and I used to draw our own "Oddworld puzzle rooms" and see if we could solve each other's rooms.
|
I played AO when the first demo arrived on ps and then i bought the game, and played both on pc and ps,after i bought abes exoddus on pc and ps,i was about 2/3 years old,and i pretend i was abe,so i sneaked throught dark parts in our house hiding from them, and then running right near them when they saw me,i played with my friends telling them about the game and imitating a slig when we were playing :D
and when i play the game i remember everything in past, its just like a second home :D |

Munch's Oddysee was a bit of a disappointment in many regards. In its defense it had alot to stand up against given the vast, memorable images presented in AO and AE. Considering that MO was supposed to take place in similar settings, its kind of a let-down. Of course, the environments in AO/E were designed for a 2D game and wouldn't transpose well into the a three-dimensional environment. The whole "catwalk" level scheme so prevalent in the first two games was replaced with a "factory floor" scheme in MO. This wasn't a bad move, but the industrial levels were all painfully short and didn't have that massive feel that Rupturefarms or Soulstorm Brewery had. Of course, OWI didn't have access to an engine that could support such graphics at the time either. Stranger's Wrath fixed a few of those errors by making the environments much more expansive, giving room for some free-roaming. Sekto Springs Dam and the Wolvark Citadels did well in creating vast indoor environments more reminiscent of AO/E. |
I remember playing AO-demo at my friends house when I was like 7 or 8. It was the first game that had an effect of me. The puzzles and the concept of the game. Especially the artwork and music. When I play AO or AE it really does feel like going back home.
To this very day I listen to the music of AO and AE in my room. The music makes me feel relaxed and not so anxious about life :fuzwink: |
i think the industrial setting does it for me. anything that belches black smoke is fine in my book.

It's like they've visited another parallel universe that has it's timeline separated from ours and the machines are in a way similar (they do the same things as our machines do), but they've been created in a different setting. Gotta love it. |
Native is where its at. All the trees and animals and...stuff.
