Lorne Lanning's Top 10 Animated movies

Has this been posted before? I couldn't find it on the Oddblog. It's from a 1997 article published in the "Animation World Magazine", I personally haven't seen it until just now so I'm posting it in hopes that some of you will get a few good laughs out of it.
:

Lorne Lanning’s Picks:
“To truthfully answer these questions I must first consider our most basic human needs. The good news is that many of these needs can be substituted with a theatrical experience. I know this to be true because they taught me about it in art school. So, (drum roll please) here are the ten animated movies that I would want with me if I were Gilligan.”
  1. Xmas in South Park by Trey Parker and Matt Stone. To give me hope... and get through my darkest moments.
  2. Fantasia (Disney). I know everyone loves this film, and I know that it is one of the greatest animated movies of all time. But I would bring it along to help me get some sleep.
  3. Dumbo (Disney). For when I thought about how lonely I was, at least there would be someone I could make fun of.
  4. Ghost in the Shell by Mamoru Oshii. So that when I got really mad thinking about why my family left me on this island... I could watch someone else being hurt.
  5. They’re Back! (Amblimation) I’ve always loved the animation, but the story has been proven to have adverse affects on dysfunctional people. So this film would be for when I desperately needed a laxative.
  6. The Secret of Nimh by Don Bluth. I always had a soft spot for rats as they continually gave me comfort through the low points in my childhood. (Please don’t laugh. It’s true.)
  7. Ninja Scroll by Yoshiaki Kawajiri. Because I would need at least one exercise video and my supernatural shadow crawl still needs a little work.
  8. All Dogs go to Heaven (MGM). Because sometimes I would feel like biting someone too.
  9. Fritz the Cat by Ralph Bakshi. To remind me that things could have been worse.
  10. Akira by Katsuhiro Otomo. Because I would finally have the time to figure out the story.

Dangit man, this guy has got good taste! The Secret of NIMH, is freaking awesome :D

That's great, man. I actually think I did wonder about this for awhile. I can definitely agree with the Don Bluth films (All Dogs Go to Heaven, The Secret of NIMH). One of my favorite directors. :3

It's very interesting. Nice find. C:

This being a 1997 interview, it wouldn't be on OddBlog, which started in 2003. It is there in our list of interviews, though.

I'd be more interested to see how such list would look now, 13 years and lots of CGI later.

Lord Stanley 03-15-2010 12:38 PM

I've only heard of the two Disney ones, and I don't care for either of them. Yeah, shoot me.

Xavier 03-15-2010 11:26 PM

Ouch that brought some old memories back... :D

I agree with Max, I'd love to see what an updated list would look like now.

Well, he works in animation. He's bound to mention at least one or two good films in that pile of garbage that he rattled off.

It is my considered opinion that at the time of writing that list Lorne had never watched My Neighbor Totoro, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind or Pom Poko.

Zukan 03-16-2010 07:13 AM

Today, the list would include at least all of these:

Freaky Flickers The Movie
A Car's Life
The Little Panda Fighter
The Prodigy
Ratatoing
The new Food Fight movie with Charlie Sheen and Hilary Duff!

Praise be to CGI.

Sekto Springs 03-16-2010 06:56 PM

Oh god, Freaky Flickers. I can't believe I'm not the only one familiar with that.
I got in huge trouble on Youtube for making a poop of it. Apparently the creator himself spent a whole week on Youtube waving copyright law in the faces of anyone who posted anything Freaky Flickers related on their channel. I was one of the first he harassed.

He must not want anyone to hear of it.

He must not want anyone to hear of it.

Actually, the impression I got from him was that he was extremely proud of it and didn't want anyone tarnishing his baby.

crimsonxking 03-18-2010 12:26 AM

Correct me if I am mistaken, but that list is not of his top 10 favorite animated movies. The question seems to be what 10 animated movies he would take with him if he were stranded on a desert island, and from his answers, it seems many of them were listed jokingly, for reasons of use on the island.

For example, "I would bring it along to help me get some sleep" and "For when I thought about how lonely I was, at least there would be someone I could make fun of" in particular make them sound like movies he probably wouldn't have picked if asked "What are your favorite animated movies".

I think most of you guys are reading the list the wrong way. :/

Xavier 03-19-2010 03:38 AM

Thanks for the correction, I also had the impression some of the members were misinterpreting the list.

OANST 03-19-2010 06:35 AM

No. I get that some of them were jokes, but still. There wasn't a lot of gold there.

Zukan 03-19-2010 07:14 AM

I got the impression he only added the satirical comments for fun.
I mean most of the examples has nothing to do with being stranded on an island, and even if that was the case, it's not very funny in context with the subject. There are far better examples to choose from if they really did ask him such a weird question. I think you might be reading into the title a little bit too much.

XMAS in south park over fantasia? Hmm

Alector 03-20-2010 06:01 AM

Fritz The Cat? OMG I remember watching it and thought myself that it was created by crazy people for crazy people. ;)

OANST 03-20-2010 09:31 AM

That was actually one of the good films that he mentioned. I love Bakshi.

Sekto Springs 03-24-2010 08:20 AM

Bakshi is indeed a bit of a god.

Leto 03-24-2010 08:00 PM

I found one of Lorne Lanning's shopping lists once back in the '90s, should I post it so we can discuss it?

Sekto Springs 03-24-2010 08:08 PM

Was K-Y on it?

Leto 03-24-2010 08:11 PM

And red food colouring.
