Vista and Abe's Exoddus

I am in a bit of a pickle. I'd like to play Abe's Exoddus, but the only computer that I've gotten it to work on is becoming quite slow, and makes it difficult to play. So I've made many attempts to get it to run on Vista. Unfortunatly, none have been succesful.

I have treid running it in compatability mode, but a windows error message appears claiming the program has stopped working. Running it without, results in a message saying it's not supported on Windows NT. I've tried to run it through DOSBox, but I have little skill in that, so my attempts have all failed. I have searched with Google, but I have yet to find something that works. I have tried to use Virtual PC, but I don't seem to have a Windows 98 or 95 OS disk. So now, I turn to the OWF.

I have Vista Home Premium, and my version of Abe's Exoddus is european. Does anyone know if it's possible to run this game on Vista? If so, does anyone know how?

I do have a back-up plan, but that involves buying the game again from GOG.com, which I will most likely have to do, but I would rather play without having to pay again.

That's strange, I have vista Home Premium and AE works fine with no compatibility settings. I have no idea what version or type of AE it is though. My advice is, if you experiment with the compatibility settings and it still wont work, wait for Oddbox on Steam. It'll definately work through steam

My AE is 2000 - 2001, and Australian, I think. It works without problems on Vista Home Premium.

Is your disk older? Don't know if that'd make a difference, though.

I'm sure I posted a link on how to solve this problem a couple of years ago. If you could find that file just extract it into your installation folder.

EDIT: Sorry that was for XP my mistake :(

My disk is from approximatly... 11-9 years ago. I did actually manage to get a virtual PC running that uses Windows 95 now, but I have encountered yet another problem. If I attempt to start the game, after about twelve seconds of loading the game, it claims the CD is not inserted and quits. Anybody have any ideas on how to get around this? I have managed to get some other games to work, but not Exoddus.

Is your disk scratched or anything?

alf's brother's mate 02-28-2010 12:28 PM

Bugger. If I were you then i'd just hang around for a bit and await the arrival of the oddbox. It seems the logical and easy thing to do. I'm sorry I can't be of any further use, Oddey.

I too used to have problems with AE and Vista but my main problem is that I losed the disk :tard:

Whats the letter of your cd drive? I'm sure its hard coded in the game to only look for drive D or something

No-CD patch http://www.gameburnworld.com/gp/game...sexoddus.shtml

ONLY DOWNLOAD IF YOU OWN AND PURCHASED ABE'S EXODDUS, I AM NOT HELD RESPONCIBLE FOR PIRACY.

You do realise that if you copy the enire cd to you exoddus directory, it loads files from there.

1.Install exoddus
2.use no cd patch.
3.copy all files from cd to exoddus directory (c:\program files\ Abe's exoddus/
4.Run!
5.Enjoy!

If this works a little rep is nice :)

My CD drive happens to be called F:, but I think I'll try MLG's solution.
EDIT: The game does start up, but the patch makes to game run extraordinarily choppy. It takes about one second to get to another frame. Sound is also wacked out and the game isn't playable. Thanks for being considerate though.:D

Any other ideas on what might work?

I think you should try a sane soultion.. like change your cd rom drive letter to D

Oddey 03-01-2010 10:43 AM

I've attempted to change the virtual PC's drive name to D, which is still called F on my actual OS, but that doesn't really help much. I doubt it's helped anything though, as I still get the problem. I may have done something wrong though so it'd be nice to have step-by-steo solution. And then I'd also need to know if I have to change both the virtual PC's disk name and the real OS, or only one of them.

So... The easiest option I have at the moment is... Wait for the Oddbox. While I will buy that, I'd rather be able to play right now, because I think it'll be delayed for some time.

Ah I didnt know you had it running in a VM.. why do you have it in a VM?

Namida 03-01-2010 03:31 PM

He mentioned it before, a Windows 95 VM was the best way he could come up with to get it to run.

Anyway, I don't know about Vista, but for me both Oddysee and Exoddus run on Win7 64bit just fine... :/

Lord Stanley 03-02-2010 02:31 AM

I have a Vista, and AO and AE work just fine.

RoryF 03-06-2010 06:42 AM

That's weird. I have both games running on Windows 7 Home Premium (Build 7600) without any compatibility sets. Although one error occurs when closing AO. C:\Program Files\Abe's Oddysee\BMP\ODD.bmp invalid screen resolution. DISC INFO: Abe's Oddysee 1997 Abe's Exoddus 1998. So the copies I got were the old ones. Try re-installing. Or try installing that DirectX thing because mine works really good with that.

Oddey 03-28-2010 07:51 AM

I have finally solved this problem. My uncle gave me his old windows 98, and now I can play old games to my heart's content.:D

Now I can beat the game before the Oddbox is released.
