Archive or Remove old topics

To be honest I thought this system was already in place.
Topics more than a year old should be automatically locked forever.

This would solve the "posting on old threads" problem, right?

Wings of Fire 01-31-2010 12:15 PM

Topics more than six years old ARE locked in place, try to post in them or quote from them and you'll get a message telling you to contact an admin.

Wil 01-31-2010 12:16 PM

It's not much of a problem. It happens rarely, affects very little, and is easy to fix. And since I can't find an option for it, it most probably would require a hack that'll make updating vBulletin an even bigger pain in the arse.

enchilado 01-31-2010 12:21 PM

I think topics over a week old should be deleted.

Wil 01-31-2010 01:12 PM

I think members over a week old should be deleted.

i think members over a week old should take a regular Common Sense test.

OddjobAbe 01-31-2010 02:16 PM

I am in favor of this.

Havoc 02-01-2010 06:16 AM

I was under the impression that any topic that hasn't been posted in for 3 months is automatically locked down?

I MEANT MONTHS DAMNIT

Wil 02-01-2010 06:51 AM

Clearly that doesn't prevent people from posting in them.

Wings of Fire 02-01-2010 06:54 AM

I don't recall a topic of late that was revived after six months.

MA 02-01-2010 07:44 AM

there's been a few in FC. only ones i've noticed, and it always seems to be some hapless newbie going "OMG this is great! hope to see more! ;)". i can't stand the niceness. IT WAS OVER 3 YEARS OLD FUCK

Wings of Fire 02-01-2010 07:46 AM

This link makes my point for me.

OANST 02-01-2010 07:55 AM

Yeah, they get locked. I had to ask Nate reopen one for me a while ago.

MA 02-01-2010 08:02 AM

considering this topic was made by AlexFili, who frequents FC, i would say the threads being revived there are what sparked this thread. but i think a lock on any thread in FC would be quite silly. people just need to learn how to use that thing they were born with, along with their eyes.

The one I know of is this thread about making a level editor, which obviously is a bit relevent since it's only now that folks are starting to work out how that might even be done.

I don't understand. That thread isn't more than six months old, there is no message advising users not to post in it, and I can't see that this subject comes up in it.

Firstly I was wrong and it was three, secondly you're an admin so you can't see the message you doodoo head.

OANST 02-01-2010 10:04 AM

You don't see it because you're a mod. The message states this: You are not permitted to reply to threads older than three months. If you feel your reply is important to the thread, please contact a Moderator for guidance.

Wil 02-01-2010 10:15 AM

For the record, I didn't expect to see a message for that exact reason.

EDIT: Also, NFI what kind of guidance I could give on the matter other than "tough titties".

Yes. FC has different rules to the rest of OWF, on explicit request from Splat.

Strange. I used to see a warning message even if it didn't actually stop me from posting.

As for what guidance you could give; if someone sends you a PM, you can either post in the thread to revive it, or you can tell them to create a new thread. Is that not guidance enough for you?

Wil 02-02-2010 02:52 AM

The former seems stupid, but I've done it before, then deleted my post. What a rendundant amount of effort.

I also remember seeing the message, but I can't remember if that was before I became an admin.

Nate 02-02-2010 03:50 AM

So you would prefer to have people create new threads rather than extend an existing one that is perfectly relevant but would take 30 seconds of your time?

Wil 02-02-2010 06:04 AM

I didn't say that in the slightest.

I know what you said. I was pointing out the contradiction therein.

Wil 02-02-2010 03:02 PM

So "Hang on, I'll just waltz over there, post something meaningless, then you can post and I'll delete my post" constitutes advice?

Nate 02-02-2010 07:33 PM

Well, the PM reply of "Okay, I'll fix that for you" constitutes advice.

Wil 02-03-2010 05:47 AM

Thanks for the advice.
