Origin of your username

What's the story behind your OWF username, why'd you pick it? Is it some elaborate inside joke, or simply a random word or string of words?

In my case, I picked Taco because I could not, for the life of me think of a proper username, and I love mexican food. It's also slang for vagina.

So what about you guys? I'm kinda curious (no, not bicurious) about OANST, is that an acronym for something?

Nate 01-09-2010 06:12 PM

*moves*

It's been a while since we had this discussion, so this shall live and thrive!

My original username was nate_dog_woof, which came from a bad joke amongst my circle of friends at the time that led to me being called "Nate Dog" for all of two weeks. When I signed up, I really couldn't think of anything better to use.

A few years back I got sick enough of it to ask for a change*. I considered Thorn, which is my most commonly used nickname but went with Nate instead simply because that was what everyone was already calling me here and because it was similar enough to nate_dog_woof as to avoid confusion. I'm still not entirely happy with it, mainly because it leads people to think that I want to be called 'Nate' in real life. Which I don't.

*I was an admin back then, so I could have made the change on my own, but username changes are regarded as such a big thing that I thought it best to get confirmation from the mod body anyway.

Hobo 01-09-2010 06:15 PM

Because I live under a fucking bridge.

Mac Sirloin 01-09-2010 06:17 PM

Kastere is just a gibberish name I made up when I was delivering newspapers about 4-5 years ago. I couldn't think of anything better at the time, but I'd like to change it now since I have something better that is also an anagram for my real name. So yeah.

At one point someone told me it was Dutch for 'drunk' but they were wrong.

Also, fun fact: Wings of Fire is also an attack from Gundam Wing, which WoF likes.

Wil 01-09-2010 06:18 PM

It's an Oddworld creature, and a name that alliterates with it.

T-nex 01-09-2010 06:25 PM

Something I randomly punched in cos I got frustrated at the names I wanted being taken... I really hate it. I'm terrible at coming up with names.

T-nex sounds like a cleaning solution <.< It rhymes with Kleenex.

Taco 01-09-2010 06:37 PM

All very interesting, and T-nex, your username for some reason reminds me of steak.

Pilot 01-09-2010 07:02 PM

Resident codgers-in-action probably remember the origin of my name because of the proper avatar that went along with it.

Pilot is (was) a character in a series that aired on the Sci-Fi channel called Farscape. He was joined to a living prisoner transport ship named Moya and controlled all of Moya's operations from a room in the center of the ship (affectionately named 'Pilot's Den') and communicated the ship's feelings and needs to the crew, and vice-versa.

Pilot was compassionate, intelligent, modest, arguably lonesome, along with young and mildly naive. Still my favorite Sci Fi character ever. His head always reminded me somehow of the Sydney Harbor Opera House.... being an Australian production; small wonder. Taco, this should answer your question also from another thread. ;)

This is Pilot:

mlg man 01-09-2010 07:06 PM

Well this forum was pretty much the first thing i signed up to so i choose mlg man cause mlg stands for my name : Michael Laurence *CENSORED* and i was 10 so go figure. I use mlgthatsme for everything now. What i would do to change my username to mlgthatsme... :(

Leto 01-09-2010 07:10 PM

Because I really like 30 Seconds to Mars.

Taco 01-09-2010 08:19 PM

Thanks for the info Pilot, who now mysteriously has the location and avatar that Used had. I was considering Pilot as my username for obvious reasons, but the I saw that there was another member with the name. I mean, I could've easily used some sort of variation of the word 'pilot' but I think I was drunk when I joined the forums because I don't remember doing it very clearly...

Disgruntled Intern 01-09-2010 08:19 PM

I think mine is fairly self explanatory.

Yeah, it's a party.

Sekto Springs 01-09-2010 09:11 PM

My original name was Sligslinger, which at the time I thought was so fucking clever. After being banned, I returned under Sekto Springs, only because it also contracts to "SS". Yeah, I'm that creative.

All things considered, I would love a name change, but apparently those have to be earned around here.

I see what you did there. ;)

Hey that's right.... I still remember the origin of your name from the LAST thread in which we discussed this recently.

Everybody in your group of friends had a superlame superpower and so you because Anonyman! in light of your puzzling powers of anonymity. Right?

mlg man 01-09-2010 10:21 PM

is it hard to get your name changed?
What are the secrets... :D

OddjobAbe 01-09-2010 11:23 PM

Mine was conceived just after I'd introduced my eldest nephew to Oddworld. Goldfinger was on the television, and my nephew (12 at the time) added "Abe" onto the end of everything I said. "Here's Oddjob." I told him.
"Abe!" he said. And this sprang to mind when I joined up. The "Abe" part bugs me a little bit now, but I've gotten used to it.

Oddey 01-10-2010 12:12 AM

Best thing I could come up with at the time. Fits the bill better than other aliases I use.

Grieva 01-10-2010 01:27 AM

In 2002 for D&T we had to make a piece of jewelry. I made Squall's pendant 'Griever' from FF8 and I had an unofficial guide that misspelt it 'Grieva', when I started playing NWN about then I needed a name, had it in my head and have used it ever since!

AlexFili 01-10-2010 01:50 AM

My username is extremely complicated.
I took the first four letters of my first name...
[and here's the clever bit]
and combined it with the FIRST four letters of my LAST name.

Pure genius I know.
Thank you, thank you.
[takes a bow for the audience]

abe is now! 01-10-2010 02:04 AM

Life is now! from an old Vodafone's advertisement.

Lack of originality I guess :p
