Google waves

So, who here's on the waves?

What are your opinions about it so far?

But more importantly: Who wants an invite? :p

Nate 11-27-2009 02:06 AM

Holy crap. Your the third person I know that has received/mentioned signing up to Wave in the last hour.

My thoughts:
  • I can't work out what the hell it's for
  • It's clearly not just an IM thing as it's clumsy trying to use it for that - especially in that I can't just hit enter to finish my message and then automatically start a new one at the bottom.
  • It's very laggy on my computer, so my typing appears after a second or two delay.
  • It's forcing me to be a better typer, as the other person can see what I'm trying in realtime.
  • What the hell is this for?!

enchilado 11-27-2009 02:09 AM

Sounds cool. I'd never heard of it before.

If you have enough invitations, you can send me one: munchilado ATTACK gmail DOTTY COMMERE.

Wil 11-27-2009 02:32 AM

Just got this recently thanks to a friend of a schoolfriend. So far I've only chatted with Xav and Nate. Still trying to find a reason to remember to sign in every day, but it's still novel and fun. I can see all the potential applications... in theory. All the extra clicking while IMing is making my mouse perspire.

Wings of Fire 11-27-2009 03:16 AM

Invite me =D

T-nex 11-27-2009 04:51 AM

What is it? ... Sounds like fun :p.... If anyone feels like it I'd like to try it out too.. Is it just a chatting program?

EDIT: Reading about it.. seems to go beyond just being a chat program...

abe619 11-27-2009 06:15 AM

looks cool just joined Gmail for it , cause i know it will be flooded with oddworld forumites.

T-nex 11-27-2009 06:18 AM

How many invites does one get?

Schnappi 11-27-2009 06:28 AM

@everyone
Before You join this hype, think about this: "Do you really need it?". It's highly possible, that you have ICQ, Skype, 3 e-mail addresses, etc. So why the heck you need another program in your SysTray? There are more reasons to let it go.

Although it's not bad to just try it. But I don't think it's going to be so "sUp4 DUpA @wes0mE", that somebody with internet, 3 communication programs and lots of other crap would really need it.

Hmm. What is it? :p

I use gmail in case anyone wants to hit me up. :D

Leto 11-27-2009 12:18 PM

Ok so I've had my account for a number of months, and I still don't get wtf this crap is. Is it like twitter x instant messaging? If so do not want

abe is now! 11-27-2009 01:00 PM

It makes me think of gobalization... will it incorporate MSN?

Sekto Springs 11-27-2009 01:09 PM

I'm fine with MSN, and everyone else has it too so to hell with Google and all of it's bumfuckery.

enchilado 11-27-2009 02:24 PM

MSN's okay... I guess. I frigging hate Windows Live Messenger though. It's so glossy, and it has ads everywhere.

Anyway, if you would read about Google Waves, it's nothing like MSN. It's more like Etherpad or something. And I WANT IT.

If anyone has an invitations, my email's up there.

It's not in your SysTray; you need a browser window open.

This is not a replacement for MSN/AIM/ICQ. It's something new and quite different. I'm not yet sure what it's for, but my best guess is that it would be good for a collaborative group discussion.

Havoc 11-27-2009 04:15 PM

So it's like... what... online meeting project workspace or something? You can work on stuff while others watch in real time and point things out? I don't get it :S

Sekto Springs 11-27-2009 04:18 PM

I see alot of "wtf"s and not alot of "this is awesome"s.
Not really the best review.

Strike Witch 11-27-2009 04:25 PM

I wouldn't mind trying it, but is it invite-only or something?

Pretty much my analysis also. My vibe is that Google created a technology, put it out in to the world and said "Here, work out what it's for".

It's just like gmail was at first; each person with an account can invite a certain number of friends.

Strike Witch 11-27-2009 04:44 PM

Oh, I see. Do you need a Gmail to get it?

Nate 11-27-2009 04:48 PM

You need a google account.

T-nex 11-27-2009 05:09 PM

I have a Gmail account... If someone wants to send me an invite, I'd be more than happy to accept :) Given my education that I'm at, it's a good idea for us to stay updated with the trends of the internet o.o So I'd appreciate if anyone can 'get me in' :p

We study such things as social websites, communication and yada yada.

I bet it's one of those things that will die out really quickly, or some dude finds some amazing use for it that makes it immensely popular... Or it will sort of just become a things that's just there... Like MSN/Live spaces... Does anyone actually use those?

Think about Twitter though; it started off as an incredibly simple bit of technology that hardly anyone was using. Then the userbase developed certain habits (like hashtags and referring to people with the @). And, after many years, the whole thing exploded and everyone was using it.

Leto 11-27-2009 06:10 PM

the first person i ever saw using a twitter was stephen fry, because somebody told me he was twittering from new zealand. this was february (?) of this year, and i thought it seemed in it's infancy then, but it started in 2006 o.O

Sekto Springs 11-27-2009 06:30 PM
