Hey, anyone remember that Gay Jesus play?

Transsexual Jesus sparks protests

Jesus, Queen of Heaven portrays Christ as a transsexual
About 300 protesters held a candlelit protest outside a Glasgow theatre over the staging of a play which portrays Jesus as a transsexual.

The protest was held outside the Tron Theatre, where Jesus, Queen of Heaven - in which Christ is a transsexual woman - is being staged.

It is part of the Glasgay! arts festival, a celebration of Scotland's gay, bi-sexual and transsexual culture.

Festival organisers said it had not intended to incite or offend anyone.

The Christian protesters gathered outside the theatre ahead of the opening night of the production on Tuesday.

Jesus, Queen of Heaven, which runs until Saturday, is written and performed by transsexual playwright Jo Clifford.

The demonstrators sang hymns and waved placards.

One read: "Jesus, King of Kings, Not Queen of Heaven."

Another said: "God: My Son Is Not A Pervert."

Festival organisers described the banners as "fairly provocative" and said they could be viewed as inciting homophobia.

Glasgay! producer Steven Thomson said: "Jesus Queen of Heaven is a literary work of fiction exploring the artist's own personal journey of faith as a transgendered person.

"Glasgay! supports the right to freedom of expression and offers audiences a diverse view of LGBT life.

"This work is not intended to incite or offend anyone of any belief system. However, we respect your right to disagree with that opinion."

He added: "We welcome genuinely interested audience members who wish to understand the artistic intention behind this work."

'Christianity marginalised'

Pastor Jack Bell, of the Zion Baptist Church in Glasgow, who took part in the protest, said: "We didn't threaten anyone going into the play or any of the cast members.

"It was a peaceful protest with hymns and placards.

"You can't blaspheme God and use freedom of speech as an excuse for that."

He added: "True biblical Christianity is becoming marginalised through political correctness.

"If this play had treated the prophet Mohammed in the same way there would have been a strong reaction from the Islamic community, but that just wouldn't happen."

Glasgay! is described as "Scotland's annual celebration of queer culture" and is funded by the Scottish Arts Council, Event Scotland, Glasgow City Marketing Bureau and Glasgow City Council.
Funnily enough the LGBT have their annual debate tonight, this one is entitled 'Is Religion Compatible with Homosexuality?'.

Discuss, flame, gape, whatever. I myself thought this looks delightful, shame it's too late to book tickets.

One thing I want to argue about is the proper use of the word 'funnily.' It should be capitalized.

I love the obligatory you-wouldn't-do-this-to-Islam rhetoric.

I seem to recall the tiniest token of doing this to Islam a few years ago, at least twice. People died.

Frankly, I'm torn between the responsibility of not doing it about Islam if it risks lives, and the necessity of doing it about Islam for the same reason we don't pay kidnapping ransoms: we cannot prove that violence is an effective means to repress freedom of speech.

Wings of Fire 11-04-2009 10:05 AM

I'd do it against Islam, seeing how their mainstream religious leaders decide to act in that situation would be quite the baptism of fire.

But of course a: Christians don't care about inconvenient facts like that when there's hyperbole to maintain, and b: Muslims don't seem to care for any depiction of Jesus as a divine being.

I bet Splat's had a heart attack, or at least has hyperventilated.

I come from a Christian background, and although I wouldn't necessarily approve of the way they went about it, I don't mind it as such. It's one man's expression of his journey of faith as a transsexual, not some guy that thought "Hurpa derp, let's piss off Christfags today for the sake of it!" They're lucky they didn't stage this in Texas or something though. Christians in the UK only seem to express moderate annoyance.

Well yeah. We all knew that. He just isn't the son of God in Islam.

Munch's Master 11-04-2009 03:02 PM

I think if this was about Mohammed there would be a bigger ruckus kicked up about it, but whatever happens I just figure, it's not saying "JESUS WAS GAY AND TRANSSEXUAL". It's a personal twist on it for a bit of fun, at the end of the day.

Bullet Magnet 11-04-2009 04:34 PM

I think that if people can get up in arms over prodding ideas like this, it's important do do it for that reason alone. It's not cool to say "Christians are such-and-such" because that is attacking people with generalisations (it is okay, however, if it is categorically true, but expect to be required to back up such remarks with evidence). But when you say such-and-such about a religion, or indeed any idea, that is perfectly fine. Because that is attacking an idea, which is an essential freedom in the free exchange of ideas. Now, that statement might be entirely wrong, in which case you respond by explaining which and ask for evidence to the contrary. Then we get a useful dialogue opening by which either one or more parties will learn something, or simply a really bad and incorrect idea will get the rousing thrashing and ridicule it deserves, publicly.

Any censorship, or campaign for censorship, is an attack on freedom of speech and the free exchange of ideas, and should be treated as such.

This seems less "let's be open minded" and more "HOLY FUCK WE LOVE ATTENTION"

like me

OANST 11-04-2009 07:12 PM

Attention is pretty cool.

Without reading the actual article, I agree with this. I want to see Mohammed and Allah making out and put posters of it all over Mosques.

Nate 11-04-2009 07:56 PM

And what, precisely, would that acheive?

Havoc 11-04-2009 07:57 PM

It would piss off people and I like pissing people off.

Nate 11-04-2009 08:51 PM

Well, at least you're honest about it and not making up some bullshit about personal expression and your own personal journey of faith as a transgendered person provocative, attention-seeking bastard. ;)

shaman 11-05-2009 06:38 AM

I'm with Havoc, being deliberately infamatory is the shit.

MeechMunchie 11-05-2009 08:58 AM

This may be an old chestnut, but:
Why do loads of Christians hate homosexuals?
Because the Bible says it is wrong.
Why does the Bible say homosexuality is wrong?
Because the people on whom's behalf it was written thought it was wrong.
Why did the religious officials think homosexuality was wrong?
Because the disciples of Jesus thought it was wrong.
Why did the disciples of Jesus think homosexuality was wrong?
Because Jesus thought it was wrong.
Why did Jesus think homosexuality was wrong?
Because God said it was wrong.
Why does God think homosexuality is wrong?
You can't question God! Get lost, you foul heathen!

Anonyman! 11-07-2009 11:51 PM

The play seems to be designed for the sole purpose of pissing of Christians. Which is idiotic and childish, but whatever.

Yes, but also basically a fundamental of life.

Havoc 11-08-2009 10:44 AM

Christians piss me off all the time. Why should they be allowed to piss off other people while not being pissed off themselves? :)

Most of human expressionism is childish. It's just how humans are. And how do you know it was made solely for the purpose of pissing people off? I bet you haven't even met the guy behind it.

I doubt it is honestly, Jesus means a lot to a lot of people.

Bullet Magnet 11-10-2009 07:01 PM

Whether or not this play is any good is entirely dependent on whether or not it has the song "Keep Your Jesus off My Penis".
