what's your os?

operating system which one do you use?

i use ubuntu 9.04 jaunty jacklope , beats microsuck's windows , uses less resources , less disc space , gets alot of support , cooler , open-source , faster ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FEvD9RHlccc ).

only 2 cons : harder to use , can't use most windows apps on it's own.

both are getting better each day.

AlexFili 10-26-2009 03:48 PM

Windows XP. I don't want to upgrade, EVER.

abe619 10-26-2009 04:03 PM

Mine's of Cumbria. It's water-proof. Very detailed.
I apologise to the Americans and other nationalities here - I don't believe you have Ordnance Survey maps.

is this just a thread where we post what OS we use and you just make annoying 'comparisons' on how terrible our OS's are?

i use God. pretty good, but you get a hell of a lot of email through a built-in inbox. don't even know where the fuck this stuff is coming from, people talking about diseases and homework and police charges.

but the junk mail is funny.

Alcar 10-26-2009 05:01 PM

Windows XP at work, and Vista at home.

Alcar...

Seikyo Jack 10-26-2009 05:09 PM

Windows XP, pure and simple. Linux/Ubuntu? To hell with third-party crap that isn't compatible with anything else. :P I'd probably use Mac OS for Photoshopping, but Windows stays the best in my opinion.

joshkrz 10-26-2009 05:10 PM

^ Now why do people always say that Macs are better for designing?

A stripped down version of Windows XP at home, Symbian FP2 on my phone and Mac OS X at college... Mac is horrible.

Mac is horrible.

I've been told Mac is better for graphical work and stuff, especially in the printing domain. Heck, I remember going at an open-doors day in a college and every Photoshoppers were using Macs.

joshkrz 10-26-2009 05:18 PM

It's not.

However it is true that most designers use Mac, but god knows why. They are more expensive, don't have right click and are not very customizable.

Anyone know of a technical reason behind it?

Wil 10-26-2009 05:19 PM

Ordinarily, or more accurately previously, Debian on my desktop (dual booting with XP for certain programmes), Arch on my netbook. But then I got a new desktop and decided to go with Arch on that too. But something went wrong, so I've been desktopping in XP since. Arch also broke on my netbook.

don't have right click

Yeah they do.

Compatibility I think. I guess some graphics files works better for printing from a Mac computer. Otherwise, I dunno.

Yeah they do.

By default they don't, unless you attach a Windows mouse. Unless you mean ctrl click, which isn't really right click :P But this is really a matter of preference, I'm just used to having two mouse buttons.

shaman 10-26-2009 06:34 PM

Vista for all my sins.

Pilot 10-26-2009 07:29 PM

I use Windows 2000 because it's fast and frill free.

Used that for a while before I knew my comp could run XP. Shame that it's not as customizable as XP, though. :P

Nate 10-26-2009 09:31 PM

Ubuntu and XP, depending on my mood.

Ubuntu for most of the day to day internetting and low-grade document stuff. XP for games.

moxco 10-26-2009 10:02 PM

XP services pack 3. My dad refused to buy Vista but now that Windows Seven has been released...

I think it's a thing that came from a time where Macs were actually better at image and video editing, probably because of better hardware at that time or something.

It's not like that anymore though. Not by a long shot. Photoshop or Adobe Premiere Pro won't suddenly run better or smoother because it's installed on a Mac, it's purely hardware and in that department PC's will always win because they are so heavily customizable.

Another reason people might prefer Macs over PC is because the screen of an iMac is pretty good when it comes to the true display of color (as in, what you see on the screen is what you get on paper) and the high resolution. But still, you can invest in a 500 dollar screen for a PC and have the same effect.

My housemate’s Mac has a five-button Mac mouse. You can’t hold default hardware against an OS. Fact is the OS supports right clicking.

That’s like saying "Windows doesn't have a printer, you have to install one!"

Strike Witch 10-27-2009 03:23 AM

Vista.

Josh 10-27-2009 03:35 AM

Windows XP SP 2. I did use 3, but my PC got the Blue Screen of Death and I had lost the disk.

Software Bug 10-27-2009 03:39 AM

Mac OSX Snow Leopard 10.6.1 :d Just love it.
Never looked back to Windows since I got my Mac two years ago :)

Bullet Magnet 10-27-2009 05:11 AM

I grew up with Pre OS X Macs, but my laptop is XP. Was XP, it passed away a few days ago.
