I Have an Idea.....

I Have an Idea…

“But Molluck was cool! He had a plan...”
Abe, Abe’s Oddysee

This thread is for posting any ideas you have for art, stories, games, videos or any other fan submissions that do not exist yet.
For example, if you have the idea for a game and you want to ask other people for help or let our fans know what you’re working on, you can post it here! To make things run smoothly, there are a few rules…

1. When you post an idea, you must give it a name. Then, when you reply to someone else’s project, you can refer to it by its given name. This should help keep things tidy. The name doesn’t have to be the name it will have as a finished piece; just a working title.

2. Please do NOT post requests here for help making a fan game or video when you have no experience or ability in making games or videos. You can’t expect someone else to do the work; download a game-maker (Wings of Fire recommends Yoyogames) and give it a go for yourself. Start with something small before trying to do a really huge project.

3. Some people in OWF’s past have attempted to create group art or literature projects. If you have an idea for a similar project, you can create a separate thread for it.

Once you have created something, be it the start of a story, a game demo, or anything else, you may create a thread for it and post it. Please note that if you post a game or a demo, you must include screenshots from the game along with the game file.

Obviously, you do not need to post your ideas here; if you’ve got something ready to post, just go ahead and create a thread for it!

The Week of a Slig - A Slig Platformer

This idea has been in my head for a while now. I want to make a semi-simplistic Slig Platform game (in Flash). I'm wondering whether to let the character jump, for now I'll keep jumping off.

My idea is to take a rookie Slig and then teach him the ropes. Day One will be the tutorial level. The rest of the days will be challenges of different difficulty. Two being the easiest and Seven being the hardest.

After that, they'll assume regular guard duty and react to disturbances in real time. You'd have a Quarma bar which would lead you to be called a 'Mudlover/Psychokiller' depending on your disposition. You could even potentially recruit other Sligs to help you, and buy Flying/Big Bro pants.

You'd get moolah to spend on new equipment and go and hang out with the other Sligs and drink brew. Maybe include a few minigames like a pool table or something similar.

These are my ideas so far, I'd like to have a couple of Glukkons and maybe a few Mudokons. What do you think?

Oddey 09-18-2009 04:32 AM

I think you should scrap the recruiting other sligs to help you, and buying the big-bro pants and such should not be bought, but depend on how well you perform your job. If you reach a certain level of efficiency, and such you should occasionally be given a promotion and your choice of either flying, or big-bro. Of course, you can decline if you want to stcik with your normal slig.

As for the minigames and drinking brew, you have to give the player a reason to do either one. I have no doubt you'll come up with something, but I wonder if you can pull this off. Go for it though.:D

I think this should have gone in the new 'I have an idea' thread. I'm gonna move these posts into there in a few hours (so you have time to know what I'm doing:fuzwink: )

Oh snap moderation in action.

I'm always a fan of Slig games. But if you really want to make it awesome I'd love to see it more action-oriented. Just lots and lots of shooting.

I know in AO I always made a little game out of possessing a Slig. I'd always say "Hi" to another Slig first to gain his trust. Then shout "Look Out" to warn him of his sudden demise. He would scream, but it would be too late. I would hold down the trigger and let out every single bullet until I knocked back. Then I laugh followed by the 'BS' and 'S'mo BS' sounds alternatively. If only there was a dance option afterwords. Could you imagine how high my Stylish points would be?

lol I had too much fun playing Sligs.

STM 09-18-2009 10:57 AM

Wow if this comes into frutition then it'll be a hit!

To counter your slig jupm problem, you could get pants that hadsprings in them like buy them from a locker for 600 M?

EDIT OOO OOO OOOH, @ Venks> I tend to say hi, look left right, left agian, s'mo'BS and empty a cartridge into his gut! Funny huh?

EDIT EDIT: And at Splat don't move it because it could beocme an update page, you don't know what your doing us gamemakers need a base page, not a cluster single page reduced to spamalot shit!

EDIT EDIT EDIT: Is any of the current gamemakers interested in joining together inot one massive OW fan commuity called OWIFG : Oddworld INDUSTRIES Fan Gamemakers PM me + ill post it into my page in a day or two

AlexFili 09-20-2009 12:21 AM

Interesting to hear of this 'Slig Behaviour' that players create. Maybe I could include a 'stylish' system for such things? I'll probably give the player the option to change pants at any time, like those lockers that are all around the place. However, each locker will be in a particular area. Not every area will be open on the first few days.

I had the idea of Swimming Pants so I'll try and run with that. It would be nice if Sligs could chat to each other, but I'm not sure how I'll get to randomize the chat at the moment. I'm going to try and create a random name system for all of the Sligs, so that you never get the same Slig per playthrough.

Right now, I'm not setting out to make another gung-ho action platformer.
However... that isn't to say that I won't make an action platformer in the future.
Perhaps if this platform engine I'm working on turns out well, I could make an action-based sequel. I particularly want to focus on team based organisations (ala SWAT).

Back to this one, I think that the moolah earned should only be enough for a few basic upgrades. I'd like the player to train and work for their skills (some skill-gaining activities will be easier than others, but will have negative side-effects). Right now I'm deciding on a seven day week, purely for ease of use.

I could also make a sandbox "Day Infinity", where the day count continues to rise as your Slig tries to maintain his job. I'd like to put a bit of psychology and humor in the game as well. I want to focus on some things that other games might not, such as Sligs in sleeping hammocks, crawling Sligs, etc.

I know I always write "goody-goody" Slig fanfics, but I'm hoping to put a morality system in the game, so you can decide to be good or evil. If the player goes too far in one direction, they may find themselves in sticky situations. Ganged up on by Sligs/Mudokons.

STM 09-20-2009 02:15 AM

very good, alex are you interested in becoming part of the OWIFG? We'd love your input.

AlexFili 09-20-2009 02:36 AM

I can help with little bits and pieces. Probably not more than 1-3 hours per week though.

STM 09-20-2009 02:41 AM

cool

AlexFili 09-20-2009 03:01 AM

I have a screenshot and a demo now. Can I make this into it's own thread yet?

I've made a basic platform engine. I've decided to use ladders (as featured in some of the MO videos of Sligs climbing them etc). I may also put elevators/lifts and escalators in later versions.

Let me know if something needs refining.

God ... Can you at least ONCE stop pretending you know everything, and that you'd be such a better moderator?? If you really want to be a mod, then contact either Alcar or any of the other admins and apply.

I think Splat runs things just fine. Why he wants to put unfinished ideas in one thread is because it keeps FC organized. Also, you wouldn't accept a thread about fan fic ideas, would you? Well.. Maybe you would, but most people don't.

You should be greatful that splat even adressed you game-makers' shout for attention.

Edit: as for the finished product that AlexFili made, I'm pretty sure that's thread-worthy,

Splat 09-20-2009 03:44 PM

T-nex, thanks for sticking up for me :D Just try and be... more polite next time ;) I know it can be really hard some times, but I realised a little while ago that by letting my anger vent on the forums I was becoming exactly what I'd told myself I never would when I first took the job. I want to foster all the good feelings that FC had back in the day and try and restore some of that close community feel we used to have all those years ago; I think FC is about the only place left on the forums that this is still possible. Oh, and hi to everyone reading this message! You guys rock the world!

Scrabtrapman, that comment was pretty discouraging. I hope I'm fairly on top of things around here, and I know what I'm doing (it's what you lot are doing that's giving me problems ;))

Alex, if you'd read the first post of this thread, and the new parts of the rules thread like you should have, you would know that when you have a demo and screenshots then you are allowed to create a thread for your game.

CakeSnatcher 09-20-2009 04:03 PM

I thought it was "Mollock was cruel"

Thank god we aren't all you then <_< I wish we could have that family-bond again here in FC, but with the current frequenters, I simply don't feel I can relate. And alot of people here are starting to annoy me a whole lot.

Also, I'm not going to be polite if I have something to say. I do not believe I was rude. Harsh, maybe. Rude? no.
I'm pretty sure Scrabtrapman can fend for himself and take in critique just fine.

Also, scrabtrapman. I'm sorry if I offended you in any way. That's not my goal. My goal is to make you rethink the things you post. Two of your posts in this thread have been pretty useless and could be considered spam(specially the one-word post, which I thought was against the rule).

Again, i'm sorry if I sound rude or whatever, but as opposed to Splat... I pretty much realized I can't be nice all the time. Specially since I have such a high sense for justice. I guess that's my curse.

Meh... I'm in such a bad mood today. Sorry peeps.

Anyway, according to the rules, I'm sure AlexFili can start making a thread now, if he makes a lil more extensive version of his 'demo'.

AlexFili 09-20-2009 11:32 PM

I'll work on it this week. I'll make a thread when the next version is out.
I feel the same way as you Splat. I really love Fan Corner and can't wait to see it alive again. Thanks for helping me out with this thread.

= End of Idea =

Okay, let's have someone else's idea here now :D

STM 09-21-2009 07:25 AM

Sorrrrry Splat and Sorrrrrrrry T-NEx *scuffles foot that was mean but my cat died so I was sad and angry =(

Slig75 09-23-2009 12:22 PM

I have been thinking. once I've completed Dark War, I think i'll do a story in firstperson. I need your views on this. So please say if its a good idea or a bad idea

AlexFili 09-23-2009 11:46 PM

I've often written in first person for certain sections of stories. It can work well if used wisely. On another note, I've been experimenting with 'third person', where none of the main characters speech is revealed in detail (like, A talks to B about blabla... without actually revealing the language).
