Oddworld Mini-Game collection

I'm thinking of making an Oddworld Flash game akin to WarioWare.
Give me some ideas for minigames.

I'm thinking along the lines of this;

- As a Glukkon, balance a lunch tray on your head
- As a Slig, crawl out of your sleeping bag, put on your Slig pants and lock the barracks door so you can laugh at your teammates who are stuck there (it's a practical joke... Sligs have a weird sense of humor)
- As a Mudokon, try to possess a Slig who is running around. You lose if you possess anything else.
- As a Slig, play a quick game of russian roulette and try not to blow your brains out!

Be creative! I'll hear any idea... no matter how insane.

Software Bug 08-18-2009 01:17 AM

Wow that sounds like you're kinda creative, You know a long time ago I owned a Nintendo 64 with Pokemon stadium. It had an "extra" section with (I think) 9 small mini games. You may get some inspiration from that?
Some things I thought off.

* A small race with four mudokons on elum's where one is the player.
* A fleeche where you have climb higher and higher for rising water.

Will come up with more, Sounds intresting, you should give it a shot!

AlexFili 08-18-2009 06:00 AM

Ah yeah, Pokemon Stadium's minigames were classic. My favorite was the Kakuna one.
Perhaps the Fleeches could be licking something? Like Ice Cream?
Maybe playing a drummer-Slig in a marching band as well? :D

MeechMunchie 08-18-2009 06:02 AM

A mudukon in RuptueFarms trying to clean floors while dodging falling meat?

Venks 08-18-2009 06:49 AM

Oh I vastly enjoy making minigames myself. I played WarioWare for a good few days straight and started making some myself. I enjoy the rush of quickly switching from one challenge to the next. Requiring the player to have quick reflexes in order to surpass each minigame. Though I would consider WarioWare games more MicroGames then minigames. Microgames are much easier to create as the player has such a brief time to interact with the microgame. Therefor things don't need to be incredibly polished, but merely appear to work correctly.

I've also learned you can make about 5 of the exact same challenge, but if you present it in a unique way it appears to be a new challenge. Good luck with your minigames.

AlexFili 08-18-2009 08:27 AM

@MeechMunchie: good idea
@Venks: true, but in WarioWare there are tons of these microgames

I'm planning for about 20 different mini/micro games. I'll put the controls on the screen along with the high-score as well. I'll get started right now!

AlexFili 08-18-2009 09:46 AM

Basic demo avaliable now, in SWF format. Use Adobe Flash player or similar.

Note: The graphics now are terrible, they were just something basic so I could get started on the coding.

Software Bug 08-18-2009 11:32 AM

Just downloaded it, I like the second game idea, but what if you made it a bit more a challenge, just add a little more time and one or two "enemy" fleeches trying to eat all your meat :)

The first needs a bit more work before I can get a feel how it will be I'm afraid. :)

Keep up the good work!

AlexFili 08-18-2009 12:03 PM

Enemy fleeches would be good for the harder difficulties. Good idea.

The first game isn't that great... I might just make lots and then delete the worst 50% of the bunch.

I'll try and do a "put the clip in the gun"... a bit like the eye-drops thing in WarioWare.

Oddey 08-18-2009 12:05 PM

Great idea.(I actually had the same idea a while ago.) I'll check out the demo later.

AlexFili 08-18-2009 12:17 PM

Added 3 new microgames;
-Put the clip in the gun.
-Hide from the Slig.
-Play a joke on your Slig bunkmates.

Extra Features;
-Sounds
-Music
-Random Choice (Never play the same game twice in a row!)
-Retry Option

I'm glad you can all test it for me. Thanks.

Added a screenshot for all the unbelievers!

JayDee 08-19-2009 02:06 AM

this is awesome im bit confused with the glukkon one but its good so far

AlexFili 08-19-2009 02:53 AM

Okay, I've thrown away the old code for the Glukkon game. It's now much simpler. I plan to add a simple Elum Hurdles. For some reason I really want to do Sligs riding Scrabs as well, so I'm doing that.

I'm also interested in making minigames based on fanfics. My main ideas for that are things like breaking out of prisons, fighting other creatures and other story-based games.
With permission from the authors, I'd like to include minigames based on; Freedom Fighters, Glory Slig, A Tale of Epidemic Proportions, Military Matters.

Of course I'll probably include a few of my own fanfics characters; Armament, Pack series, Forbidden Tentacle, Path of the Intern, Four Dominions, etc.

Let me know what you think and if you have any ideas.

Added sweeping microgame / Adjusted game difficulty

AlexFili 08-19-2009 03:32 PM

Okay, a few things to let everyone know.
The responses from fanfiction writers here has been overwhelmingly positive. So you can expect at least 3-4 fanfiction based games. (Not including my own!).

I'll try and divide the minigames into 4 themes;

Industrial - Glukkon Balance, Gun Clip, Hidden Mudokon, Slig Wakeup-Call
Native - Fleech Food, Elum Hurdles, Scrab Races
Other Fanfiction - Slippery Soap (Prison based minigame), Train Trax (simple crate puzzle), Defend The Fort / Underwater Adventure (Not sure which yet).
My Fanfiction games

Each 'theme' will include 4-5 games. Hopefully the same number for each theme... for a more balanced game.

As I program more and more games, I'll start adding extra modes such as;
Survival - See how long you can last before losing a minigame

Added two new games to the BETA. Elum Hurdles and Scrab Races. Enjoy!

moxco 08-19-2009 07:56 PM

Nice. They sorta remind me of those anoying 'spank the sumo' or 'drink egnog' ads on the internet.

AlexFili 08-20-2009 01:24 AM

Internet ads... the bane of society, I'll take that as a compliment.

Okay, new version up. This includes a brand new minigames 'Don't Drop the Soap', 'Target Shooting' and also the brand-new SURVIVAL MODE!. Since this will be the main mode of the game, I ask you to try this out a few times to get the hang of it.

As always, if you find a glitch in the game make sure you tell me.

AlexFili 08-21-2009 03:27 AM

Okay, added two new games; 'Hair Cutting' and 'Underwater Battle'.
Almost finished the first BETA of this game. Hope you like this so far.

Note: There is one perculiar bug with the mouse-based stages that I'm trying to fix... mainly the gun clip and quick hide minigames.

Oddey 08-21-2009 05:26 AM

I feel awful saying this. I did not enjoy this in the slightest. The reason? It doesn't really seem to take anything other than rapid mouse clicking. I do wish I could say something positive about it, but nothing really springs to mind.

I feel this is being a little hard on the game, but I really did expect more gameplay and less mouseclicking. I realize this is a beta, but I personally would have liked it to be more like Fusion Frenzy.

My opinion has been stated.

Venks 08-21-2009 05:44 AM

If this were more like Fusion Frenzy then they would be Minigames rather then micro games. Minigames take a lot longer to make.

I personally greatly enjoy these microgames and kept going till I reached a score of 24. Can anyone beat me?

The only two microgames I have trouble with are clip the hair which I seem to barely do in time and put the clip in the gun. Sometimes putting the clip into the gun is easy, but at random times it just doesn't seem to snap into place. /shrug

What I would really like to see that would add more variety to these games is if you had to time your efforts. Like 'Toss the Grenade' or 'Jump the gap'. Where you don't control the player's movement at all, but his action by a simple press of the left mouse button. If you press it too early or too late you mess up.

AlexFili 08-21-2009 07:23 AM

@Oddey: Since you're a friend, I won't shoot you down or anything. The main question here is, do I want to make around 5 serious minigames? Or about 30-40 crazy ones like WarioWare?

While I would love to spend more time on each mini-game, there's only so much someone can do in a short space of time. Oddey, I will make a good Oddworld game in the future, but right now all my efforts are working on this. I do appreciate your comments though, thank you. I'm sorry I couldn't create something that you enjoy Oddey, although maybe you'll prefer the final product.

@Venks: I used to make "Jump the Gap" games a long time ago. In fact, that was one of my first Flash escapades. Toss the Grenade sounds like fun as well.

What you found with the gun-clip minigame is a small glitch whereby... if the mouse cursor is placed over the target area already, the game glitches and the target becomes in-active for whatever reason. I'm trying to fix it, but if I can't... that game might have to be scrapped.

This game is virtually done now. I only need to put one more fanfic based game and then it's done with all the creativity. Right now I'm having a bit of writer's block with my series so I'll probably leave my fanfics out of it for now.

As always, keep in touch and let me know what you think. Once all the games are glitch-tested and debugged... I'll work on improving the graphics little by little.

AlexFili 08-21-2009 07:37 AM

I've put a temporary workaround to fix the bug that people have been having.
For the next version I'll either do a total re-write or just re-write the crappiest games of the bunch.

I'm a bit bored right now so I've made a Scrab shooting minigame.
That brings the total to 13 games now.

Okay, now I'll do a week-long test. I'd like to hear your opinions on every single game and let me know which are the duds of the bunch. Remember, the more you let me know, the more I can help change the game into something special.

joshkrz 08-22-2009 12:17 PM

To record high score you will need a file server and a PHP file to parse the variables sent by Flash and a MYSQL database to store the data.

Seems a bit too much effort for a mini-game, do you have an idea already to store high scores?

AlexFili 08-22-2009 03:00 PM

:| I was thinking of just saving it into the Flash memory... like I always do!

Fuck sake man, all I'm doing is trying to help, I thought you meant a high scores board.

Anyway
, great game, if you would like an UI design I'm free.

Oddey 08-22-2009 11:32 PM

Well, you can't please everyone.:D

Keep working on this though.

AlexFili 08-23-2009 01:26 AM

Josh, you need a Mudokon to tap you on the shoulder and say "Sorry". In other words, please relax. I appreciate your help, but I do not want any aggressive behaviour. If you want to help me that's fine, but please just chill out.

Don't let your emotions control you. You're not some caveman. You are a human being who can choose to ignore your emotions. This is one of those times.

XD I hate text.

It's hard to read a persons emotions with text, I was not angry, just offended at what I thought was a snap at me. :D

Smileys come in useful.

I will be happy to help with the User Interface things, like the menu, HUD, pre-loaders, buttons, icons, any thing of that sort, graphically as you know action script yourself.

Gimme a PM and Ill see what I can do.

AlexFili 08-25-2009 11:51 PM

Okay. Graphically I can probably do a lot myself. What I probably do need are some rough skeches of what things will look like. My main skill with graphical art is digitally going over tracings. If you can maybe do some pencil versions of a couple of basic art assets, I could go over those and draw them in Flash.

For the characters I'm going to have to decide how I want to draw them. I'd rather draw them in a really simple style, rather than have parts rotating and resizing constantly.

Let's start by getting it at least to the standard appearance of a WarioWare game. If someone could try creating a Title Font for Oddworld Party that would be great. I'm going to ask my friend if they can draw some background images for me.

Penciling isn't my thing, but I will do you some UI visuals and ill try out a Oddworld Party Font.

AlexFili 08-31-2009 08:14 AM

Is there anyone else who can help with art assets?

I've added two new games btw; Don't Embarrass Yourself & Get the Drinks In!
