Oddworld Inhabitants; Alive, Dead or Dying?

Who is this Havoc person, you may wonder? He never posts in this area of the forum, let alone open a topic.

Well I do come here from time to time to check on updates on CS and other projects but as of late I have found a whole lot of nothing coming out or being updated. OWI's new website has been coming soon for the last 3 years now if I'm not mistaking and Wikipedia and other sources don't have jack shit to offer either.

So, concretely, what do we currently know about OWI, CS and Lorne? Over the years Lorne has kind of gotten a rep to me of a person who is full of great ideas but never manages to stick to a project long enough for one reason or another. Aside from a little concept art and a logo we know absolutely nothing about Citizen Siege while it has been in 'development' for over 2 years now. Not even as much as a general story hint or anything. We know there's supposed to be a game to accompany the movie, but all we have so far on that is a name. Do we even know who to producer for CS is?

And then there is the hinted Oddworld movie. No disrespect to Lorne here but I sincerely doubt he's working on two movies at once. Or even two projects at once, be it a movie and a game or two games or two movies. Especially in these financial troubling times I doubt OWI would have the resources and investors available to work on two projects at once.

OWI needs to step up and get into the media if they are really doing something worth mentioning. I don't know why Lorne is being so secretive over all this but the projects that haven't been canceled yet are quickly heading to be a second Duke Nukem: Forever. A whole lot of talking and nothing to show for it.

At this point I very much doubt OWI is going to release a movie or even a game ever again. It's been too quiet for too long. The only news we've had for the past year have been speculative articles and mysterious interviews with Lorne which confirm or deny nothing.

Unless we get an official media statement from OWI soon, detailing exactly what their progress is on Citizen Siege and other projects, I'd slowly start getting your hopes down for this ever happening.

Everything seems to be in development hell. Not really anything to add to that, is there? Lorne certainly doesn’t seem to think so. I wouldn’t say they’ll never release anything ever again, but I for one am not getting my hopes for anything to happen soon.

Lorne and Sherry need fans to give up on them like they need a downturn in the economy. As long as they know people will love to see their work again, I don’t foresee them giving up.

moxco 06-04-2009 04:47 PM

I don't know where OWI is getting the finances to support or there employees when their last game was released in '05. And lets face it, Stranger wasn't exactly game of the year.

I'm not saying everyone should abandon them but a little incentive from their side would be welcome. For some reason they think that keeping everyone in the dark is a good thing. And you'd say that if they are attempting to create a big movie production they would want the publicity.

You seem to be living in some fluffy dreamworld where CS is weeks away from release.

CG movies take a ridiculous amount of time to make. Wall-E is a solid example of this. Don't get all pouty because they didn't send a signed letter to you containing the entire film and a bus of hookers or zoo animals or whatever the fuck's wrong with you.

When you're a fan, the incentive is the product. When I first heard about, say, Brutal Legend, I didn't think "HOLY SHIT, I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE PRE ORDER BONUSES, THEM'S KEY CHAINS BE BALLIN'". Man the fuck up.

So, one moment you're saying that they're not doing enough talking and the next you're saying they're doing too much. Make up your mind.

They are not officially dead, if they were, we wouldn't have seen the recent interviews or plans for new projects. OWI is either being quiet or just have no news to tell yet, but they're certainly not dead.

A lot of people have trouble waiting for news. It would be awesome to hear some news from OWI, but it doesn't look like we'll get anything any time soon.

It's in Development Hell. What else is there for them to say about it?

AlexFili 06-05-2009 01:29 AM

I find it hard to believe that we will never again see another Oddworld game see the light of day. I can forsee an Oddworld game being released;

- An official Oddworld game (PS3, X360, Wii)
- A semi-official bonus game (Maybe on PSN, Xbox Arcade, WiiWare, DS, PSP)
- A fanmade game that gets approval and canonified (Flash, Ipod, other)

Otherwise, I could see the following happening;

- Another company buying the rights to all the Oddworld franchise (Microsoft maybe?)
- Another company releasing a very similar idea (but legally different?).

We'll just have to play the waiting game and see what happens.

No I'm not. I'm just wondering why OWI is keeping quiet about everything they do. With most other major movies to the very least you get to know some basic production details. An estimated production length, it's producer, the director, stuff like that. We know nothing about anything and I just don't understand why information like that isn't public knowledge for a project that has been ongoing for the better part of 3 years.

Let me put it this way. The only place where Citizen Siege is an active and known topic is on this forum. Go to any other movie forum, from the biggest to the smallest fan movie forum you can find, and I'll promise you no-one is going to know what the hell you're talking about when you mention Citizen Siege.

As it is now CS could be nothing more then a fan made project, only being interesting for the existing fanbase. While that is no problem for us, it's not the right approuch to PR if you want to have for a multi-million dollar movie which, according to Lorne himself, is supposed to tremble the foundations of the movie AND gaming industry.

Nate 06-05-2009 05:04 AM

You're missing a great many points there, Havoc.

Many films do not have promotion or relevant information published significantly before release. You just don't hear about them because they don't have promotion or relevant information published significantly before release.

We don't even know whether CS is in production. They may well still be in pre-production and I can guarantee you that no other non-sequel CG movie has been promoted or had information released in pre-production. What's more, producers, directors, production length and other information may not have been 100% decided yet so why the hell would they say anything?

Also, it is precisely the right approach for PR for a multi-million dollar movie. Time and money spent now on promoting CS would be wasted if the film is not going to be released for another three or four years. Best to keep quiet and build a buzz when you can actually see the release date on a calendar.

I've known CGI films to go nearly a whole decade before production gets under way. You hear about a Pixar film one, maybe two years before it sees cinematic release. Finding Nemo pre-production began in 1997. Wall-E started way back in 1994! Now that you mention it, I distinctly remember a great many advertising campaigns preparing audiences for film releases up to 15 years later.

I did not know this, but it would seem you are right as usual. It would suck quite a bit if we have to wait another 10 years for this thing though .

ArtemisPanthar 06-05-2009 09:30 AM

In my opinion, it does us no good to be negative. We're fans because we like what they produce, we're not fans because we think we deserve something. Years from now we'll likely still like Oddworld (even if its a distant memory) regardless of whether or not CS ever released or another Oddworld game is made. We've been told CS is going to be made, and I'm content being excited over the possibility. Yes, it will suck if it takes a very long time or is never made, but that doesn't matter. I don't know what's going to happen and it makes me happier to be optimistic. I lose nothing for hoping for what I want, except some tiny disappointment. Its a movie, I can handle that disappointment. By thinking negatively, however, one misses out on the excitement and anticipation of the potential release. I like that feeling and choose to feel it.
Hell, I thought Oddworld Inhabitants was dead up until I joined this forum. So even distant projects are better than that.

Giving too much information too early gets ones hopes up prematurely, however. Production of such a big project is highly variable and things are likely to change over time. Personally, I'd rather wait to be told when they know what's going on, then to be jerked around with half-reports that end up changing.
Anything else I have to say will echo others and I don't want to pile on. I do want to emphasize just how long it takes to make a -good- CG movie.

Most people aren't aware of a film until the week when it's released, when they spam the trailers.

I was going to say something mean, but I bet a few people have fallen for this without posting.

posrep.

STM 06-07-2009 12:38 PM

I really love the oddworld chronicles so I delved around and little old ScrabTrapman with only 1 rep to his name found something!!! The CS movie is apparent to be coming out 2009 (this year) but it isnt, its coming out 2010-11.

Lorne for one reason cant afford to keep up big projects but hes bringing out either one or two online game called wage wars

Slowly, the Oddworld website is closing down, first it was just the fan club but with no new site being registered and now a few pictures being removed, the website is slowly being deleted which means, he could either be making way for the new or getting old

Dont expect to hear much for a year if anything but try to find what you can.

REP ME! lol jokz u dont have 2

Mac Sirloin 06-07-2009 01:33 PM

Lorne is like an amoeba.

Citizen Siege will take as long as it take. Doesn't matter how long that is, as long as people post on this forum, Lorne still has fans, and they are still waiting...
