Half-Life 2

Some say its the best Video game ever created!
(and If theres already been a thread about Half-life i'm sorry i didn't know)

Anyway I'm new to Half-life 2, and its amazing! What do you think of it? :fuzconf:

Daxter King 05-19-2009 02:15 PM

I found it dull, any driving section was horrid, and the action was not that good. I love Episode 2 though.

Disgruntled Intern 05-19-2009 08:21 PM

I'll say what I always say:

It fucking sucks. The "hey, look, we have physics" puzzles that you have to deal with every fifteen minutes are boring, crude, and redundant. Also, the story is shit.

Luskan 05-20-2009 11:23 AM

I've got the orange box, and i really enjoyed it. I'd been meaning to get Half-Life for a while, and i think it's a fantastic game. I pretty much disagree with what everything that Daxter King and Disgrunted Intern think, no hard feelings :)

dripik 05-20-2009 11:35 AM

I found it alright, though I agree with DI and Daxter on some points. I liked the physics, the puzzles were enjoyable (with rather obvious solutions).

The story wasn't much. A) "Hey, thanks for coming, Gordon. We have some problems at... um, some kilometres ahead. Go there and help them out. Oh, you can have the car, it has an ammo box on the back. Cool, huh?" B) "Gordon, you made it! We got problems not too far from here, but you should take the car. And watch out for those creatures coming up from the ground."... And so on. This is how it goes most of the time. The driving part was fun at first, but got way too long.

And finally: what plot starts with a pet Headcrab messing up a teleportation?!

Overall, it was good, but the first one was way more epic.

Havoc 05-20-2009 11:46 AM

I've always thought the general storyline of Half-Life is pretty cool, along with the universe Valve created for it. However I agree that in terms of gameplay it's often a matter of "go there, solve that, then go there, solve that". 'Chapter' like moments (like where you just killed 200 combine soldiers after which you have to wait for someone else to open the door for you to proceed) were very much present in HL2. They did a better job of masking them in the two episodes though.

My cousin gave me a couple of X360 demo discs, and I there was this demo of Episode 2 on it. I played it and really liked it, I hope to get Orange Box soon.

Hell is a world were all plots start that way. Because if everything is awesome, nothing is.

mr.odd 05-20-2009 01:47 PM

It's a pretty awsome game i think. but i have to agree with dripik, the first one was way better.

Crashpunk 05-21-2009 08:31 AM

I only have the demo and it amazing, Whos got Garry's Mod?

Disgruntled Intern 05-21-2009 08:59 PM

I loved Half-Life 2. It's one of the best games I've ever had the opportunity to play. I am not much of an FPS fan; this was the first FPS I ever played, and if it was all about shooting-- no matter how good-- I probably wouldn't enjoy it. (Go ahead and attribute it to me being a girl as that probably is the case.) A lot of the experience for me was in the puzzles and the universe. The creatures are awesome and I loved helping the rebels out. I did play the original Half-Life after playing Half-Life 2 and I didn't enjoy it as much. I'm sure it is a great game but it was lacking in the elements that made HL2 "tolerable" to me-- the same elements which appear to annoy others.

I completely agree that HL2 had some awful pacing involved. The episodes were short but the action was much better paced. Does anyone remember that part where you had to climb underneath this bridge from one end to the other, and back? I don't remember the driving parts as long or dull, but I hate them anyway because the only driving I can do is in zigzags or circles.

Episode 2 is definitely my favorite. That strider battle at the end was just epic and is one of my FAVORITE maps to play co-op.

I'm actually working on some Half-Life 2 related costumes at the moment. I'm dressing my little brother up as a zombie and I'm throwing together rebel getup for myself. I have pictures if you're interested but I think that kind of thing belongs in the art section.

The bridge! How could I forget The Bridge!

When I first saw the place, I thought that the force field could be turned off at the same end of the bridge, but then I saw there was nothing there, except a door which lead to the pillars and girders. Wasn't happy. Especially on the way back. Shooting down the enemy aircraft from between those girders felt good though...

I think it was an awesome game with lots of variation and different things to do... I loved every part of it.

Laser 05-26-2009 04:22 AM

I thought it was amazing...for 2004.

But the cracks are starting to show but it is still a damn good game

Crashpunk 05-26-2009 08:41 AM

Console hacking anyone?

Man its great fun to mess things up.

I advise you not to buy The Orange Box, as Portal sounds like your worst nightmare. I'm not the greatest fan of HL2, but the engine I very much like, yes sir. TF2 is our new God.

Crashpunk 05-26-2009 12:12 PM

I'm getting the orange box tommorow :D

Mac Sirloin 05-26-2009 07:55 PM

The Crossbow was the best part.

dripik 05-26-2009 10:57 PM

You mean the part where a heated iron rod enters a Combine soldier's skull, nailing him to the cliffside, solely for the entertainment of the player and the rest of the Combine forces in the immediate area?

Yes, fun times. You had to be tricky at long range though, the Combine tend to strafe out of the way. That's why I use the Magnum in such situations.

I've got HL2 on Steam, and I always give the Crossbow infinite ammo rapid fire. The noise repeating itself is glorious.

I had this a little while ago on the 360, after my mate reccomended it. I enjoyed it very much, and portal is very addictive. At first i didn't know whether to get it or not due to the fact that i have not played the first game, but i read the plot somewhere and enjoyed the game alot after.

mr.odd 06-08-2009 01:02 PM

my favorite level is the one where you control an army of antlions

Crashpunk 06-27-2009 12:02 PM

I just did Ravenholm. is a joke, really its THAT easy!

A bit predictable at certain places, yeah. I don't know, it gave me a challenge. Took me some time to find my way out of the streets where the zombies are coming infinitely.

Since there are absolutely no other areas like that in the game I assumed that I was supposed to withstand the assault and kill them all before I could move on. Boy, was that stupid.
