RPG question

I was planning on making an oddworld RPG, but unfortunately i have no idea how..... does anyone know of any programs i could do this with?

Bullet Magnet 05-02-2009 10:07 PM

Hardcode it.

Xavier 05-02-2009 11:35 PM

like BM said...

I'm moving this

You could use RPG Maker 2000/2K3/XP/VX. If you do decide to make it, please make it good.

Fuzzle Guy 05-03-2009 02:16 AM

You might want to check out the Oddworld MMOSG. It's not an RPG but it can be used for it.

AlexFili 05-03-2009 04:59 AM

For noobs theres Game Maker and RPG Maker. For the more advanced programmers, I would recommend Adobe Flash or C++. It depends how detailed and customizable you want it.

bobtheguy 05-03-2009 12:13 PM

@Jordan
does it require much skill to make something in RPG Maker 2000/2K3/XP/VX , because i don't know much about programming....
also I was planning on making a chat room where you can chat with other players, trade money, weapons and items... anyone know how to do this?

T-nex 05-03-2009 12:32 PM

You can plan to make alot of things.. But if you have no knowledge or skills, you can forget everything about it.

I suggest actually looking into it.. Like try at least to google: 'How to make games for beginners' Or something like that.
Without even a basic understanding of how games work, you wont get very far. Unless of course you have people you could entrust the coding-tasks to.
Then again, there are programs that allow you to make games in easier ways than other. Likes Flash or RPG Maker.

I don't know much about the code part in games myself, as that's not what interests me, so I can't provide you with any useful suggestions, but I do with you luck with your project.

It doesn't require much in the way of skills, and is perfect for you if you want to learn a bit. Google RMXP and download the latest version at RMXP's site. Try it out, fiddling around with things. If you have any doubts about how something works in it you can PM me if you want.

It's fairly easy to work with, the database is great for making basically anything, such as weapons, items, skills/spells and characters. The only thing that's remotely complicated is the scripting, but even then you only have to copy and paste things into the script. Only the really powerful scripts ask you to do more. Not sure about the chatroom thing though. Did you mean you wanted to do a MMORPG? 'Cuz I'm not sure whether you can do one in RPG Maker.

why the odd are there 3 of these threads? Mods, clean up in zulag two...

Carnix 05-04-2009 04:00 AM

My preferred two programs for an RPG would be GameMaker7 or MacomediaFlash. Both can do damn good RPGs if you have the know-how. If you don't have the know-how then stop trying to do something you havn't got a clue with.
Although If you mean MMOrpg I suggest this: http://www.freemmorpgmaker.com/index.php
If I only had a server to host on I'd have made something on it by now.

AlexFili 05-04-2009 05:03 AM

I think you mean Adobe Flash (they took over Macromedia). I use it quite a bit.

Same program different versions. I use macromedia and have extensive enough knowledge to make games with it. I however don't have the time or inspiration...

AlexFili 05-04-2009 07:11 AM

I'm still using ActionScript 2.0, I prefer that style of coding, where every object has its own pieces of code associated with it. Never liked that object-orientated style coding.

bobtheguy 05-04-2009 04:27 PM

Yeah, I guess I kinda said the wrong thing, what I meant was MMORPG. However the MMORPG would not have that much multiplayer interaction, it would only have that small chat room I was talking about, and maybe an arena, were players could battle with each other. I may make some maps of it and post them on here. But there's no garauntee that I can make the MMORPG, since no one I know knows much about programming MMORPG's. By the way if anyone here is good at programming, and wants to partner with me on making this MMORPG, please PM me, or just post it on this thread.

bobtheguy 05-05-2009 01:53 PM

This isn't a map, but it's a description of some of the places and shops.
SLIG BARRACKS- this includes-
.
-Vykkers Pet Shop- Here you can buy pets to help you
The pets here are slogs paramites scrabs elums fleeches and almost all the other animals from oddworld.also all of the dangerous ones (such as paramites scrabs and fleeches) will not hurt you, they will only hurt your enemys
.
-Stadium- here you can fight in a 2-player match, fight against cpus, or watch other people fight and maybe bet money on who will win.
.
-Chat Room- chat and trade with your friends here
.
-The Sligorium Emporium- buy guns and weapons here
.
-Drink Machine- buy drinks here
.
-Save Machine- save your game here
.
-Health Machine- replenish your health here
-these are just some things in the game, there are many more, but i'm in a hurry, i'll post more later, by the way i'm still looking 4 some programmers......

bobtheguy 05-06-2009 05:10 PM

HI EVERYONE, plz. check out the programmers thread I made called, oddworld MMORPG programmers needed , PLEASE, if u are a programmer, or know a programmer, plz. go there and read what I said.

Splat 05-07-2009 04:22 AM

Ladies and gentlemen, due to a frankly bizarre glitch at the hands of ezboards, three duplicate versions of this thread when it was moved out of wherever it was that Bob posted it before.

I've merged them and cleaned it up a little, though if you're surprised by the sudden appearance of posts that weren't there before, now you know why.

MMORPGs are tricky things. To be honest it will take you a long time to make and it will take a longer time to maintain it. Unless you are 100% commited to it and will promise to regularly update it, I really think you should aim your sights a little lower. Why not try a normal RPG first?

I agree. It seems that you are attempting to create something you have no knowledge of creating. I'm sorry but no-one is going to make your games for you, start with something you can handle alone.

AlexFili 05-07-2009 07:24 AM

They will do what they want regardless of your input and you are subject to their laziness/boredom. Unless you have a really good programming friend, they are likely to ditch the idea in favour of something different eventually.

My advice is to go back to the drawing board, think about what you REALLY want... and then think about how you would achieve that goal. There are some good tools you can use to accomplish this.

joshkrz 05-20-2009 09:22 AM

an online rpg in adobe flash, i wouldnt know where to start, i would like to know though :D

Carnix 05-20-2009 10:42 PM

If you knew you had the knowledge or the time and brains to learn how to utilise Flash in such a way you'd start with your idea. Drawing up game-play, characters and plot. Map out what you want to do so you're not making it up as you go.

If you don't have the knowledge or the time and brains to learn, you'd start by giving up your dreams and try something simpler.:p

well the only thing i would have problems with would be the AS to code how multiple online players would interact. That might be a very useful thing to learn though...
