What does Abe see when he chants?

Here's an obscure thought. What do you think Abe sees when he chants? I'll draw a picture of this at some point, but I think he sees into a sort of psychic otherworld, where solid objects are like fog, and minds and souls glow like beacons.

Oh, and no-one say 'the inside of his eyelids'.
Dammit. Now everyone's going to say that.

moxco 04-29-2009 11:48 PM

Probably through the eyes of whoever he is possessing.

Phylum 04-30-2009 01:29 AM

The insides of his eyelids :P

Either something really trippy, or (probably) what Moxco said.

AlexFili 04-30-2009 05:16 AM

I'd imagine that he would see whatever the possession orb could see. Like in MO, it follows it around.

It would be interesting in a next-gen Oddworld game if Slig visors made the screen glow a tint of red when you possessed them :D

Wil 04-30-2009 05:45 AM

I think he senses rather than sees.

AlexFili 04-30-2009 05:55 AM

That reminds me, how do you think that Paramites and Scrabs picture the world? Sonar style? or DareDevil style?

Xavier 04-30-2009 06:10 AM

When he is in another body I think he sees what that creature sees...

Otherwise I don't really know

Probably through the eyes of whoever he is possessing.

I mean between when he's concious and when he's posessed something, so like when the blue twinkles are reaching out.

MA 04-30-2009 07:55 AM

i agree with Max. after all, its a sort of 'psychic' power.

Grandi 04-30-2009 07:58 AM

He sees the source code of the game and the class where all sligs are made from. Everything is public, so he has instant access to handle those noobs.

Xavier 04-30-2009 08:10 AM

Abe isn't really Neo :p

I think the shadow world with light spots sounds pretty nice even if it has been done before.

I'd assume he sees himself rushing towards his possession target as the blue stuff.

Crashpunk 04-30-2009 10:12 AM

This is a weird question. Sorta like the question who is Gman?
Anyway...
I think when he chants, he closes his eyes sees everything slowly going blue. Then when he opens his eyes again, hes in a Slig or a Scrabs body.

What would he see when he unpossesses a Slig?

Blood

Blood
A lot of it.

I smeared up a psych-ified version of an AO screenshot.

mr.odd 05-01-2009 06:55 PM

I’m guessing he sees what we see, everything in 2D.

AlexFili 05-02-2009 12:22 AM

You can't see in 2D. To him the world is in 3D like in the FMVs and MO.

Phylum 05-02-2009 01:45 AM

Really? I thought the floors of Rupture Farms were only a pixel wide?

Also, it's hard to see out of the eyes of something that doesn't have eyes

Xavier 05-02-2009 02:19 AM

Yet, a bat can "see" with his sonar...

AlexFili 05-02-2009 02:19 AM

With Scrabs/Paramites I think he would see something akin to what Daredevil sees, where theres like pulses that you can see and react to.

What I'm saying is, it's impossible to see in 2D. It would just be a single line of vision, which would be useless.

MeechMunchie 05-02-2009 05:27 AM

The environments in AO/AE were 3D, we just see them from the side. (Note to self: Stop using pictures to explain everything.)

drag0nbane442 05-02-2009 08:38 AM

Scrabs and paramites can see, this is why invisibility works. Just because you can't see their eyes, doesn't mean they don't have them.

Wings of Fire 05-02-2009 08:45 AM

I find the idea that Abe sees everything as it exists outside the cave quite endearing.

Why should ascending to a higher plane of existence inhibit his vision in any way?

Thats what i was saying, he sees everything from the side(2D) like we do.

Wil 05-02-2009 10:23 AM

Judging by the appearance of these side views on screens in FMVs, these are images recorded by factory CCTV. And, uh, abandoned temple CCTV. That Abe can tap into their signals while his consciousness is floating ethereally about makes a kind of sense.

WoF, I wouldn’t describe Abe’s going-into-possession state as an ascension to a higher plane of existence. He’s still confined to the physical world rather than the spiritual world, just in a spiritual form.

Wings of Fire 05-05-2009 11:25 AM

That's kind of what I meant :p but couldn't seeing the world in a spiritual form give him a (possibly) restricted view of the spiritual world?

Bullet Magnet 05-05-2009 12:21 PM

I should think that in a spiritual form he'd be blind, on account of having no eyes. We'd know if he could see with light, at any rate, because the equivalent of his retinas would cast a shadow as visible light is absorbed.

As for seeing outside of the cave, surely that must make navigation exceedingly difficult. We need perception filters to remove superfluous information, or we'd be overwhelmed and unable to perceive anything. Imagine waking up one morning and seeing things as they really are: mostly empty space, with no colour or shade.

joshkrz 05-19-2009 10:13 AM

but what about when he posseses bells? im too tired to get confused

Crashpunk 05-19-2009 11:38 AM

Bells?
