Abe's Oddysee on PC, glitch or not?

Hello!

Have this trivial question but every time the spawn point changes it's indicated by a square floating above Abe's head, see pictures:

It's quite useful to see that ok, the game got saved now or when doing some trickier multi part task you don't have to do it all at one go but you can go and walk back or forward in the middle of it to the previous or next spawn point(because thank's to this floating square you know exactly where they are) to save current progress.

I'm asking this because you don't see it on the PSX version and I'd think if they wanted you to see it they would have chosen something visually more appealing.

So is it just a glitch from playing Win95 game on WinXP that you're not suppose to actually see?

I doubt it. I get that if I play it on my old 95 machine.

And welcome to the forums.

Yes welcome, try not to be scared by OddjobAbe he's a reeaall softie.

But yes I get it when I play on my Vista PC so it must have been left out somehow for the Playstation version.

It's not a bug; it's meant to happen. But if it's different to the PS version, it was added for the PC because the PS was the original.

The PS version doesn't have the save boxes... however, I think when you walk back to that particular area, it will save your progress again, so if you save some mudokons and go to that save point again, it'll record that you saved the muds. Not sure about the PC version on this.

In the PC version you can't go to the same savepoint twice in a row; the second time it won't save. You have to go to a different savepoint and then return to the original one if you want to resave there.

Actually I think it might be the same in the PSX version, but its harder since theres no 'confirmation box' as in the PC one.

Alright, thanks.

Weird choice then, doesn't really fit with the rest of the game.

The savepoint should of been a Abe face instead of a Diamond

AlexFili 04-14-2009 09:45 AM

To be fair, the mudokon cartoon face didn't really become memorable until Exoddus was made.

Crashpunk 04-14-2009 09:49 AM

Thats true, but each time the diamond appears i think of Inf Bombs.

If you have a slower computer, the mudokon cartoon face appears when the game pauses to load an FMV or a new level. So it probably would have worked if they'd used it for savepoints. I suspect that they chose the diamond shape so as to be as unobtrusive as possible.

The cartoon face does appear a lot in Oddysee to be true, but it doesn't hit full stride until Exoddus. It's just a shame theres no cartoon face of a Slig anywhere :(

Because Exoddus introduces emotions, the smiley face really comes into its full stride.
Personally I think the diamond would be better, because seeing a floating face would be odd.

How many games have save points with floating heads over them?

alf's brother's mate 04-15-2009 12:56 AM

The face is somewhere on every secret area on both AE and AO, so I think it still should have played a bigger part in the first game.

I think that it should have assisted you in the boardroom level. It'd be like Evil Otto from Frenzy, only nice. Then it'd have got the attention it deserved.
