PS3 warranty concern.

Hello Oddworld Forums, I recently purchased a 60GB PS3 used for $430 USD. The reason I bought this instead of a new 80GB model is because I didn't want to keep my old PS2 but there are still PS2 games I want to play so backwards compatibility was a must! I'm enjoying it very much and I haven't had a single problem with it yet, but it is used and I only have a 30 day warranty, that's what's worrying me so can anyone offer me some advice to help me take care of my PS3 properly I've never had a game console fail on me before but I don't know why the person who had the system before me traded it in or what he did to it. But I mean it got past two years without problems I assume so what can be wrong with it? :fuzconf:

Erm. You're probably better off asking in a PS3 forum. Or a forum for a game on PS3.

Welcome to the OWF anyway.

I think most of us have 360's here so i dont know what to suggest.

btw welcome to the forum.

I think you are the only one of us to own a PS3. I personally won't buy it until they release a new game in the Ico series.

Hazel-Rah 12-29-2008 02:00 PM

I always wanted to play Ico, I could've picked it up for $10 at one point! Now the game appears to have appreciated in value, I heard it tanked when it was in stores, I missed out! :p

360 has more games, PS3 is more or less suited for an HDTV, it's a really good system PSN is free and MGS4 is really awesome! Though 360 usually gets more exclusives and killer apps. Both systems are about the same in the visual department. Though 360 accessories tend to be a little cheaper, they're both good systems with their own pros and cons.

Thanks for the recommendation Fuzzle King that'll be a good place to ask, I think the general rules apply when taking care of game systems though. I have a microfiber cloth which works really well for removing dust from the surface, sometimes I vacuum out the vents, and I make sure it has plenty of space around it because PS3 gets really hot!

Fuzzle King 12-29-2008 02:13 PM

no problem.

My 360 gets pretty hot too,to the point where i got the two red lights a couple of times (thats for overheating, not the 3 red ring of death, although it has survived the ring of death twice before somehow!).
I gave 'ol microsoft a ring and said it would be be £65 for a replacement.so i said no thank you,and instead blasted all the dust out of it,bought a cheap cooling fan and gave it a bit more space next to my TV.so far,no problem.saved me a bit of dosh anyway.

Hazel-Rah 12-31-2008 10:41 AM

Oh yes the 3 red rings of death, I've read all about it. That's very resourcful of you to attempt to fix your own 360 and succeedn I'm actually trying to read up as mush as possible on what kind of problems are to be taken seriously and what you could do about them. Not to sound like a fanboy or anything but the PS3 has a seriously low failure rate to begin with so you don't hear about them breaking nearly as often which offers me some peace of mind! ;)

Honestly the whole RROD situation is one of the main reasons I picked PS3 instead, but a lot of people don't take proper care of their games so could it just be negligence? There are some 360 games I would totally pick up a 360 for I'm just kind of afraid to, the only problem with it is the failure rate. :fuzmad:

I wish I knew somebody who owned a 360 so I didn't have to buy one lol, I only know one person who plays video-games and she owns a Wii and hates it for some reason, I bought her Animal Crossing for us to play but she still hasn't even opened it since Christmas lol. :D

OANST 12-31-2008 11:56 AM

I've had my 360 for a while and haven't had any problems with it. I just make sure that I don't play it for too long without stopping. The main failure problems seem to be with overheating.

Zerox 12-31-2008 12:16 PM

Watership down ftw.

You shouldn't need to take any special care of your PS3 in particular, our PS2 is still in working order and we've done nothing to it short of just generally being careful. But I think those newer consoles may be more sensitive, so more attention to heating might be necessary, and making sure it's in a safe, stable position so it's unlikely to be knocked, fall over or anything of the sort.

Our 360 was second hand, and has also been quite fine. The failure rate might not necessarily be a fault of the console, it might be more sensitive (so I'm betting the PS3 is more sturdy), but otherwise possibly not much. I'm willing to bet a high proportion of those failure rates was negligence and as has been said, overheating. I had no idea red rings appeared on it when it got too hot O.o Ours has never done that, despite playing for about maybe 10 hours or something retarded in one go? But yes, perhaps not playing for too long in one period is advisable with the PS3 too if you are safety conscious, though playing it so long something happens is unlikely.

I doubt it's anything you need to worry about.

I don't know the exact structure or the PS3, but you gotta keep ANY Air vents exposed. Don't let anything get blocked, even if it means raising it off the floor with a book.

Otherwise, just avoid letting it get dusty and you should be fine.

OANST 01-10-2009 07:24 PM

Well, it happened. It fucking happened. I've been red ringed.

Hazel-Rah 01-11-2009 12:05 AM

Oh damn OANST, are you still under warranty?? Man I am so sorry to hear about your loss I know the feeling.

Actually i had my first scare with my PS3 and the warranty is almost up so i was frantic to find an answer all i did really was change the video settings and nothing was coming up on my tv i thought i'd ruined my ps3 but i learned about factory reset and was fine but in the process i shut my ps3 on and off like 6 times now i feel like a complete idiot! i even shut it off using the back switch while the system was on i thought for sure i'd lose data but it's alright i'm not turning my console on today to make up for it.

But OANST man, my condolences I would let Microsoft customer service have it for this one.

As a last resort you could always buy another 360 and return your old system in its place, it's not honest and it's probably detrimental to the retailer but if manufacturers are going to keep robbing us like this then they have it coming.

Fuzzle King 01-11-2009 04:57 AM

He should be under warranty, because they added a 3 year warranty to cover the red ring of death problem.

My friend Jordan's 360 red ringed and still works fine. We were watching X-files, I was half a sleep and he was like "Oh fuck."

Some cream from the pharmacy might help.

I had this once, apparently there are different types of red rings. These ones weren't the dreaded RRoD, but three red rings when there is a problem with the 360's power source (power surge, shit like that). You can tell the difference between the red ring failures because the 3 lights are in different locations (can't remember off of the top of my head, but one is all but the bottom left are red, other is all but the bottom right etc)

I've been very sick and didn't bother to submit my request until today. Therefor, It will still be a bit of a wait before I am online berating Kastere about his schooling situation. In the meantime, enjoy the peace and quiet.

Hazel-Rah 01-19-2009 11:34 AM

I was wondering do you guys think this is enough space for my ps3 to breath?

Notice I moved the cable box back to give it more space to breath on the side

Hobo 01-19-2009 02:03 PM

Looks fine to me. I think you're worrying too much.

Fuzzle King 01-20-2009 10:27 AM

OANST 01-21-2009 07:27 AM

I sent my 360 off to Microsoft yesterday. Hopefully it will return soon.
