The Age of Empires Series (including Age of Mythology)

I frequently play AoK, Aom and AoE3 though I'd have to say AoM is my favourite. If anyone plays ESO please tell me.

EDIT: I treid to add a poll but I was to slow and the stupid 5 minuet rule came to effect.

Wings of Fire 11-30-2008 06:08 PM

Where is your point of contention here?

moxco 11-30-2008 09:26 PM

I was wondering who plays them?

Phylum 11-30-2008 11:12 PM

I play them!

AOM is by far the best, but not without the titans expansion. That turns it from a good game to a great game.

Wings of Fire 12-01-2008 04:41 AM

The titan turns it from a good game into an arms race -_-, there is nothing on any armies side that can feasibly stand against a titan so whoever creates theirs first nearly always wins.

I was and am still very much in love with the story modes from Age of Mythology and Age of Kings, especially the Saracen campaign.

Laser 12-01-2008 07:44 AM

Arn't most RTS' basically arms races?

But yes, I love AoM!

moxco 12-01-2008 11:21 AM

I actually downloaded a mod for the titans that disables titans.

Phylum 12-04-2008 11:00 PM

Downloaded a mod for an expansion called the titans to disable titans.

The best part of titans is to let the computer build a titan and then try to kill it without building one yourself.

And I have to agree with laser, but can anyone name one good RTS that isn't an arms race? Red Alert and Dark Reign are great fun, but quite often end up as a 'my tanks bigger than yours' competition.

Sorry :P I used the wrong term, what I meant is that with the exception of before WW1 and just after WW2 wars are not won by one 'tank'.

I love the whole series.(Except AoE3)

I can't place Age of Kings over Age of Mythology and vice versa, as they are my favourites. The only ones I can really set in place are Age of empires three and one. One is definately superior over the third. Why? Because Age of Empires three attempts to cram a whole bunch of stuff together in an on-top-of-the-other sort of way. Age of Empires one has many features carefulley placed into the game to cause no pointless infuriation. In a nutshell 3 has too much stuff that either overpowers or is just pointless. Age of empires has technologies that can be essential to worthwhile. Everything gives you a good boost if you use it right. Unless it's just because I'm just so bad with the third installment. Proprably because of it's graphics and home city thing.

I play AoK mostly for the fun of attempting new strategies. AoM keeps bringing me back for the editor and other people's custom maps.

As a response to Wings of Fire, I say that a load of Hersirs stand a chance if they keep coming. Egyptian preists may put up a good fight, if you've made all possible upgrades for them. For Greek there's very little hope unless you have some very tough god powers in your arsenal and every hero. Atlanteans can stand up to a titan reasonably well with a tons of hero archers. But the best way of all to win against one is to simply make sure it never gets done.:D Just my tips. Not that they're good.

magic9mushroom 12-15-2008 03:02 AM

I play two and one occasionally, but three is retarded. Two is my favourite because it's a much more forgiving game than the first.

Mythology I don't like, though.

Incognito 12-16-2008 09:35 AM

I remember back in the day, just before my GCSE exams all I would ever do was play this game (AoE I). Man did I know how to procrastinate :D. But seriously I was hooked to this game; it somehow manages to take over your life. For some reason though I never played two and three or mythology (and probably for the best - otherwise I wouldn't see the light of day!). I'll check them out one day - probably not soon, but one day when I have more time again.

Two is one with more resources and easier trade, as well as better graphics.

Three is two with an inbuilt Unfairness Factor and no stone. They also went down the all-too-familiar route of nerfing the shit out of defenses (walls and towers) so they're as crap as SC or C&C defenses. Seriously, there are cannons in AOE3 that will blow large sections of wall in one hit.

Don't bother with three. And it probrably is for the best that you stay away or you'll be spending a long time playing these games.

skrew guns! they cheapen life!

swords and bows and arrows ftw! AOE2

Ha, you fail at spelling.

And Mythology is dumb. Seriously, three races?

(I know this was posted a while ago, but this only happened recently)

Ha! My cousin and I ware playing 2 onto 6(him & me onto 6 computers) and I had a titan killed :p(by an army of 70-something troops). We lost.

Three unique races.

Three unique races.

Then play SC or WC3. Or C&C for that matter.

Hobo 01-07-2009 08:00 AM

Then why the fuck are you complaining about it?

Do you have severe mental issues?

magic9mushroom 01-11-2009 01:42 PM

What do you mean, "why am I complaining"?

Strike Witch 01-11-2009 04:06 PM

3 races is always good.

Especially when one of them is Alien Bugs.

Alien Bugs are always fun.

Wings of Fire 01-11-2009 05:22 PM

I'll take your three unique races and raise you some Atlanteans, we now have four almost unique races.

Show me one thing other than Warcraft 3 which can top that.

Strike Witch 01-11-2009 06:53 PM

Dawn Of War has like, 9 races?

Wings of Fire 01-11-2009 06:56 PM

And one of the main criticisms of the series is they're too fucking samey.

Strike Witch 01-11-2009 08:41 PM

They're not to me.

Then again, I played the tabletop game.
