Hey! Art!

So I know we have a forum dedicated to the creation of art, but how about those people who just enjoy these things? What does OWF think about visual mediums, that's what I want to know!

Anyone from Van Gogh to Monet to Richter to Warhol... contemporary artists too! Say your words!

A few of my recent interests involve a couple of girls named Lauren Albert and Audrey Kawasaki. The former does these eerie disturbing drawings and paintings, a lot of figural stuff involving naked chicks and abrasive colors. She's awesome, lives in Philly and shows across the country I believe. Also, she just graduated last year, which is actually really intimidating for prospective artists (me). But yeah, she's awesome. Oh, also, she has some of the best Pokemon fanart I've ever seen. And her traditional stuff is better than the digital.

The other girl is well on her ways to fame, does similarly figural work, a lot with the female nude. A lot of her shit is erotic, and she is one of the most skilled draftsmen I've seen in a long time. Beautiful lines, beautiful colors, beautiful drawings. I think she's L.A. based, although she went to my school for a couple of years before deciding to break away from the New York art scene (it's "too conceptual"). Def check her out. Also, Leto, there's a few drawings with sloths in her archives...

So, how bout ya'lls?

I like the second person a lot.

I'm not really familiar with too many artists. Occasionally I find a gallery I really like on DA, and sometimes I just like browsing Raymond Swanland's site.

Kimon 10-26-2008 12:12 PM

Yeah, Ray's stuff is excellent, but he doesn't update nearly enough for me to go there too often. I got my fill about a year ago I think.

Leto 10-26-2008 12:46 PM

Gottfried Helnwein is a recent favourite of mine. gross depictions of things ftw.

Kimon 10-26-2008 12:58 PM

Wowly shit! That guy's got some superman skills. His shit is pretty disturbing, especially the watercolors. I like his Irish landscapes a lot though.

Anthony S. Waters is great, and I have the regular privilege of short chats about his work with him via his DeviantART page.

OANST 10-27-2008 08:55 AM

I'm a fan of Joseph Smigielski (I'll look for a link later). Sort of abstract. I actually own four originals. Not prints.

Wings of Fire 10-27-2008 01:33 PM

I don't know many contemporary artists =( which is unfortunate, people I regularly admire the work of would be Matriar and Alector on deviantArt, as well as Paul Kidby (Who at least Nate and BM will recognise, I have the artbook 8D) and Mike Waters.

If we're talking more classical then I love the works of Salvador Dali and other surrealists.

OANST 10-27-2008 01:57 PM

Found it.

Holy shit OANST, those are cool as hell! Abstract and illustrative, TRES BEAUTIFUL! Is he a Detroit local?

Xavier 10-27-2008 11:42 PM

The links you guys posted are quite interesting, thanks for sharing, even if I already knew a couple of them.
I'll post a list of my favorite artists later, when I've access to my bookmarks.

Yes, but he moved to Chicago a few years ago. I actually have five of his originals, not four. I forgot about the one in my daughter's room.

Nate 10-29-2008 02:26 AM

That stuff is cool. Very Kandinsky-esque, at least in terms of his use of colour.

Dave Pressler

My Pet Skeleton

Greg 'Craola' Simkins

Jon Wayshak

Fuck Picasso and Warhol, though.

Kimon 11-02-2008 08:30 PM

Damn, Dave Pressler is cool as hell. The others are skilled too, a little too gothy-angry for me though. Still, it's snazzy shit. PS Picasso is the man! I fucking love Cubism. Warhol's a pioneer, but I don't know enough about him to really judge.

SO there's this chick by the name of Aurel Schmidt who is kicking in my face with her talent. I went to a show of hers called "Man Eater" and it's just these ridiculous drawn assemblages of dildos, cigarettes, bags of weed, joints, cocaine and straws, blood, bones, makeup, food, pigeons, insects, rats, vaginas and condoms thrown all over the place, and they are all fucking BEAUTIFULLY drawn. It's basically a giant middle finger to Modernist art, and anything done in the name of "progress".

Plus, she's only 25 and self-taught. I might as well give up right now.

Unfortunately, here website sort of sucks, but it has a few cool things on it. Check 'er out.

@Aurel Schmidt: WHY ARE PEOPLE SO TALENTED?

Kimon 11-07-2008 11:23 AM

I know I know!! I'm actually planning on taking a recent drawing and burning out the eyes with a cigarette, a la her style. Which reminds me, I haven't posted up any art in a longish time.

OI! Recently discovered that Ralph Steadman (famed illustrator of Hunter S. Thompson's exploits), has some great fucking paintings other than those ones. Whee!!

Here's his shit. If you know Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas well, you know this guys work.

"William Burroughs Shot Print

Titled: 'And something new has been added'"

this art was very lol. all of extremely varying sizes, and all pretty much just a canvas shot up by William Burroughs. sweet!

There are many artists in the World. But I like the artists who create beautiful music. I also like visual art such as Van Gogh for his painting of the Night Sky. And of the Flowers because it was so simple.

I also find musical artists amazing. I found Beethoven amazing because he was deaf although he still kept playing. His music has come out brilliantly and I enjoy it. I am going to post a link of one of my favourite songs by him.

I enjoy that strange, and rather morbid art, that has some type of fascinating meaning behind it.
I also enjoy those art-works that are 'the-more-you-look-the-more-you-see', certainly holds your interest for longer.
However, I am sometimes prone to liking the simple pictures that have no in-depth meaning, and are simply put together for no real reason, except that the artist desired it.
Also am fond of the age-old paintings, and that one...Damnit, I cannot remember what it is called, but I remember it because of the extremely sharp contrast between light and dark. It was beautiful...

Kimon 11-15-2008 09:36 AM

Hahah, I love that one. Mayhaps you're thinking of some Neoclassicist things, there's a lot of contrast in those types of paintings.

Aye, and on a side note, I recently found out about this cool lady, due to the fact that my BEST FRIEND IS HELPING HER PAINT A MURAL AT THE UNIVERSITY OF BUFFALO HOLY SHIT!!! I like her sculptures better than the 2-D stuff, but still. Fucking great. Way to go, Catherine.

The artists name is SAYA WOOLFALK
