Games similiar to Oddworld in 2d ??
I know:
Another world (good) Heart of darkness (very very very goooood) Oneescape (average) Prince of persia 1 e 2 (very good) other ?? |
Braid, maybe? I haven't played it, but it seems to be a similar sort of thing. Unlinke those other games, the contorls arn't so... rigid, so it is less about timing and stuff... you know what I mean. Prehaps.

Braid is an awesome game but the gameplay mechanics are nothing like the Abe games.
But that doesn't mean you shouldn't try it out. |
I was thinking more about the clever puzzles and artistic presentation, so whilst it doesn't have the same control as the above listed game, I thought that somone who has enjoyed Oddworld would enjoy Braid.
But I'm guessing you've actually played the game, so... Are they ever going to release it on Steam? |
It's coming to the PC soonish. Not sure how it's going to be distributed yet.

Definitely check out Flashback, made by the same guys who did Another World. I also recall hearing it was a big inspiration to the first Oddworld games.
Blackthorne is another good 2D platformer similar to Abe. |
the long forgotten COMMANDER KEEN SERIES always reminds me of oddworld.

Anyway, the closest game I've seen that's "Like" Oddworld is Beyond Good and Evil. It's a 3D third-person game, rather than a 2D platformer, but it has a similar atmosphere to, with just as much creativity as Abe's Oddysee. Alright so the universe and creatures are not the same, but you still have to sneak into facilities and such. But yeah, also try BlackThorne - See if you can get the SNES version on a ROM and emulate with Snes 9x. You'll want the "Quicksave" and "Quickload" functions that the emulator provides, else the game won't be much fun 'cause you have to start the whole level over again if you run out of health and die, like most old DOS games. It plays a lot like the Abe games, but it's a bit harder and the storyline is a lot shallower. But it's a good game too. :) It's weird to see that Blizzard was doing that kind of thing in 1994 though. |
Also in Commander Keen you have pogo sticks and guns and there are spaceships and no take-home message.

Anyone miss the time when computer technology was accelerating that rapidly? :p It seems to be at its peak these days until they find a new way forward. Hmm, that was certainly off-topic. |
Rayman, if Rayman wasn't so cartoonish.
...You don't mess with Abe. He's one of a kind. |
i don't know how i forgot to add that rayman was really worth it.
it was so cool to have limbless character. |

Lets not forget the settings, Rupture Farms = Magical happy sound land? You best believe it! Now that I think about it Sonic and Mario have lots in common with Oddworld, and lets not stop there, what about Metroid? Samus's guns are just oversizes Slig weaponry amirite? And then what about Halo? That game borrows a lot from Oddworld, like the fact you die, and you can jump, and stuff shoots other stuff. And now I've dragged this on far too fucking long. |

BTW THERE ARE NO GAMES THAT ARE REALLY LIKE OW SO STOP LOOKING /cruise |
I suppose Medieval reminded me of Oddworld when it acme out, although now I can't really remember it!
