Lorne Lanning Interview Part 6: Fangus and Stranger

Here's one with a few of my personal questions in it that had bugged me for a while. What's more, you get to see me, once again, proved wrong regarding forum arguments (for those keeping track, I had thought that Gorman Disenza was just made up by Paul O'Connor to prove a point and I also said that Jo Momma was a drag queen outlaw).

There was one particular theory that I got very, very right but I decided to edit out the question so as to avoid too many spoilers for people. Not that Lorne answered the question any way, there was just a significant silence. :D

  2. The Philosophy of the Abe Film (discussion)
  3. The Plot of the Abe Film (discussion)
  4. The Relationship Between Abe and Sam (discussion)
  5. Glukkon History (discussion)
  6. Fangus and Stranger
  7. Abe's Moon, Re-releasing the Games, Hair Gel and Other Topics
  8. Miscellaneous Other Questions

Great read, thanks for that :D

Fuzzle Guy 08-22-2008 05:01 AM

Thankyou very much, Nate. It was great.

Go on, you can tell us...;)

Good work, by the way. I've recently been tempted back to the forum because of this stuff.

Oddsville 08-22-2008 10:49 AM

I always wondered if Lorne had originally wanted Fangus to take place on Oddworld. Great job again my friend can't wait for the next!

Bullet Magnet 08-22-2008 12:15 PM

Now I'm going to be hung up on the outlaw species' names and history. Again. Veterans, you have deceived me!

Sanssouci 08-22-2008 01:14 PM

Oh I've finally thought of a question to ask Lorne ! - are khanzumers one species or lots of species (probably including clakkerz for instance)?

Van_the_one 08-22-2008 02:15 PM

Abe will get you for teasing Lorne!
Also... i was hoping for this part to be a bit more informative, something more like... What does Stranger have to do with the whole Glukkon-Abe thing

SNegrea 08-23-2008 12:23 AM

Well, SW is in the same time frame as Munch's Oddysee, and also there are Vykkers in both games. And as far as I have heard, the consequences of Stranger's actions have something to do with Ma'Spa (don't remember exactly what) which may be in the next game with Munch... If there will be another game with Munch. Or maybe it doesn't have to do with Ma'Spa.

Suffice to say that his answer, without the question that gives it context, has been edited in to an earlier section of the interview.

I doubt that he would have given an answer to that.

I love these interviews Nate. Can't wait for the next! :D

So the 'significant silence' has been moved to another part of the interview? I better find it!

Nate 08-23-2008 06:44 AM

The significant silence, followed by a response that didn't actually answer my question but gave a pretty good hint... yes.

Fuzzle King 08-23-2008 08:29 AM

great to read,keep 'em coming!

OddjobAbe 08-23-2008 10:16 AM

This was great. I think I'm going to enjoy the next interview the most.

Gotcha, although tongue was in cheek (I was hoping for just a large gap in the middle of, say, a paragraph or sentence; e.g: "They’re vast money‐making machines; I don’t . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . remember the name of the one I’m thinking of but less than one percent of all the donations they get actually go in to research").
But anyway, great work, good questions asked.

Nice interview. Lorne is definitely the Tolkien of our generation, I just hope he will get the chance to share his world with everyone eventually.

OddYouko 08-25-2008 06:37 AM

Great interview! =D
I also can't wait for the next one!
Great stuff Nate!

crazysteef 08-25-2008 05:15 PM

Nice interview, but I was hoping to have a few more questions answered about Stranger's mysterious past...or is that forbidden territory?:fuzzle:

Bullet Magnet 08-25-2008 06:53 PM

I don't think Stranger's past even exists.

Xavier 08-25-2008 11:59 PM

I agree with BM. If you ask Lorne about it he would simply say they didn't think about it or he'd have to make some stuff up.

abe is now! 08-26-2008 12:09 AM

Sorry, why if I click fifth interview's discussion's link in this page it shows me the second interview's discussion?

Xavier 08-26-2008 12:17 AM

Probably for the same reason Nate's signature has been out dated for two weeks now. :p

Anyway I'll fix the link.

Nate 08-26-2008 04:08 AM

Oooooh... burn!

Thanks for fixing it.

KintoKid 08-26-2008 05:48 AM

As much as I dislike how long it seems to take for OWI to finish the various projects that they start, it's pretty admirable how uncompromising Lorne seems to be when it comes to keeping the welfare of a friggin' story in mind. I suppose you could call it... artistic integrity? Or something.

Anyway, I was always really baffled over the whole Fangus thing (I found out about Fangus and then found out about the OWI move within a couple of days of one another, since I'm not as adamant as some when it comes to keeping up on Oddworld news), but now it's quite a bit clearer. I always thought it was a bit of a stretch that the Outlaws were just one species, although I guess you could pin the variance in their physiques on... hick inbreeding? Toxic landfill-induced mutations? I dunno, even more than that black market vibe, I got a strong sense of redneck white trash culture when it came to the Outlaws.

Ahh, only two sections left! Convince Lorne to do one of these every week <_< Haha.

MeechShrykull1029 08-26-2008 02:09 PM

I wanted to know more about the different types of humans in The Brutal Ballad of Fangus Klot. Well, this was still a good interview.

Sanssouci 08-26-2008 02:31 PM

Well, there's dog humans and cat humans and sheep humans and goat humans and badger humans and hedgehog humans and dolphin humans and kangaroo humans

used:) 08-26-2008 05:54 PM

Sounds like Beyond Good and Evil.

crazysteef 08-26-2008 07:17 PM

Isn't there some concept art from Fangus on the forums somewhere?

Xavier 08-27-2008 12:33 AM

There are only two species we know about in the Brutal Ballad of Fangus Klot...
One that evolved from dogs and one from cats nothing else.

and concept art can be found on togg:
