AO scraped areas
Hello,
I've read at some point in a thread something about cut areas of Stockyards (with no pics on it in that thread), but I've searched on the forums and couldn't find a more detailed thread on that. Also, someone said that accessing hidden stuff from the game is hard (but possible, if I understood what (s)he meant). Could you please give some links? |
I think some early backgrounds could be discovered using the ddcheat in AO and/or its demo. For the PC.
|
If you're refering to the Paramite stockyards, then it is likely they used the same backgrounds but replaced them with Scrabs.
|
No, they were in the area where the lichen-encrusted stone of Monsaic Lines encroaches on the nether regions of Zulag 1
|
I couldn't figure out what area you are talking about. I've been on the two screens around the "Bring us to the bird/save us all" stone, I've been on the Monsaic Lines screen with the portal to Stockyards Escape, nothing happens if I fly around with Abe (although I've noticed that on that ML screen there is a white outline in a section on down right).
|
The place BM is talking about can only be found in the AO demo and you have to use the ddcheat to get there. It's right next the two zap doors at the bottom of the RuptureFarms level when you go all the way to the right. There you can find an alternative screen.
That's what my memory is telling me, but on the other hand I can't find any evidence of that screen in my ripped backgrounds. |
Didn't someone access the "Coming September 1997" or whatever screen in the full game somehow?

[Tried posting this about an hour ago. OWF crashed. And burnt. But we keep coming back.]
I know this screen. I remember when it was first discovered not via noclip but thanks to a glitch that allowed Abe to walk past the double electric walls as though they weren’t there. But my memory agrees with you, Xav: surely this was in the background rip set. Apparently not, because it’s not in my collection, either. We must be getting confused because you can use noclip to fly to R1P19C03 (the ‘Save us’ screen) in the final PC version. I will try to find back the screen, its discovery, and its discoverer. There is another missing screen, but this time it’s accessible. I forget which version, but there is a screen (R2P16C08) in Rescue Zulag 1 that is down a pit which during Abe’s escape is covered by a trapdoor and leads to a death fall. It has a Shrykull Portal down it. Anyway, in one version of the game you can fall down the pit during Abe’s escape and reach this screen. The CAM file is not included, so it’s a patterned grey background with a horizontal line which marks the ground. Instead of falling offscreen and screaming, Abe splats on the line. I will try to find this back, too. |

Are you guys able to get screenshots of these? I've never heard anything about these 'leftover' screens and it's intrigued me.

SligStorm was the one who found them both. There you go...

Edit: ....?! Oh my, sorry! Xavier posted it first. XD Weird, I didn't see your post before I posted.. Sorry again, you can delete this post. |
Thanks for that leftover screen.
I already knew the grey screen; I've seen it in a slightly different version on YouTube (in which the background is the only one missing, the objects are in their right place), I once tried to see it but the glitch is fixed in the version I have. Still, I was hearing something about cut areas (probably more than one screen) in Stockyards, not Monsaic Lines or RF Zulag 1. Don't know what to say, since when using noclip, I clearly couldn't access the deleted ares of Stockyards in the Return to Stockyards level. Anyway, there are obviously more areas of RF that weren't used in the game, like the labor eggs storage or the Glukkon offices (since the Gluks aren't supposed to stay tall in the boardroom until the rest of their lives, right?)... |
Well done, Xav. I’m positive I’d have beaten you to it had OWF been working last night. :p
I’ve never heard of any explicitly deleted sections of the Stockyards. Although screenshots do show parts with Paramites in them, it seems like they were replaced by Scrabs. There are undoubtedly such deleted paths that went through to various stages of design, construction and testing before it was deemed better they be excluded from the final build, but I don’t think any accessible in the final game. Not with noclip, at least. I’ve gone off every edge of every screen, I would have noticed a wholly new area. There must be all sorts of areas in RuptureFarms that we didn’t see in the game, but that’s not to say they were ever designed to be included. There is one such section I know of, the ‘Cell Condo Silo’ where Mudokons sleep. There is production artwork of this place by Steven Olds in the Art Book and by Raymond Swanland on OddBlog. It looks like it will make an appearance in the Abe film. |

The background on the screen with the Scrab and the Mudokon in the Stockyards is different from the background in the screen with the 3 Paramites in the Stockyards. This means that there were supposed to be 2 different parts of the Stockyards: one with the Scrabs, and the other with the Paramites.
|
Screenshots please? It would be easier to have some images to understand what you are talking about.
|
You can see that the screenshot with the Scrab has hanging meat on the ringt, and the screenshot with the Paramites has pipes on the right.
The Scrab screenshot: http://www.mobygames.com/game/window...eShotId,12438/ The Paramite screenshot: http://www.oddworld.com/games/abesod...escreens.shtml (look at the one in the Stockyards with 3 Paramites.) |
I don't think you have enough material to actually deduce there were supposed to be 2 different parts. Yes there are slight variations, but it's clearly the same screen. When you look at the final build of AO, all the screens are really different.
|
Yes, clearly a WIP and final version of the exact same screen
