Lorne Lanning Interview #3 - The Plot of the Abe Film
Hi all. This week we have part three of my interview with Lorne Lanning, meistersinger of the Oddworld mythos. This section was answering a few questions I had regarding the Abe film, given the extra backstory mentioned in the Art book. Lorne discusses his vision for the Abe film and what we should expect.
Part #3 can be found here. Discussion of parts #1 and #2 can be found here. |
That was good stuff, thanks a lot nate :D:D
ABM :p |
Thankyou Nate. ;)
|
Wow, it's pretty interesting to hear it from Lornes perspective. All the differences there could have been. Can't wait for the movie, thanks Nate.
|
Neato, way to go, Nate.
|
Ahhh very interesting, you know what...
What Lorne said does actually does shine through in the first game a little. The first time you are actually instructed (or taught) to use Abe's possession ability in when you meet Big Face and get to the Story Stone in the Monsaic Lines, there is a little puzzle to possess a Slig there and to be honest you don't have to talk to anyone to get out of Rupture Farms in beginning either. Cheerz Nate! MattchewJDB |
Very good stuff Nate... glad to have something to chew on during this long wait.
|
Holy crap! Reading this makes me want to see the Abe movie even more!!
Great stuff Nate!! :D Really awesome! |
Intriguing stuff. I just hope what Sanssouci was telling me yesterday about the only Rupturefarms produce being cattle, as opposed to Paramites, Scrabs, Elum and (formerly) meech Munchies, isn't correct. As I don't think i could imagine Rutpure Farsm without Scrabcakes, paramite Pies etc. Plus the whole moral significance of the Meeches would be lost.
Still, I'm sure the film will still be very good. The itnerview is certainly brilliant though. Great job, Nate! |
Well, I was referring to the movie plot flowchart in Inside Game Design. It describes the livestock as cattle - veal, bulls, etc - which logically makes more sense than farming predators such as scrabs or paramites. I'd wager that scrabs and paramites as farm animals was simply something for the games and we won't see their derivative products, though I'm sure they as animals will turn up somewhere.
(not that I'm suggesting the film's cattle won't be oddified) This interview is fantastic for explaining the changes. It seems that the movie is going to be a completely different version of Oddworld. As Lorne says in that interview, "Very similar at a thematic and basic plot level", but not an adaptation. For example: :
If anything, it looks like the films will be closer to the original vision as plot elements had to change and be simplified to make a game while they don't necessarily to make a film. I'm looking forward to knowing the full plot and seeing another version of these stories. |
I must see this plot flowchart, everyone seems to have a damn copy of it!?
|
These interviews are the most interesting thing to happen Oddworld related in a long long while. Thanks so much. :D
|
Thanks, Nate. It's really great to see what's going on with it all. Very intersting.

I've attached the timeline in JPEG format, as the original BMP is 26MB :p
The photos in the IGD book belong to OWI, and as far as I'm aware, Lorne Lanning has encouraged some of us to report/post as much OWI information as we can. Alcar... |
Whilst, of course, we encourage people to buy the IGD book to see everything for themselves.
