My Interview With Lorne Part #2

As many of you know, earlier this year I was travelling through California and had a chance to meet up with Lorne Lanning. After a great many delays (less than half of which were actually due to my own incompetence), I am proud to join together with my associates at Oddblog to present the interview.

It ended up being quite lengthy (1 hour 20 of tape, 11 pages of text) so we've decided to split it in to smaller chunks, sorted by theme. A new part will be published every friday for the next eight weeks.

As a preview, here are the headings:
  1. Citizen Siege and Current Projects
  2. The Philosophy of the Abe Film
  3. The Plot of the Abe Film
  4. The Relationship Between Abe and Sam
  5. Glukkon History
  6. Fangus and Stranger
  7. Abe's Moon, Re-releasing the Games, Hair Gel and Other Topics
  8. Miscellaneous Other Questions

Part 2: The Philosophy of the Abe Film can be read on OddBlog now.

Nice work Nate! I'll start reading this when I get home from school, I look forward to it. ;)

Alcar 07-18-2008 02:51 AM

Yay! At last it's been published!

Alcar...

-jumps up and down-

Thanks very much Nate and others who helped get this up. It's looking promising so far, though I won't deny it was a touch disappointing to finally get the interview to see only three questions, and about stuff I'm not interested in.
I'm not entirely sure of the reasoning for splitting it up over eight weeks but I'm sure you have some.

Looking forward to more parts.

Nate 07-19-2008 04:31 AM

It's loooong. I'll agree that this first section is very short but, believe me, it's building to some pretty huge revelations.

Bullet Magnet 07-19-2008 12:25 PM

Finally. Also: short!

Xavier 07-19-2008 12:41 PM

like BM said...

skillya_glowi 07-19-2008 05:07 PM

Thanks, this should be really interesting. I can't believe you had a chance to meet Lorne, lucky bastard! :D

GlukkonGluk 07-20-2008 05:23 AM

*does excitable jig on table*
At last some real stuff about developments, philosophy, and glukkon history!

As you may have guessed by my post, i am back, to im sure many peoples unhappiness.

Wil 07-25-2008 01:49 AM

Huh, I would have thought this thread would have got more attention. It had better over the remaining instalments. There is some grand stuff here. The second part of Nate’s interview is now up!

alf's brother's mate 07-25-2008 03:03 AM

So.. is the abe film themed around the game?

ABM :p

Nate 07-25-2008 04:33 AM

This one clears up a few misconceptions about how Abe's voice changed from game to game. I wish I had the cables to take the quotes off the recorder to demonstrate the difference. Of course... then you'd hear the random beeps and constant interruptions from the car's GPS system that peppered our conversation.

Also, what I like about this bit (though it maybe doesn't come across as well textually) is the sheer passion that Lorne has for his work. He really is still eager to tell these stories and what he's talking about here is why he's like that and how, when he does tell them, he really wants to get it right.

Sanssouci 07-25-2008 05:21 AM

Too short again, especially considering the third part will be on the same topic. Anyway, still very interesting.
Also:
"I was looking this morning at a photograph from some magazine of a flowchart of the Abe film’s plot"
??????

Wil 07-25-2008 06:03 AM

That will be an image from Inside Game Design by Ian Simons. That’s where we got the Citizen Siege production paintings from, by the way.

I think I can understand that you might be finding these segments too short. After all, nobody likes to be kept on tenterhooks or on a drip-feed. But trust me, this is an epic face‐to‐face fan interview, something we’ve never really had the pleasure of before. The stuff here has bowled over everyone who’s read it. We’re delivering it episodically to keep everyone interested for longer.

Oddsville 07-25-2008 06:04 AM

I think its great!, thanks for the interview again Nate. I am alittle confused about the magazine flowchart thing though, did you actually see the plot in some magazine?

Edit- Max just explained before I got my post out.

sam250 07-25-2008 06:09 AM

Four. To. Eight. Years?!

*cry*

Seriously, great interview though, really interesting. Can't wait for the next parts.

Wil 07-25-2008 06:15 AM

To elucidate, this chart doesn’t actually give away the plot in any detail. It contains cryptic little descriptions of various plot points that obviously make sense to Lorne Lanning and anyone else working on the game who needs to be aware of how the story develops, but make no sense in their current context. Highlights include ‘Molluck’s Nightmare’, ‘Strange happenings’, ‘Faith in Beasts = Faith in Self’, and my personal favourite, ‘Abe googoo eyes’. A lot of the descriptions are actually about characters we’ve never seen before: Stumpy (apparently Abe’s room mate), Parix, Knockout, Cormin Garvel, and Iblet Kikki.

...Cormin Garvel, and Iblet Kikki.

So that old post about the Infrogames forum was right?
*I saw that you were looking at it Max*
And is there anywhere I can get a look at this plot line?

OddYouko 07-25-2008 06:55 AM

Yay! Second part!
Great job Nate!! This is all very interesting and fun to read. :D
This makes me even more excited to see the Abe film!

Wait what? Josh Gabriel did Abe's voice in AO? Or just the "Hello" in the Gamespeak?

The answer to that is... I'm not sure. But I think perhaps just the gamespeak voice.

Venks 07-25-2008 07:51 PM

I have nothing, but faith in Lorne Lanning, but dang... 4 to 8 years? I want to still be young when I've seen the 5th movie.

Nate 07-25-2008 08:47 PM

4-8 years from beginning working on it. He's been working on both Citizen Seige and the Abe film for years now. What's more, the time periods for the later films will overlap with the previous ones. We're not talking 5X8=40 years for the quintology.

Wil 07-26-2008 01:05 AM

What’s wrong with being in your twenties? Now, being in your thirties…

alf's brother's mate 07-26-2008 02:36 AM

I suppose twenties isnt as bad, but still it would be more fun if i was still young. :D

4-8 years is better than never though :D:D
