Anti-Oddworld comic

It's sad that there are people that hate Lorne Lanning like that.

(Found it on http://pennyarcade.wikia.com/wiki/May_2,_2005 )

What do you think of that?

Alcar 05-12-2008 07:24 AM

Read the associated news post, PA makes fun of everyone, and I can see the humour. It's also not the only one they've done of Lorne before.

Alcar...

Matriar 05-12-2008 07:51 AM

Okay,I didn't know this guy. Sorry for making this thread.

Fuzzle Guy 05-12-2008 08:53 AM

Lol. You don't have to agree with it to understand it's funny.

Wings of Fire 05-12-2008 08:57 AM

I don't understand how it's funny :(.

I believe Lorne has a bit of a reputation in the VG industry.

Lorne's reasonable. There is stuff going on noone wants to know.

EDIT: I mean that stuff with the candy for example. I wouldn't make jokes about people who try to bring the truth, that's why I don't quite like that comic.

Xavier 05-12-2008 10:07 AM

This is more then 2 years old... and I didn't like that comic either.

Wil 05-12-2008 02:33 PM

It was my least favourite of all PA’s takes on Oddworld (one of which Nate recently referenced). The ones where Lorne fights for and celebrates his money are much funnier. My understanding is that Lorne himself was a little hurt by them, but I’m not afraid to laugh at something I love so dearly and intently as Oddworld and its creator, whether there’s malicious truth behind it or just an outragious fabrication.

I don’t need to pull a sour face at low-brow mockery to prop up my devoted appreciation of everything Oddworld is and stands for.

The news post for the other one:

:

The strip has a sharpness to it, something mean, but speaking for myself the idea that I could just watch an Oddworld story without having to twiddle a gamepad is something I'm genuinely looking forward to. Stranger, what would eventually come to be called Stranger's Wrath, was my favorite of the bunch - and I was still toiling from cinema to cinema. The desire to slide into noninteractive entertainment has always been there - their Big Brand aspirations being clear from the first Abe manual - and I think it's also clear that he would enjoy it more anyway. For an extremely intense interview with Lorne Lanning on closing down development and the realities of business as a third party, clicka this link.

I actually think its funny. Jokes are a high form of flattery, or so i've heard. C:

This is old, as are most comics that have made fun of Lorne. I don't really think it's funny, but I'm not offended. Part of stepping out into the world of art and videogames is the risk of getting lampooned. But because I didn't think it was funny (or that clever for that matter), it's not worth it to me to either laugh or powt about it.

Leto 05-12-2008 11:36 PM

dont get the first comic.

2nd comic has slight lols. Duke Nukem meets Jazz Jackrabbit in the Worms 3D universe

ThaError 05-13-2008 01:21 AM

Lol its funny we need more ^^

Alf Shall Rise 05-13-2008 06:37 PM

Like many of the previous posts, I only understand the second comic and I do think it's quite humorous.

OANST 05-14-2008 03:21 PM

They make me giggle. Some of you fail to realize that he has made a few choices based on the betterment of his pockets as opposed to the betterment of his ip. Yes, ladies and gentlemen. He is a sell out.

But, hey. Who isn't?

mudling 05-16-2008 01:27 AM

Is there something I don't know?
I realy was not aware of his money hoarding status, let alone how he earned it, so.. er, how did he earn it, which specific instances are you refering to ONAST?
Don't get me wrong, I don't think it's beyond him, I just don't know what everyone is talking about.

Wil 05-16-2008 01:45 PM

It’s largely rubbish speculation from when Lorne suddenly switched Munch to Xbox. Allegedly, there was a lucrative money deal from Microsoft behind it.

It isn't rubbish when you rush out a sub-standard product just so you can be part of a launch title tour and put products placement in your game. Alsooooooo, they made a game that they said they would never never ever make because the other games weren't bringing in enough money.

Bullet Magnet 05-16-2008 03:55 PM

Because the other games were selling. It's all right to tell great stories, but a bit of a waste of time if no one listens to them. With the old fans they're pretty much preaching to the choir.

Actually, MO sold fairly well despite it's shit gameplay. If they had continued it but actually took the time needed to make a great game it would have sold much better. Don't get me wrong. I really, really enjoyed SW. But that doesn't change the fact that Lanning and company made something that they claimed to detest just because that's where the market was.

Nate 05-16-2008 07:13 PM

They didn't have the choice to take more time. Microsoft forced them into the position of making an Xbox launch game. If they'd taken more time they'd have been in breach of contract.

Wil 05-17-2008 02:00 AM

MO sold well because people were expecting a brilliant game from the makers of Abe’s Oddysee and Exoddus, and had heard great things about it all through its development. Had they taken their time, they’d have fallen out of favour with their publisher and technical support, a huge no-no. Lorne expected to be able to recycle the game engine to continue the story of Munch, making up for the gameplay and plot cuts to the Oddysee, but found that the A.L.I.V.E. 2 engine was not able to take full advantage of the Xbox’s capabilities because it had been designed to run on the PS2.

To financially justify making yet another game engine, he had to make sure the game was going to sell, so he went back on much of what he said about muscle-bound characters and FPS gameplay to appeal to the greatest gaming demographic. And he would have gotten away with it too, if it hadn’t been for those meddling EA kids.

We all know Lorne went back on his word, did what he said he’d never do. I’ve even quoted what he said about never making an FPS or muscle-bound hero in my sig in protest. But in the end he made SW so great while still being infused with all the essence of Oddworld, all he did was expand what Oddworld could cover and accomplish. I say we let him off. All he did was change his mind.

Wow, wasn’t expecting that to be an epic.

Bullet Magnet 05-17-2008 03:01 AM

I've always admired a man who can change his mind. Inexplicably, it is actually seen as a detriment in politics.

OANST 05-17-2008 07:35 AM

I already said that it wasn't a big deal. However, he did do it. It's the mindless adoration that bothers me.

Just like Journey, or Les Miserables.

I hate them.... they could be funny for somenone but noy for me. I love Oddworld and everything it's against it (even though they should be funny) MUST BURN AND DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!! (That's my opinion).

Nate 05-18-2008 03:06 AM

Okay, abe is now. Take a deep breath. Calm down. GET A BIT OF PERSPECTIVE.

You can love Oddworld and still take a joke about it.
You can love Oddworld and still hear criticism of it.
You can love Oddworld and still respect other people's opinions about it.

Burning and dieing is not very helpful.

Ok Nate, please forgive me for my impulsive protest... I took it like an insult to Oddworld. Now I wonder: is it?
