Look at that mountains, then I wondered (aren't that mountains from Doom?)
Then I got a picture from Google of Doom. (E1M1)

I've never played Doom, thought it took place on mars though.

I'm afraid they were fresh out of Mars mountain stock images.

Doom 1 was on Phobos or Deimos, actually.

My latest Doom1 experience is quite fresh, but I haven't seen that area nor the background anywhere.

It's either from Ultimate Doom/some other extended version, or a modded level.

No. It was on Phobos AND Deimos, Ghost.

And Dripik, that is from the original. I have the full version and the v1.666 shareware version, they've always been there.

I'm off to play it now.

Edit: For those of you who want to know the Doom screenshot is from E1M1 in the courtyard. Yeah it's only because I play that level alot.

You might be right, I'm not saying that I know every inch of the game. That building on the right was not familiar to me, that's all.

Oh yeah, why exactly WAS Hell underneath Mars' moons, anyway?

I think it was something like "a gateway to Hell's been opened up on one of Mars' moon, and now the crazy place has come through". I have no idea how it happened to be honest. I only vaguely remember the manual.

Because there was two gateways between both Deimos and Phobos. They turned out to be portals from hell. And therefore hellspawn started to come through them. And it started at Deimos. Deimos completely vanished not long after losing communication (Probrably because it had been covered with hellspawn for so long.). And after you complete Episode 2 then you find out it teleported above Hell. And so that is pretty much why. It doesn't clearly state it in the manual, so it's anyone's guess.

But why were there portals?

I remember reading the manual. Some Union Aerospace Corporation was experimenting with teleportation.
