Final Fantasy 7 & 8. Are they worth getting?

Retro gaming FTW. :P And I'm running out of PSX games to play while Alector does art-related things with the PC. I like RPGs to some extent and people say that Final Fantasy 7 & 8 are both really, really awesome.

I've had a look at the vids. They have good graphics for their time, but the soundtrack and interface both seem to be pretty crappy for both games compared to other games that came out at around the same time as they did. I'm familiar with FFX and XII, which I both kind of enjoyed but they both seemed to lack something as games. And they both had strange storylines that I had to concentrate on to keep track of at the beginning of each, until things became clearer later. Seems to be typical for FF.

Anyway, my question. Are FF7 and FF8 really that fantastic or are they simply overhyped?

Wings of Fire 04-23-2008 03:52 AM

Final Fantasy VII and VIII are timeless classics like the Oddworld games and others, still just as playable now as they were back in the day.

FFX was a devolution in the series in my opinion, it seemed a bit lifeless compared to 6,7,8 and 9. The story in FFX was rather convoluted compared to 7 (Maybe not so much 8) and just wasn't as appealing. The characters in 7 and 8 are far better than any in 10, Tidus is a godawful protagonist compared to Cloud and Squall is one of the most human characters I have ever played as.

Also the soundtrack of 7 and 8 rock, I have it on CD and One Wing Angel, Aeris' death music and Eyes On Me are three of my fave all time melodies.

Definitely purchase FF7. It's worth every penny.

FF8... Well, it's my least favourite of the Final Fantasy series. But I do know a lot of people that absolutely loved it.

Alcar...

How can a game series of 10+ parts still be enjoyable...

Strike Witch 04-23-2008 01:05 PM

FF8. It's the best final fantasy game, hands down.

If only for Squall "Whatever" Leonheart.

DarkHoodness 04-23-2008 02:09 PM

Eh okay, I'll get them for the pure reason of Video Gaming culture, then. :P Maybe I can score them cheaply on E-Bay. Cheers dudes.

Leto 04-24-2008 02:31 AM

I'd reccomned VIII, my favourite, VII is alright... but VIII is the moneydew. only FF I can say I really enjoyed.

because it completely changes with each title.

Hobo 04-26-2008 06:37 AM

VII.

DADDA DA DA DA DA DADADA!

(Battle victory noise ftw)

Strike Witch 04-28-2008 01:00 PM

They're all pretty much like that, Hobo.

Well, the ones I've played, anyway.

Mac Sirloin 04-28-2008 01:52 PM

FFVII: worth it. If you can ignore the fanboy's it's an excellent game, but a LOT of grinding is necessary.

FFVIII: Shitsux. I couldn't stand this game. Only good thing is the Spider Robot.
Also: whatever.

Bullet Magnet 04-28-2008 02:22 PM

I know no one who actually played FFXI. Does anyone else?

Wings of Fire 04-28-2008 02:25 PM

Stopped playing Everquest, started playing FFXI.

.....After two weeks of WTFBBQ I switched to WOW 8D addictions ftw.

Actually, it's "...Whatever."

=3

Wings of Fire 04-29-2008 01:16 PM

Back on topic.

Killing the Spider in the time limit while maintaining max marks for time and non-fleeing is fun :D.

Strike Witch 04-29-2008 09:09 PM

It had that sweeping laser explosion attack. I HATED that.

mitsur 04-30-2008 03:48 PM

FF7 is awesome. FF8 I never played past the first part because my disc was corrupted and I didn't have the money for a new one.

I still regret that.

P.S. Crysis Core is lame except for the cinematics.

Salamander 05-01-2008 12:32 AM

FF7 is probably the best Final Fantasy ever made.
FF8... I never really got into it.
Get FF9, that's really great too.

FF9>FF7>FF8

FF8>FF7>FF9

Bullshit on all except character.

It's clearly

Story
FF8>FFTA>FF7>FF3US>The rest

Gameplay
FFTA>FF8>FF3US>FF7>the rest

OddYouko 05-07-2008 05:37 PM

The FMV's for those games are so awesome! I've never played them but they do look cool.

Final Fantasy VII ate my life and introduced me to video games. Big ups on that one, a definite purchase.

Never played the 8...

If your going to get into the FF7 series i beg you not to look into the compilation.
Its 10 years of absolute crap ill run down the compilation for you.

Advent children- Summer action flick derivative of plot. The fight scenes are well thought out but the story unfortunately is not.

Befor Crisis- Wtf its on a cell phone walk away now.

Crisis Core- The only good part about this game is the cinematic and the plot. The game play on the other hand is a X-button mash fest which ruins the game and story. Think of it this way your sitting down watching a good movie except you have to pause it every 2 minutes and be away for 20 minutes then watch it again only to pause again and leave.

Dirge of Cerberus- Also completely shitty if your going to pick this up i high recommend looking in the bargain bin at game stop or something as its going to have you tearing out your hair.

That said FF7 is a timeless classic , its slightly over rated but none the less its still a good game. I suggest you pick up both games as they shouldn't be to expensive if you pick up the greatest hits version.

DarkHoodness 05-13-2008 04:28 AM

lol, yay, I started a debate. :P

Still, getting original FF7 and FF8 at some point. Just I haven't had the time to sit down and play games for a little while. Afterwards though. :P I don't think I'll get any more of the series except for those two, since, while good, I've never been that much into the FF series, even if I'm familier with it.

But none of that shit matters, because FF8 is better.

Gabrielacf 05-13-2008 05:12 AM

Ill actually agree with that.
