Why do we like OW???
Yesterday, I wonder me why do I love OW so much. I think it's because the beauty of the level for AO and AE (I've never played MO and SW but you can react on), but I think the level design aren't the lonely cause of the distinctive feature of Oddworld. What are your favourite levels and why? Can you help me to find what makes OW so exceptiolnal?
Thanks:) |
For me, it's probably because for the majority of my time in 1997 and 98, the only thing that was ever on the TV screen was Oddworld. My Mum was a huge fan, so my brother and I soon followed.
I loved the character Abe. What he was. Who he was. I felt sorry for him when I found out he was going to be food - My brother even cried when my Mum got the bad ending. Now I'm older, I see the great things Oddworld has. FMV's of Movie Quality, Realistic graphics in a 2D game, brilliant Ideas that I will remember for the rest of my life, and countless hours of fun. And when they changed to 3D ODDVISION it still did it for me. The ideas, the movie quality, the graphics - The amount of character and personality they put into the creatures (Fuzzles, Outlawz, Mudokons, Sligs.) And last, but most definately not least, the amount of humour, be it dark or light, and irony that is in Oddworld. God, I love Oddworld :p |
For me too it makes me remember old memory. I was 7 when I discover it in France. But in my family I was the only to like that game (today too:p). My father said it was a game for madman!! But Abe makes me laugh since the first time I saw him on my TV screen.

It was Abe that got me hooked to Oddworld. He was just a unique character. The creepy, dark, and just plain cool-ness got me into Abe's Oddysee. I admit I was scared at AO at first but soon fall in love with the game. Plus the awesome music and graphics. I forgot the odd creatures and how they looked so unique aswell.
Yeah I'm the only one who plays it in my house also. :) It's just an awesome game what else is there to say. As long as I shall live I shall forever stay an Oddworld fan! |
This is a tough question. There's a lot of things that connect me to Oddworld and make it unique. [all this is referring to AO and, more or less, AE] First, there's the concept. Lorne Lanning decided to go against all odds and actually discourage violence/slaughter/aggression in videogames and use it as a method of telling a story. And there was something poetic about the story itself - a scrawny slave rising up, freeing his kind and standing up to the corporate menace that is constricting the Oddworld Universe. I just found that kind of empowering.
Then, of course, there's the art. Oddworld's design (well, mostly the design of Abe's Oddysee) is beyond beautiful and is more of an art form than a videogame. It's like it's a painting after a painting after a painting. [Referring to Abe's Oddysee...] And every part of the journey has this atmosphere to it. And it takes you so far, I mean, you start out in basically a filthy, industrialised slaughterhouse and then in the middle, you end up on a spiritual quest through holy Mudokon caverns. It really gives you the feeling that you're on this journey of great magnitude, that you're doing something important. And for me personally, also the memories with this game add to the list of reasons I still enjoy it - I've had Abe's Oddysee since I was about eight, and I played it very frequently, both alone and with friends, I even snuck on my parents' computer when they were out so I could play it. So when I play it now, it like takes me back and there's an element of nostalgia to it... I can't really explain it any better than that (well, I probably can, but...lazy :p). It's just a part of me, still to this day. |
I like Oddworld because:
1. Great creature/environment desings. 2. Use of SO many puzzles to make everything more fun (Obviously mostly in the first two games) 3. And the deep dark style of the first two games gave off a mysterous, eerie enigma that made me want to see more of the 'mysterious' Oddworld. |
For me it's the imaginative style of gameplay. No other games are really based on a guy that can't kill people/defend himself. Even SW, which doesn't fit into that description, still has a unique style, blending first person and third person. It makes everything you do more fun:fuzgrin:

When I was younger I loved the Oddworld creatures (abe, scrabs, paramites, all of the rest) and I think that is why I played them at first. Now I am older I still love the creatures but I also think the story lines carry really good messages. The graphics and cinematics also keep me as a fan, and the gaming styles are very unique.

Because it's unique.
|
Originallity, the great world, the immersive stories and characters, the artistic design, etc. :D
|
Because its just so creative and interesting. the only thing the dissapointed me was when I heard thy were cancelling all those games :(
|
because, its environments are immersive, it charactors are the unlikeliest of heros, because of the tension that builds when you face tough enemies, because of the amount of time you spend playing it, because oddworld is massive and leaves the player curious as to what is next
|
Because of the awesomeness that was when I possessed a slig and said 'Hi' to another slig before making swiss cheese out of him 8D.
I think I just lowered the tone of this discussion. |
Well obviously because it was fun, and unique.
Not the same old game thats the same as all the rest and it focuses on single player. Yea and it's odd mwahaha just the kind of game I like, I kinda hate games that try to be too realistic..no fun. |
Its because their games have beautiful visual art, awesome gameplay, and are more addictive than crack.
In other words, its just plain fun. |
I always loved Oddworld because of all the wonderful and creative ideas that went into it. There were some very artistic people working at OWI, and they have my respect. The characters are charming, as they all have very unique personalities (that cannot be said for a lot of games).
An unbelievable amount of effort went into them, and the thought that such a unique game could be made has me in... I'm not sure. It's a beautiful thought. A video game is only one approach to exploring such a fascinating and imaginative world. It's not so much the games that kept me hooked, but the world contained within the games. For example, on most games, if you see beyond the map, you think 'what does that area look like if there's no data there?'. Oddworld was different. It always made me think 'what's beyond that background?'. The creatures are just as amazing. It is obvious that they are a representation of creatures in our world, but at the same time, it's not so obvious. The natural creatures were always my favorites. Scrabs and Paramites were the ones I loved most. Though Munch's Oddysee lacked the effort and detail put into the first two games, it contained a subliminal message that really made me think. When you here 'animal testing', you think (or at least I think) 'they're animals. They have no personality'. Well, not think so much, Munch's Oddysee changed that. When you put a character like Munch in the same shoes as, say, a rabbit, you feel sympathy. The message that Munch's Oddysee tried to get through made that the greatest Oddworld game for me. I loved the representation of a 'western world' in Stranger's Wrath. Just the fact that we got to see a whole knew part of Oddworld was exciting enough, never mind it being set in a representation of one of my favorite regions. So that round about sums up my love for Oddworld. Goodnight everyone. Goodnight. |
Because I played Oddworld for more than 2 years (I forgot about it for 4 years once), and it was intersting to find out what was on the next screen.
