A glimpse of Citizen Siege
OddBlog is pleased to present you it's new "OddBlog Special" called: ‘A glimpse of Citizen Siege’.
We provide you with seven Citizen Siege production paintings by Raymond Swanland, used by Lorne to pitch the film. Four of them could already be found in Iain Simon’s book, Inside Game Design, published in 2007. Those were scanned an posted here by Alcar. So now here they are in mighty hi-resolution and accompanied by three additional exclusive pictures. A glimpse of Citizen Siege |
Excellent, truly excellent.
Thank you Max and Xavier! Alcar... |
I wouldn't say 'it's all coming together', but damn... I'm seriously finding it difficult to have to wait until 2010 for this movie to come out. Cheers for those, they're bloody excellent.
|
Thanks for the pictures :)
P.S I wonder what this is? :S http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/i.../CACS00012.jpg |
That's one of Lorne's visit cards, like the one I have.
|
Nice. Were the comments underneath the photos written by Lorne or by you?
|
Yay! These a brilliant pieces of art.
http://oddworldlibrary.net/oddblog/s...s/CACS0006.jpg Is that Lorne on the left of the picture? |
Thank you Xavier! They are awesome :)!!!

Yes, I should make explicit that the writing is our own, and should not have any real authority read into it. I should really make explicit a couple more things in the article, but I was pressed for time and published this just ten minutes before I had to jet off to work.
I do love the giant robotic security cameras. They’re outrageously obvious and intrusive, a sure sign that the people in the Citizen Siege universe have signed their freedoms away for the promise of security. And Manchines! Finally, this mysterious word is acquiring a meaning! |
Hell, thats great! See what the Odds are up to next!! XD Damn, looks Hard core! Thankies :D
|
This seems like Oddworld inviades Earth. O_o
|
Yay, it's always good to see more artwork from Raymond Swanland. :D I like how he always sets the atmosphere perfectly in his pics, and you can always tell his style.
:
But it all still reminds me of Half-Life 2 somewhat. :P I hope this changes. |
Look at the gass prices on the second picture!
Love the pictures! |
Oh! I just realised something! I could be wrong, but you know, this is just what I think. And maybe some other people here have said this already, but this may back up what they said.
http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...6&d=1205860954 Look carefully at this picture. Now we can all see it in higher quality, do you all notice how quickley it's been done? Right. Now, look at the difference between the Shell logo, the background, and the drawn soldiers and scenary in the foreground. This concept art is a mix between brush strokes and photo manipulation, all to set the scene, which is the whole purpose of concept artwork. :P For this, I really don't think OWI are promoting Shell at all - It's simply used as an example. Early production days, huh? :) |
You have a good eye for detail, Hoody. XD
Anyway, in my opinion, I know for myself and from my apprenticeship as a graphics designer that concept artwork must be done in a hurry, yet it must bring the perfect effect of what the concept is about, mostly using colours and light. Raymond Swanland used thick paint strokes in photoshop to bring the effect of the foreground in comparison to the lighter mix of real photos in the background. It is quite clever and awe inspiring - Even I couldn't think of doing something like that. XD But Lorne probably stands behind Raymond in his leather pants while he draws, dancing and yelling "Quicker! Quicker!" X) EDIT: :

Awesome pictures there! Getting more pumped for this movie at every little thing I see for it!
As for the Shell issue... I agree with Ol' Fuzzle Guy. I don't think that the inclusion of Shell is going to ruin the movie, and it at least helps people relate to it a bit more. |
I don’t think Citizen Siege will promote Shell; if anything, more like the opposite. Dismote it. It will be a blessing if they can get away with it. Not just make the Citizen Siege world more believable, it will give Shell and the oil industry a real kick in the groin.
The ‘visit cards’ are just Lorne’s business cards, with his contact details on, such as any person might have. They’re not exactly high-class merchandise (although we made sure we got them ;)). |
I'm glad to see some Oddworldian influances in CS. While it's not set on Oddworld or has any of the characters, it still has that certain feel to it and thats good to see.
However I am a bit worried about the visual quality CS is going to be. When OWI started with OA 12 or so years ago they were top notch when it came to 3D movies. IMO they stood above even things like Pixar and stuff and they revolutionized the way 3D movies were used in games in their own way. However, the CGI movie industry has done a LOT in the past 12 years and has surpassed OWI in almost every way when it comes to movie quality. Games that are being released right now have some of the most awsome CGI movies I have seen to date, Army of Two to give a prime example. I am worried that in the next two to three years the CGI industry will be moving on while OWI will stay with the technology they had when they started on CS. As a result we'll get a movie that might not be up to the standards we'll be used to by then. It will always be OWI's in-house style but I'm afraid their biggest enemy is constantly changing technology and the low funding they have compared to other companies. Anyway, that was my little rant. The concept art looks very good. Thanks for posting Xav and Max :D. |
Very beautiful, I love the dark atmosphere. And having elements in the movie that are from the world we know makes it easier to relate to the world that is being introduced, right? It'll be interesting to see the picture CS paints of the future, however from the concept art, it's obviously not an optimistic one.
Thank you Max and Xavier :D |
Yay, wrong wording. :P
By promoting, I meant that OWI probably won't be featuring, be sponsered by or having anything to do with, business wise, with Shell. You can tell why I don't want them to be officially sponsered by Shell, right? It'd be bad considering OWI's attitude. Maybe it's a little silly 'cause there isn't any basis for it except for the storyline that they want to use for CS, but that's what I feared, after Micro$uck. It's got nothing to do with making the CS storyline more believeable by having a well-known, real brand name in it. But actually, where did you all get that idea from anyway? Even if they were attacking Shell directly, it'd be bad to include a real product into thier movie, not only 'cause they'd be paying rights, but also 'cause of subliminal advertising. The storyline of CS may put most people off buying from Shell in future, but people are really stupid and may not make the link. Lemme elaborate a bit more. You also have to consider that the storyline will probably (But I don't know for sure of course, this is just what I think :P) follow characters around and thier stories, while giving a message against the concept of corperate greed as a whole, rather than being against any single company. And this is why, IMO, It'd be bad if the Shell logo appeared in all this, 'cause of subliminal advertising, like I mentioned above. Now do you get me? :P |
Okay. Citizen Siege is going to be awesome.
Thanks Max and Xavier! |
It's kinda obvious that Citizen Seige has nothing really to do with OW, but are OWI planning on making any movies that are actually based on Oddworld with the kind of storyline we would expect?(i.e evil industrialists, skinny guy with no weapons, etc):fuzconf:
|
Yes, the Abe's Oddysee movie is in preproduction and concept art for it can be found on TOGG.
|
OMG. These pics are GREAT! And they're just the concept art! I honestly expected something less and different from Citizen Siege conceptual artwork but these were what I wanted them to be like. The whole Oddworld feel to it. I mean yeah! Even those soldiers in one of those pics has a Slig-like feeling to it! (Well okay....it should be obvious that CS has the "Oddworld feel" to it but still, it looks so great!)
|
Abe's Oddysee movie!!! Thanks Wings of Fire!!! I have something to look forward to!!!!!!:fuzgrin::fuzgrin::fuzgrin::fuzsmile:

Something I noticed in Citizen Seige concept
Hey, I think this is my first ever post, so sorry if this has been brought up before...
I was just looking through some concept art for Citizen Siege, when I noticed a face that looked familiar. http://oddworldlibrary.net/archives/...=CACS0001.jpg1 To left of that image, in the thumbnails, is a picture of a man. I think he looks very similar to Christian Bale (latest Batman movies, The Prestige etc). What do you think? Sorry if this is old... :/ |
I'm not quite sure. They might have Christian Bale in mind, or it may just be a coincidence, but it'll be a long time until we find out, due to the fact that Lorne is going to put every effort into this motion picture, and will take a very long time.
And welcome to the forums, herr. |
This is a pitch; a way to graphically represent the plot and features of the film. I imagine they use all sorts of images to help them along; many would be production designs but they could also use images from other places that would represent what they're trying to get across.
