"La Libreria Oddworldiana" - "The Oddworld Library"

I clicked on Xavier's signature's link and I have been redirected to "The Oddworld Library" but it was an Italian version! It contains the Encyclopedia too, but I can't view any character because I founf an error (404). So, is anyone working to complete the Italian version? And who is working for that? Who started that work and why?

AbesGenerationX 03-04-2008 04:50 AM

Me and Stranger90 are working to translate all the encyclopedia, with the permission of Max The Mug. ;)

Hehehe. Yes, an Italian‐language version of TOL is being constructed, with translations provided by Stranger90 and Edward Shan (as you’ll see if you look at the credits). The site will automatically be displayed in Italian for anyone whose Internet browser has Italian set as their primary language. As you’ve noticed, it’s a work in progress, and isn’t perfect yet. Because I’m still working on the English version of TOE, I’ve suggested to Stranger and Ed that they don’t yet translate a majority of the articles.

So far, the only Italian articles are the contents page and Citizen Siege. The other articles will appear in English providing you use the right URI (/toe/Monsaic_Lines will work for you, but /toe/Linee_di_Monsaic doesn’t—yet).

But will the characters explanations be translated?

Yes, but not the names, for example, Grubb remain Grubb, Fuzzles will change to "Sferoidi" because in Munch's Oddysee, they call fuzzle "sferoidi".

Awesome news, Max.

I know you've amassed a good grip on PHP, but if you need any help with those URIs or anything else, give me a shout, I'd be happy to help.

Alcar...

Thanks, Alcar. URIs are easy thanks to some almost magical Apache modules. It’s manipulating databases that freaks me out. :p

For completeness of information: Yes, I do plan to eventually have the site fully multilingual, and there will probably be a call for more translators in the future. But NOT YET! Implementing Italian is an experiment, and only when it’s paved the way for easier translation will I ask for other languages to be added.

O.K., I had some trouble back there when TOE’s Italian readers could not read any article for which there was no translation (e.g. since there is not yet an Italian translation of the Abe article, the English original was also unreadable). Could my Italian readers please check to see if all the articles are now working for them?

abe is now! 03-09-2008 10:44 AM

I checked it and I noticed that it's all untidy! I clicked on Ciclapre (Meep) and I found Meeches in English! And the other links redirected me in the English explanation. What's going on?

Wil 03-09-2008 10:53 AM

There has never been an article on Meeps in TOE. ‘Ciclapre’ is the translation of ‘Meeches’ I was provided with. You will mostly see English articles because the only Italian translations in TOE are of the contents page and the CS article.

Ciclapre are Meeps, in AO Abe says Meech and not Ciclapre. In MO Meeps are Ciclapre, trust me. I played it. And so is it complete?

AbesGenerationX 03-10-2008 05:58 AM

Yes, Ciclapre is Meep.

Wil 03-10-2008 06:58 AM

Right, so ‘Meeches’ is ‘Meech’?

abe is now! 03-10-2008 08:07 AM

Yes, it is. Abe says "Meech" with an English spelling but it's used for plural and for singular.
