WAT THE FUK [postbit change]

Why is the poster profile and stuff on top of posts now instead of beside? Is there a setting of mine been changed or something? Or a phpbb3esque thing implemented?

both frums I go on have now changed for the uglies

Nate 02-21-2008 11:37 PM

For some reason this resets itself occassionally for some members. It happened to me about a year back. Probably means Peter's been fiddling with himself things.

Just go back into your User CP and change the settings back to the way you like it.

Leto 02-22-2008 12:10 AM

Oh my God thank you.

close/delete now

I decided to make the default postbit horizontal rather than vertical.

This means that by default all new members, and existing members who did not specify that they wanted the vertical postbit will have to opt-in.

I'm afraid to say that eventually I will change everything over to the horizontal postbit. I can imagine the public outcry already, but tough-titties. It's a strain on template uniformity / upgrading, and it is the vBulletin default.

Not too mention it is vastly superior!

The horizontal design just plain sucks. I don’t want to have to scroll past a load of crap about locations and rep just to get from one message to the next. It’s stupid enough having to cope with the fixed‐width templates. I am Muger, hear me outcry.

Alcar 02-22-2008 02:47 AM

There is little difference as the white-space underneath the userinfo in the vertical postbit is utilised in the horiztonal postbit by the actual content of the post. Where a paragraph would occupy four or five lines in the vertical postbit, it may only occupy two or three in the horizontal postbit.

In longer posts this smart utilisation of white-space is especially noticeable. While in shorter posts, I've discovered that the difference is usually between 70-90px in height. But that could easily be combated with further limiting the height of signatures, which I still think are woefully tall.

Coup d'état. Now.

Why not utilise the two unused bands either side of the board?

Wil 02-22-2008 05:21 AM

The whitespace doesn't bother me. Neither does the vertical scrolling. It’s the crud being in between the content. If I were printing the page, I would indeed care about whitespace. Also, if you’re going to make horizontal postbits mandatory while keeping the fixed‐width design, it will still increase the amount of horizontal scrolling when one has a small browser window.

Alcar 02-22-2008 08:08 AM

You do realise about this, and this, for printing, do you not?

AlienMagi 02-22-2008 08:50 AM

If this tells you anything...
When I log out it changes but when I'm logged in, it is normal.

Mojo 02-22-2008 09:18 AM

Duh. That's called "Personalization".

I knew about the second one. But what’s your point?

Alcar 02-22-2008 04:03 PM

My point, is that if you want to print a thread, there are two proper methods of doing it.

If you insist on printing a page with all templates, them I can not accommodate you. vBulletin wan't programmed that way.

Salamander 02-22-2008 06:16 PM

I use horizontal anyway, so this affected me in absolutely no way. Hurry for irrelevant posts!

Wil 02-23-2008 03:47 AM

I don’t want to print a thread; I never have, and I don’t expect ever to.

I was referring to your argument in the above quote. If you don't want to print a thread, then why bring it up?

Alcar...

Wil 02-23-2008 04:08 AM

Your argument is that horizontal postbits reduce whitespace. My counter was that since I’m not printing threads out, this is not a concern of mine. Indeed, reducing whitespace is pretty meaningless argument when the fixed‐width layouts waste so much space anyway.

Alcar 02-23-2008 04:33 AM

Ah, so it is just an issue of change, familiarity, and aesthetics rather than functionality.

Members will just have to get used to the new format. Change can be good.

Seeing as Alcar himself seems to be confused about the distinction at times, can he please clarify which is Horizontal, which is Vertical and which it is he wants to make compulsory?

Secondarily, if he does go ahead and make one compulsory over the other, I propose a full mod-team strike so we can see how much spam will take place before he folds!

I was most probably drunk or hungover.

Horizontal = userinfo on top of content
Vertical = userinfo to the left of content

I've waited for this day for many years *cries* I can finally return the OWF staff to just two.

I'm up for this.

Fuzzle Guy 02-25-2008 08:46 AM

As long as we won't get banned for spamming when the mods get back.

Wil 02-25-2008 02:02 PM

Only Peter will be banned. Especially since randomized testing has now proven that averages of distances between posts and page lengths are both greater using horizontal postbits.

Splat 02-27-2008 01:03 PM

Horizontal is the way forward! Horizontal is the way backwards! Horizontal is the way everywhere else!

I would go on strike to campaign against a mod strike to campain against horizontalism. Horizontalism owns you silly verticle people!

Nate 02-28-2008 01:08 AM

We're not against the concept of Horizontalism. We are just pro-choice, not some sort of Nazi-esque sanctions against the honest Verticals.

Alcar 02-28-2008 01:34 AM

The Verticals are scum. I aim to make all blonde-haired-blue-eyed Horizontals the norm.

Sorry, but there's only one way to say this: HORIZONTAL SUX EGGS!
