I has a stupid question

I just have a stupid question that eats away at the back of my mind.

:

Rules In Full

Respect is a key issue here. We expect that every member will be considerate of other members’ feelings and opinions. Everyone has the right to express his or her opinion, as long as it isn't posted with malicious intent. Such things as offensive language, flaming, using vulgarities or posting sexually explicit material is deemed as a spiteful attack against the receiving member(s). You can discuss or challenge members' opinions, but do so respectfully and thoughtfully.

Well...Not much people seem to respect people, their feelings and stuff. There is flaming, but nothing is done about it unless it comes with a list of swearwords. People seem to flame but keep under the rader or whatever. Anyway, my question is: how bad do people have to insult people to get an infraction?

I know. A stupid question, but I wanted to ask it.

Hobo 01-08-2008 10:01 AM

Bad enough that even I'm offended.

There is no set level. We just do what we feel is appropriate

Zozo the Zrilufet 01-08-2008 10:22 AM

Mmkay, but I think a set level is needed.

abe is now! 01-08-2008 11:19 AM

I remember someone insulted me, saying that I am a dirty foreign.

Carnix 01-08-2008 12:09 PM

The strictness off all infractions depends on what the mod thinks. No set level for anything. Mods have divine power. End of.

Hobo 01-08-2008 10:34 PM

Carnix gets it.

And abe is now! stop making shit up.

Strike Witch 01-08-2008 10:37 PM

So, Fuckity Fuck Fuck in the air directed at no one is awesome, but "You're a fucking fuck-fucker" is bad?

Gotcha.

How do you suggest defining a level of offensiveness?

Laser 01-09-2008 07:05 AM

i think what Hobo said is a set enough level for me anyway

Weeellllllll I dunno really. Something that could stop the trolly mess, negative attitude and do more about the insults would be fun, but I might as well expect a giant naked armoured epic flying [color=pink]pink[/pink] kodo to smash through my window. I have no idea. I've seen three people leave so far due to the mudslingingness.

Hobo 01-09-2008 10:04 AM

All the cool users stay.

You would be a hypocrite to infract anyone.

Hobo 01-09-2008 12:37 PM

You're just jealous.

You're just jealous.

I used to have faith in you as a mod. Not any more.

Hobo 01-09-2008 12:53 PM

Oh no. You are breaking my heart.

Strike Witch 01-09-2008 02:06 PM

"......Mah Achy-Breaky Heart....."

Hobo 01-09-2008 11:16 PM

I just DON'T think you'd understand...

No, the populat trolls or people that love the place stay, the bored or bothered people leave.

What made a satirical attitude cool in the first place anyways?

QFT, Hobo likes insulting people, sooo...He can't infact people, because the bible says he has a plank in his eye, oh noes.

Aaaaanyway sorta on topic...There was a sticky saying to spell right and not use caps, but if people use lack of spellingness or all caps in a joking matter, the rule seems to be disregarded, it smells like double standards 8/.

Hobo 01-10-2008 07:57 AM

You don't use the internet much obviously

Anyway if you have a point that you're actually trying to make sum it up in one sentance. GO:

But I don't think I can, its hard :(. And I know the internet is a mean place but I dunno, I like non-meanness (Shrugs).

I guess the point I'd like to make is: I think the place should be stricter on the meanness, or at least do meanness less often. I dunno how to use the words to express myself 8O.

Hobo 01-10-2008 08:37 AM

Regarding your sig, the assumption that you're male comes from the fact that only men use the internets.

True story.

While I will admit I am lenient to members who have a similar posting style to me, the overlap of the moderation sections and the active administration staff make sure that anything one mod lets slip another will catch.

Our policy has always been one of letting the mods decide what crosses the line however as you cannot quantify meanness. Feel free to use the report post button though if you feel we're missing something.

All that’s made it popular is the large number of people here that are satirical. It’s something a lot of members have done at some point or another, just with varying consistency. Obviously you don’t have this mindset, but maybe it takes this mindset to be able to distinguish between comments that are more light‐hearted and intended to amuse from those that are actually liable to offend, whether purposefully or not.

If it’s done in a joking way, then it’s done self‐consciously for the humour of it. Poor language becomes a problem when people use it trying to express themselves sincerely. It can be hard to understand and tiresome to bother trying. If you don’t understand the intentional and joking use of seemingly poor language, then just accept it’s a joke you don’t get and move on, same with any other joke.

Zozo the Zrilufet 01-10-2008 08:40 AM

Eh, I kinda stopped reporting posts after a while because I got PMed by a mod not to. I think I overdid it, but still...I don't feel confident reporting something unless its riddled with swearwords, and most people are too smart to do that anyways.

Yay females, there are plently of females on the net, hence the porns.

Hobo 01-10-2008 08:42 AM

You know what i meant

Anyway i'm going to close this topic before Salamander comes back and tells me he doesn't love me anymore again

EDIT: Changed my mind. No I'm not.

mudling 01-10-2008 10:45 AM

Well, any use of discrimination should get someone infracted, wqhether it be about someone's gender, race, age, beliefs, history or condition, but people who go about calling people thing's like wusses or asses should just be ignored.
So basically, I think that there should be a set level, and that any form of discimination would be above the level.
Am I confusing anyone yet?

Hobo 01-10-2008 10:51 AM

You cannot quantify something like that and on what level someone will take it.

For an example:

I frequently use homophobic slurs or whatever to good friends but it isn't meant in the same way as if some northern youth with a shaved head is shouting it across the street at someone.

It is easy to see where the line should be drawn in an argument, and it is also easy to see when a line has been crossed. Unfortunately we have to do it on a case by case basis so we can't have set levels of this is allowed this isn't.

Does everyone follow?

This is certainly true. There have been times when I've infracted people that other mods have thought were fine. There has even been a time that I've reversed an infraction because another moderator objected. When it's a particularly thorny issue, we'll discuss it in EL or over MSN. Suffice to say that there is quite a lot of thought put into the fairness of the moderation.
