Abe film to star Abe!

Shocking new production paintings from the not‐to‐be‐released‐for‐a‐long‐time Oddworld feature film have revealed that Abe, the titular hero of Abe’s Oddysee and Abe’s Exoddus, as well as bit player in Munch’s Oddysee, will be returning to the Oddworld universe to repeat the events he’s already gone through. The two gorgeous pictures (one by Lorne Lanning, the other by Raymond Swanland) depict scenes that will already be familiar to fans of Oddworld 1·0.

The first painting (Lorne’s) shows Abe and a friend investigating cave art by torch light. This one has already been made my computer desktop background, it’s so rich in colour and scale. I don’t know who that is by Abe’s side, but since the wall features gazelles and five‐fingered paw prints, I don't think we need to worry about Munch growing a second leg just yet.

The second painting (Raymond’s) recycles the tense conclusion to Abe’s Oddysee, as Abe confronts Molluck and his sidekick, Toast, atop the local Mudokon Labor Union.

Wait- are you serious about that last part?

Also: what the frac is going on in the first one? I can only assume it is a concept to be delivered to the artists, who will then, if they are to depict the scene literally as opposed to inspiration, "Oddify" it. It certainly seems like it is supposed to be getting the feel of one of Abe's first encounters with his people's culture, history and inheritance.

As for the second one, that's very interesting, it looks a lot like Raymond's work from MO. Is the description official or your interpretation? To me it looks like a Glukkon, Gloktigi, some sort of tall slig-like thing and two robed chroniclers are walking along a bridge over the Union.

Wil 11-15-2007 11:53 AM

It’s all my interpretation. These things came with no description, selected from a couple of hundred to whet our appetites. I think they’re both done more to perfect the colours, angles, space, emotion, and other aspects of scenes and environments.

Bullet Magnet 11-15-2007 12:23 PM

You'd have thought that was Rupture Farms, but I think it's Nolybab. Granted, we haven't seen all of Rupture Farms, so who knows what they get up to in there, but the neon advertisements and logos are indicative of an urban environment, as opposed to industrial.

Like Coruscant from the beginning of Episode II, or the dock at Beaumonde from Serenity.

It is incredible! These images are fantastic! But I didn't understand what is in the first image that strange character. And will these images be included in the Oddworld 2.0? Anyway thank you, Max the Mug, I needed to see some new OWI's pics for be sure they will make an excellent job :D!!!!!

Paul 11-15-2007 01:51 PM

I like the city/factory style one the best, is that glukkons or somthing else looking down at the muds?

And will these images be included in the Oddworld 2.0?

What? They’re production paintings for the film, so yes, they’re for Oddworld 2·0, but won’t just be in the film as is.

Nate 11-15-2007 03:01 PM

Nice. Very nice.

*hugs all involved*

Wil 11-15-2007 03:24 PM

Have you still got that thing for Lorne?

Cullen Heath 11-15-2007 05:55 PM

Max, this is fantastic. Thank you.
How do you know that Abe is even included in that second one? I don't see him.
And the first one, maybe a future Quintology hero? Squeek? Nod?

Have you still got that thing for Lorne?

Of course I still have it. What do you think I'd lose something like that?

metroixer 11-15-2007 06:08 PM

I have thoughts in my mind saying Abe's buddy in the first picture is squeek.

As for the 2nd one, that too me does not look like rupture farms at all. Then again I haven't played AO for a long time.

Also: Molluck's slig assistant's name was toast? I never knew that, it's pretty cool! XD

Nate 11-15-2007 10:15 PM

I also thought that the 2nd pic doesn't look like RuptureFarms but then the previous photos with the mudokon's cells doesn't look like RF either. I think we'd best forget our previous assumptions about design.

moxco 11-15-2007 10:19 PM

Wow. Nice!

@ Nate: I think they're both from Nolybab.

Xavier 11-15-2007 10:41 PM

My advise, don't read too deep in Max's descriptions... and make your own opinions about those pictures

We don't know anything about the content of those pictures, so it's all up to your impretations

Jordan 11-15-2007 11:15 PM

These pictures are absolutely stunning. I can't get over how beautiful they are. Max, can we live in a big house please?

mudling 11-15-2007 11:38 PM

Wow, omg, these pictures are great!!
The first one appears to have a mix of aboriginie style hand prints, and cave men style pics, but I think maybe they're shown real worldly becuase they're inspirations, and to show where the rock art might be influenced from.
That being said, I guess you could get away with those gazelles being oddworldian, as long as the real ones look it.
The city one looks awesome, I too think it's Nolyblab, but I wonder what the dome thing could be? Maybe the whole place is a gaint floating Vyker's labs type thing, but I don't it.
Thanks so much OWI, and thanks heaps Max for delivering this to us. :D

Friendly Slig 11-16-2007 04:09 AM

Thinking about an Oddworld film makes me want to cry from happiness, I can't believe it... *wipes tears*
These artworks are so beautifull! and since Abe is in the pictures he made it more wonderful ♥

...Did anyone noticed something in the first picture? The paw prints, it has five fingers like humans
I don't know any creature in Oddworld has the same hands as humans but Outlaws, and they live far away from where Abe lives, so I don't think they are the ones meant with the hand prints
That's just my opinion, it may be just a random paw print :p what do you think?
The art of OWI is full of mystery...

Thank you Max for showing us these paintings!
Edit: Thanks to Xavier too =D

looney-bin 11-16-2007 04:46 AM

These are absolutly stunning. I hope nothing has changed too much though.

Nate 11-16-2007 05:08 AM

I suspect that the first picture is more for inspiration and is a mashup of photos from Planet Earth, which would explain the five fingered hands and the gazelles. Still stunning, though.

Wil 11-16-2007 05:22 AM

People keep thanking me, and it’s only fair to thank Xavier as well, if not more. He’s been very busy recently, but still had the nerve drive to get us these beautiful works to share. Applause needs to his way. :)

And I’ll re‐emphasize that the descriptions I posted are completely made up. There is no official description of these.

I don’t feel strongly that the cityscape is Nolybab. Nolybab is supposed to be the Oddworld Hollywood, and that doesn’t look like Hollywood to me. Not that I’d know what an Oddworld version of Hollywood would look like. Also, Abe’s journey is one from industrial outskirts to the heart of consumerism over the course of the Quintology. It would skip this somewhat if Abe got there in the first film. I’m guessing it show some kind of Mudokon quarter.

Also: Molluck's slig assistant's name was toast? I never knew that, it's pretty cool! XD

It’s not officially. It was thought for a while it was, based on one fan’s mishearing Molluck’s mumblings.

I’m certain they’re not to be taken literally. Mudokons will hopefully have either four or three (my personal preference) digits per hand.

Well, all right, but don’t expect me to keep it clean all on my own.

abe is now! 11-16-2007 07:47 AM

A quick answer about the second pic (I think someone can answer): we can see many strange Mudokons and some creatures upstairs that looks like a Gloktige. Is it possible?

Wil 11-16-2007 10:29 AM

There’s a Gloktigi and a Glukkon facing us, and some less clear characters facing away. The Mudokons in the foreground don’t look particularly strange to me.

They are squared: I like them :D!!!

Bullet Magnet 11-16-2007 11:51 AM

Those two shrouded figures look a bit like Ithorians. I interpretted them as Chroniclers- not necessarily the artist's intention, but they look like them the most.

Venks 11-16-2007 01:42 PM

This is so awesome! It makes me so sad that the Oddworld movie prolly won't come out till 2012 or 2013. Hopefully Citizen Siege/Wage Wars will tide me over until then.
The first pic is interesting I never expected to see normal looking creatures in Oddworld. I don't know what's with the five fingered hands, but I doubt they belong to the Mudokons. I was staring at that guy next to the Mudokon(I assume to be Abe) for ages. As if I stared at him long enough I could magically deduce who he/she/it was. My sister thinks the guy is a guide to show Abe around this cavern.

The second pic also cool, but the Mudokons closer to the store looked weird to me. *shrugs*
The Gloktigi is very, very cool though. :)
Is that really a Glukkon up there? I can't tell what that thing is it just looks like globity glook to me.

Zerox 11-16-2007 03:06 PM

The top pic: There's a Mudokon among the crowd, but the rest of the crowd is obviously not Mudokons. If they were Gluks, they'd have the ear things. There's no way these are the Khanzumerz or something? They do look quite pale and all, which would likely fit in with them. They're presumably some sort of as of yet unknown species.

OddYouko 11-16-2007 04:06 PM

Same here Friendly Slig! ;_;

Those pictures are awesome!

Hmm? The crowd all look like mudokons to me.

Nate 11-16-2007 05:23 PM

The focus of the picture is what's happening on the platform. It makes sense that Raymond would put most of his time making that look good and only outlining the characters in the foreground. They're mudokon-shaped but just simple sketches.

Cullen Heath 11-16-2007 05:30 PM

Yes, of course they are all Mudokons.
Does anyone know what that middle thing between the Glukkon and the Gloktigi, and the rest of the creatures are? Use your imagination.

Except for the one with the beard :p
