Oddworld 2·0
 

Lorne’s been chatting with Mark Androvich of GamesIndustry.biz about what’s going to happen with Oddworld in the future. Lorne calls it Oddworld 2.0, which makes me suspect all the more that the film (still in pre‐production) will be using a slightly altered version of the Oddworld universe to retell Abe’s story. He also mentions that one of the four projects that’re currently being worked on is a machinima TV series. He mentioned it before to the CGSociety, but the context here makes it sound more like it’ll be Oddworld rather than Citizen Siege. Then again, I guess it could easily be something altogether separate from either of them.

Thoughts? Ideas? Getting tired of the waiting? Still have faith that the end result will be fantastic? What do you all reckon?

I hope Lorne knows what he's doing. We don't exactly want a completely revamped Oddworld, we like it as it is, and don't want to be alienated by new things of various sorts.

I think that as Lorne created the Oddworld universe, he's not about to do anything to ruin it (at least I hope not).

Oddworld 2.0 sounds more like their action plan: their business model and the reintroduction of Oddworld to the public realm, than a restructured Oddworld universe.

Besides, we already know the story will be different, due to the alterations made so that AO would be a self-contained game and not a game of a film. We already anticipate the difference between Game-canon and Film-canon.

I doubt he'd totally revamp it, he mentioned he hadn't forgotten about Abe and Munch. Which means we could see more of them.
My thoughts are that it's going to be another look on the games, maybe remakes or films. Also, I believe he's gonna expand Oddworld past Mudos. I'm pretty excited actually.

Very true. It’s also been ten years since Abe’s Oddysee was released, about the same length of time between then and the time Lorne first started writing the stories that evolved into Oddworld. That’s plenty enough time to have developed the story in ways we can’t predict. It’s also possible for him to use ideas that weren’t developed until later in OWI’s history: characters and places we wouldn’t normally associate with Abe. What I’m positive will stay true is the art, emotion, humour, quirkiness, values and message that make Oddworld stand out from anything else out there.

That and key concepts like RuptureFarms and Molluck.

I believe that is the main reason it's called Oddworld 2.0 right there. However I envision Lorne remaking Abe's Oddysee into a movie and a game alongside it. It will still be the Abe we know in love, but parts of his story that their wasn't time for will be put in. I think this will only give us a greater view of Oddworld and the characters within it. What ever happens I have faith in Lorne Lanning. Ever since Stranger's Wrath I've learned to never doubt him. I think I've discussed how much SW touched me before so I won't repeat it here.
Anyways I can't wait till Citizen Siege which I know will be a fantastic movie.

I dunno, I still have my doubts about this thing. A "slighly altered Oddworld" does not sound pleasing to my ears. God forbid Lorne actually start caving in to the pressure in society stating that the bloodier and more coldhearted a videogame/movie is, the more awesome it is. I really don't know what to think about this, but I know that it's the old Oddworld that I fell in love with, and I'm not sure whether I'd be able to adapt to this new one. Also it's obvious that this "Oddworld 2.0" would get more attention from the public, so more and more people would kind of...forget the old version? I dunno, it's hard to explain. In other words, I'm looking forward to it, but in a skeptical way and solely out of curiosity...

I don't know what to say here. Seems like all we've learnt is a new soundbite, "Oddworld 2·0". I wish he'd give us some real content to discuss.


BTW, Max: How long did it take you to find the '·' character to use as a decimal point rather than using a normal period?

No length of time at all. On OddBlog and Forums posts I can just use the · HTML entity. For the thread title, I had to grab the middot that’s on my character palette, no different from inserting the typographic apostrophes, hyphens, ellipses, inverted commas and dashes that I regularly use. Any more off‐topic querries?

i think oddworld is only really oddworld with paramites, abe, gabbits, sligs etc.

I am speechless. Besides if I said anything I'd be copying Skillya. And probrably Alf's brother mate. But if there aren't any paramites, scrabs, or sligs in the Oddworld movie or TV series then there is a little someone called Oddey who is going to be really pissed off.

As much as I adore the old Oddworld and it's creatures, I can't help wondering, don't you guys want anything new?
I really want to see how Lorne and Sherry can expand it and add new continents.

Obviously we want something new, but we're worried about particularly major changes to already existing things.

The fictive odd world won't change, only OWI's business plan.

I am excited: I am impatient to know more informatios and... see the film!!!! Bu is there any trailer of it? Any anticipation, preview? Maybe the Name "Oddworld 2.0" a "symbolic" name for mean a new version of Oddworld with the old movies, revisited, restored with new special effects?

Now as for oddworld 2.0, if I said anything, I'd be repeating everyone else here. So I'll just leave saying that I hope it will still have its old oddworld charm, with old creatures and more =p.

You're gonna have a looooooooooong wait...they haven't even started production. CS isn't even out yet, seldom the movie to come after that.

What old movies? There haven't been any AO or AE movies except the AE one off.

Excuse me : for "movies" I meant the clips in the game, for example Abe's Moon in AO. I wanted to say I think the new Oddworld movie will include some of the old clips restored. And what is the movie at the end of AE?

Oh, I'm sorry. My mistake. In my opinion, the FMVs in AO and AE are beautiful enough and don't need to be tapped much.

I agree, I only said it because in a new film it could be "improved", if OWI want it. But I don't think they want to do it.

It’s not generally available for purchase or download. Odd VHS copies show up on eBay once every few years.

And is there anyone who have that movie in this forum?
