Forums? Hacked?
 

I read somewhere that OWF once got hacked. Can I have a bit more info?

I hacked the forums. I then randomly changed post counts. It was awesome.

More than likely it was this one weakness vBulletin at the time had then, and they exploited it. As far as I remember, they only changed the HTML of forumhome.

But that could have been another forum I visited.

Oh, that wasn't due to hacking - and it wasn't technically on these Oddworld Forums. When the first OWF were created, they existed on ezBoard under the guide of Sydney and eventually Abe Babe. When the OWF migrated to UBB, the ezBoard version was left behind as an archive - as at the time, there was no method of importing ezBoard data over to UBB. From UBB we moved to what we have now: vBulletin.

With the OWF-TGA Split, we all decided to get a little vengeful, and in the raucous the ezBoard OWF was deleted. So we didn't lose anything on this installation, but we did lose a piece of OWF's founding history.

But, really, I didn't know the OWF system went through so many changes.

The forums were hacked in 2005. As I recall the hacker did it for fun, but he/she mentioned something political, like hating George Bush. Some posts were lost, nothing important though.

Didn't mawk or one of his incarnations do something haxxor? I think I remember something like the mainpage being changed for a while. I remember searching the net for the name of the hacker, because it was plastered on the mainpage.

I believe we're refering to the same thing, the main page was changed, and as I recall you couldn't go anywhere from the main page. I'll try dig something substantial up. I don't think it was Mawk.

No one's account has ever been hacked into. Any illegitimate posts / content have been at the fault of the user usually due to leaving a computer whilst logged in or choosing a stupidly simple password.

No posts were lost during the 2005 hacking. The hacker (MrNsSaF), merely took advantage of a XSS vulnerability in the vBulletin code - which could have potentially allowed him to delete anything, but chose not too. I must say it was the nicest hacking I've ever experienced.

He threatened too, but nothing ever eventuated. vBulletin is fairly secure, to cause a problem with the OWF you'd need to look higher than just vulnerabilities in the software.

AlienMagi and Abe is now!, read the entire thread before you decide to post what we class as spam. And don't post an apology either, because that is also continuing on from the original spam.

If you had read the thread, you'd know that nothing has happened recently.
