Are infractions unfair?

I think yes, i got an infraction for saying gay, and SOMEONE said "stop talking about polotics you fat bastard," and "you islamaphobic right wing Jew!" How come he didn't get one?

mudling 08-28-2007 02:25 AM

I'm smart enough to get the general idea, but I'm gonna be innocnet and go with what are they?
but seriously, what are they?

Xavier 08-28-2007 02:35 AM

This shouldn't be in the Oddworld Discussion...

This thread is failure. Bring it before the mod who gave it to you and if they feel like it's debatable it will be discussed in the Employee Lounge by those who have access.

Or it'll be ignored.

Havoc 08-28-2007 02:55 PM

If a mod hates you you get an infraction. Make us love you and suck our penises...

Nemo 08-28-2007 03:47 PM

Wait, is it us who should be sucking your penis, or you?

Splat 08-28-2007 03:56 PM

Infractions are necessary to stop people flaming, spamming and generally making the forums even messier than they already are.
If you think you've been given one unfairly, talk it over with the mod who gave it to you.
Better yet, don't call people gay in the first place.

Facsimile 08-28-2007 04:26 PM

Dunno, what are they?

Mac Sirloin 08-28-2007 07:19 PM

What I got for using gifs for my sig that took up to much space.

Basically, If you get too many in a short time frame (About three weeks, I'd wager) then you get a banning of some sort, or lose some privileges.

Its really, really sad how much I know about this subject.

Thats what my little sidebar looks like, I wasn't aware until now that infraction numbers aren't on public display.

Because Nate's the one who hands them out.

I don't think that the idea of infractions is unfair but you can't stop a mod being bias so sometimes the way that infractions are given out can be unfair. You got an infraction for calling someone gay and I am infractionless after a series of multi posts, terrible spelling and grammar, and couple million times I've had to apologize to a mod. But then again, it seems to be in my nature to be overlooked. I hardly ever get punished but I get rewarded just as little. I guess it was just bed luck that you said the wrong thing at the wrong time... Either that or the mod who gave you the infraction hated you and was watching your every move to find a reason to infract you.

The above was not a plea for infraction

Nate 08-29-2007 02:11 AM

No, you haven't recieved an infraction because we keep on hoping you'll improve. Experience has told us that punishing someone with poor grammar tends to make them worse so we'll only give a member an infraction if we're sure that they're capable of doing better but post badly out of spite. That said, I'm reaching the limits of my patience with you Carnix so you'd better pull your act together and quickly.

Oh, and I haven't voted because I think this poll is ridiculous.

Havoc 08-29-2007 02:41 AM

In short; Infractions are handed out by moderators who are all qualified to do so. Moderators are hand picked and voted on by the rest of the staff. All moderators however can handle their power responsibly and won't ever abuse it. So if you recieved an infraction then it will always be for a reason. If you have an issue with an infraction you've recieved then take it up with the moderator in question and don't make posts about it.

Most infractions give you 5 warning points. You get a week long auto ban if you get 15 warning points. Do the math.

Jordan 08-29-2007 03:04 AM

It depends on what you do to get them. If you're really bad and spam up the forum and stuff, yeah, you deserve an infraction. But for saying a minor thing isn't really fair. But calling someone gay is no exception.

Carnix 08-29-2007 03:14 AM

The way you put that didn't make much sense. Were you trying to say that calling someone gay should get you and infraction or not?

Havoc 08-29-2007 03:18 AM

If the moderator thinks that it deserves an infraction then yes. And I personaly agree.

... Seriously not helping Peter.

I'm considering taking over these forums and kicking you out. Sydney has been offering advice on the best way to proceed*.

Who's with me?

*That said, I never know when it's really Sydney and when it's just Max in a dress...

Carnix 08-29-2007 05:58 AM

Not me, I'm with Alcar. Besides it should help, he's putting across the image of divine power stating that mods are superior so the rest should stop complaining. And at the same time he made me laugh.

Infractions are perfectly fair, I don't understand how you could see otherwise. Mods hand them out to those who deserve them, I know that I deserved mine.

Most ridiculous statement ever. EVER!

Venks 08-29-2007 05:35 PM

Hmm I may be getting a infraction myself soon. *Winks at OWF's sexiest Tiger*
Infractions can't be unfair. Only moderators who give them. Some moderators become, or already were, egotistical. Thus if you were to talk to them as an inferior or an equal you will find yourself with an infraction. Some might do it just for the sport of it. These moderators just enjoy holding power over the heads of others. Just hope that you don't run into one of these moderators and you get one who looks at a situation from multiple points of view.

Patrick Vykkers 08-29-2007 08:05 PM

On your first point; you surely can't infract someone for insulting THEMSELVES and for OFFERING others the ability to insult the maker; http://www.oddworldforums.net/showthread.php?t=15864

But I feel infractions are currently too long in length. 3 months? 1 month sounds much more reasonable to me.

EDIT: HOLY SHIT 1337th post FTW!

Hobo 08-30-2007 01:23 AM

1 month sounds about right, for minor shizzle.

Jordan 08-30-2007 02:08 AM

For what I've seen on these forums the past few months my infraction seems extremely minor compared to what some people have been putting.

Infractions are only unfair to those who believe they can say anything without worrying about the consequences.

Rex Tirano 08-31-2007 06:32 AM

Infractions are fair. If you get really upset over them then you need to get a life. It's only the internet and it lasts a month or so.

Life goes on.
